So now we have a higher operating budget with staff being laid off and still have an old middle school building that is empty and being heated that we don't know what to do with. I thought this whole consolidation thing was to save taxpayers money?
What about allowing public access to the topside of the pile from Sewall St. and having the bottom part off limits to the public? Wouldn't take much more than putting the posts and cables back up so no one can drive on the pile and dump a bucket or two of sand up there once in a while.
I'm reading this article and I'm having a hard time figuring out how the school district is saving money. There was a big rush to close the LF middle school because it was deemed out of code for "academics", but isn't being used for anything else. However, it is stated that we are "minimally heating the building to prevent deterioration". Doesn't that cost a bit of money to do with a building that old? And where are the savings going from only turning down the thermostats instead of just shutting them off? Directly into the fuel tanks of the busses hauling the kids further to Jay. They admit they have no exit plan for the middle school. So we just kick the can further down the road and spend a ton of money heating and maintaining a building we don't know what we are going to do with and now we want to have a second one empty with once again, NO EXIT PLAN. Not to mention it will cost, according to the article, $400,000 more to build an addition in Jay that has five less classrooms. I'm sure that figure does not include the cost of either demolishing or upkeep of either school building. As a taxpayer, this outrages me! This needs to be thought through a little better, before anything is implemented. I see closing another school building costing the taxpayers much more than they realize.
So basicly, both solutions involve the closing of the Livermore Falls buildings. Not sure, but the last time I checked 16 does not equal 21. I don't see how a 16 room addition is going to compensate for closing down 21 classrooms. Also, there is no plan for the Livermore Falls site when it is closed down. This was one of my questions when the whole consolidation thing started. I'm not interested in paying taxes to maintain TWO empty school buildings. I think the RSU needs to go back to the table and come up with something better. This whole consolidation thing has been nothing but a last minute duct-taped mess from day one.

It just gets better.

How exactly is the district saving money?

And the long term plan for the south campus is?
