As far as your simple math... of course that fine on paper... but when spending is 10 times revenue (tax policy), a 1-ford increase in revenue (tax increase) will not put a dent in the deficit if spending stays the same or increases (the Dem playbook M.O.) Additionally, raising taxes can and often does have negative implications to consumer spending which in-turn lowers revenue. The problem with raising taxes, is that the politicians who support it are the same ones who look at the increased revenue (short term) as a means to increase spending. (The Dem idea of "cutting spending" is to not increase spending next year)

I've been thinking about this, and I wonder if the timing coincides with some sort of DHHS review... was Mr. Mahamud recieving DHHS or Fed assistance? Does he now fall into the category of exceeding the lifetime limits? Does this even apply to him?
I wonder, because if infact he WAS recieving assistance, was a business owner, and/or was also exceeding other conditions allowing his continued residence here, it may explain why this is happening.
We just don't know at this time. Nobody questions the clear pleasantness of Mr. Mahamud. But we must ask what triggered the sudden "catch" of the system. The article fails to elaborate on this. Hopefully there is an explanation.

I've run into this gentleman
I've run into this gentleman several times around town. He is the most personable Somali I have ever encountered. Friendly, warm, courteous, and not afriad to say hello, thankyou, or talk about his kids with you with a genuine smile. And he'll make eye contact! A true gem.
However, since he is not a refugee he is at a disadvantage like many other "normal" immigrants and asylum seekers. The problem is not that asylum seekers are treated unfairly, but that refugees are given carte blanche and completely get around the system, while hardworking socially adept men like Mr. Mahamud get screwed by the system. I do believe Mr. Mahamud deserves to stay, but the system not easy.
I've known of many who have come to America and spent years trying to be approved... many dont make it through the gauntlet. Many do. The refugees, however, are allowed to stay forver without any chance of being "kicked out". It's really not right to kick out those like Mahamud, and let others who are so hell-bent on NOT becoming a part of our society stay.

The Congressional hearings were about religious freedom vs Govt mandated birth control coverage for a private university. The Dems had a College professor (UCC affiliation) scheduled to testify about the subject, then at the last minute dropped him and arranged for Fluke to testify. She had no experience in religious freedom issues, only feminist issues. The last minute change prevented the normal 72 hour vetting for those proposed to testify.
Moreover, Fluke is now shown to have ties to the Obama White House and has been working these avenues for years. She is NOT an "innocent Co-Ed" she is a 31 year old political operative who has been working the govt mandated birth control issue for years.

Do Catholics believe in Jesus Christ? By all means. But the fact of the matter is, an independent, privately owned non-denominational Christian School is NOT the same as an institutional Catholic prep school. This is a no brainer. They are two entirely different entities.
For (non-Catholic) Christian families who are struggling to pay bills, let alone tuition for their kids, St. Doms is not the best choice. Moreover, St. Doms is a High School. CMCA is Pre-K through 12.

While I understand some may think its tacky or in poor taste to recommend a great shoool for Christians, it is in service to those Christian families who are now faced with the task to finding another school for their kids. It's about keeping Christian Schools alive in L.A. I stand by my "advertisement" 100%.
FYI: Taxpayer funded charter schools get "free" advertisement, but Christian Schools do not. Public schools get millions and millions of $$ to waste on the latest gadget whiloe their buildings fall apart aroiund them. Christian schools do not. Tacky advertisement? No.

I'm saddened that Vineyard is closing. Christian Schools are often a very (surprisingly) affordable alternative to the Public School system and they teach the four basic subjects in addition to a solid Christian worldview.
Central Maine Christian Academy at 390 Main Street in Lewiston, is an excellent school and should be seriously considered by those parents and students who attended Vineyard. Don't let what happened to Vineyard happen to CMCA and keep Christian education alive here in L.A. (And by no means should St. Doms be confused with Christian schools. There is a huge difference.)

But even with no beer or wine ordered, the bill was $47.00 That's too much money for my comfort zone, and at a restaurant that ISNT expensive. I would venture to guess that most folks would agree... unless they were very well off.

Have you figured out that a Governor doesnt create jobs. Have you figured out that a Government doesn't create jobs. (unless you live in a totalitarian socialist State; which we dont) Moreover, a President and a Congress doesnt create jobs.
The only people who can create jobs are Businesses. I qualify this by stating that Govt jobs do not contribute to the bottom line of a capitalistic society. Therefore, the only jobs the govt can create are the ones that hurt our economy.

This goes for Maine and the Nation. The tax burden on Businesses in the US is at the top tier of all developed nations in the world. The competitive disadvantages that US businesses have in the global marketplace is insane. For US businesses to compete effectively today will require a) lower corporate taxes and b) a level playing field for imports and exports on-par with foreign competitors.
You want the Govt to create jobs? Good luck. You want to fix the problems that are preventing US companies from hiring and growing? ...Address the above (2) points.
If we are going to lower corporate taxes than the State budget MUST be rolled back at least 15 years. Thats not a fantastic pipe dream, but it sure gets those recieving State assistance all riled up.

Lower the Medicaid/DHHS/Welfare budgets and you will open up the windows for lower taxes across the board, which will then open the doors for businesses to hire, stay and/or come to Maine... that will get the unemployed employed again....
Other than that I'm really not sure how you expect to cut the budget. Where? Who? It's clear that in Maine Welfare is the Sacred Cow of budget items. It cannot continue to be so.

I havegrandparents, great grandparents, great uncles, great aunts, second cousins and other relatives buried in that cemetary. I am not angry at where this man cjose to take his own life. To be so protective of a public cemetary but so ambivalent and unconcerned about others taking their lives "somewhere else" is simply wrong.
The cemetary is FILLED with burials of thousands of individuals over the last 150 years. Im sure some of them did actually kill themselves. Perhaps in rather disturbing ways. Our loved ones went to their resting places in the cemetary long after many suicides where buried there, and im sure others will in the future.
The loss of an innocent life, be it by drunk driver, suicide, accident or cold blooded murder is a loss to a family almost every time. This man went out in a terrible fashion. Where he will spend eternity none of us know. But we do know that there are many buried in that cemetary who it could be said, were evil individuals. What about their story? Who are they? who knows. But they are most certainly buried their along with the truly blessed and sanctified.
All of this doesn't change anything for me in any way. Especially in a cemetary with so many "lives" interred. Every one of those lives has a legacy; some grand, small insignificant, some tragic, some uneventful... but all of them are no less significant than any other, be they young, or old.
May God bless this man and have mercy on his soul. May God also bring comfort to his family and loved one in this time of loss. May He be the light for their path and bring peace to their hearts and minds.

Businesses arnt hiring. When things turn around it should be better, but we have to get through this first. Having multiple skills that can be used at a single place of employment is why I am still employed (knock on wood)... my wife hasnt had a permanent job in many years... We struggle with all these things that many others stuggle with also.

Goodwill Industries will hire practically anyone with no experience, and they pay a reasonable wage for entry level retail work with easy hours. They train you and give you a working head start back into the workforce, be you male, female, young, old, even the disabled have found jobs there. Your excuse that there are no jobs for inexperienced Mainers is total bull.
Have you seen some of the kids (and adults) working at Burger King? They have job fairs nearly every month. They dont require any experience and pay pretty good for entry level work.

Now the meat and potatoes is the Schools and the TEACHERS. When I was in HS (back in the 80's) our Senior English teacher was as boring as a box of rocks. We had (1) girl who was an honor student (what she was doing in our class we had no idea)... she got an A always. The rest of us were sleeping. literally. At the end oif the year i'd say roughly 80% of the class was going to get an F. Flunk. Guess what. We all passed with a D. I didnt learn a damned thing in that class, and I failed almost every test. But hey, who cares, I passed the class and got my diploma.
Dont you dare blame NCLB for failing schools. NCLB shined a light on whats been getting bigger and bigger for the last 30 years: Crap teachers.

Youre half correct here. Public Schools are a reason private schools thrive. But the private schools in Maine are hurting right now. Not because of the curriculum or the performance (they outperform public education by miles) but because of the economy. St. Doms will accept almost anyone, probably even avowed athiests if they have the $$. This is sad.
I do know there are Christian Schools that are top-level adacemically that are not at all expensive, and the best part is that they still hold the students and parents to the mission statement of a true Christian School. That involves active parental involvement and family-centered Christ-centered living (notice not "God" as that can mean anything to anybody). But this is one reason when combined with the economy that they are hurting right now. The only upside is that the student to teacher ratio is extremely good. No public school can tough the Christian Academies in this area, and the tuition is surprisingly low.
Hebron Academy and St. Doms are just flat out expensive... too expensive for all but the financially cozy...

I have seen these types of "could care less" teachers with my daughter when she has had questions. Many teachers will not give a student one minute of their time outside of regular scheduled school time. These bad apples are becoming the orchard. Sure there are some great teachers, but they are now the exception, not the rule.

YORK, Maine — All registered Democrats are encouraged to participate in voting on Sunday, Feb. 26, the day of the Maine Democratic Caucus.
In the Town of York, the caucus will be held at 1 p.m. at the YORK MIDDLE SCHOOL, 84 Organug Road, York.
Town Clerk, Mary-Anne Szeniawski will be available at the caucus from noon to 1 p.m. to register anyone who is not registered, not enrolled in any other party and to register any new voter who will turn 18 by Election Day (Nov. 6). Independent (unenrolled) voters may register as Democratic voters at the caucus.
Those registered to vote in another party (Green or Republican), must change their party affiliation at York Town Hall by Feb. 6 to be eligible to vote in the Feb. 26 Democratic caucus. Occasionally, people change party affiliations during a significant election and forget to change back.
To register, proof of York residency will be required. Acceptable proof can include a valid Maine driver's license showing a York address, or two utility bills with your present York street address and a birth certificate or passport. Voters in doubt about their status or those unsure about their affiliation should contact Szeniawski at 363-1003. The clerk is available at Town Hall any week day during business hours.

In realty Dan, Snowe voted YES to allow ObamaCare to move out of committee and on to the Senate floor. Snowe was on that committee and could have voted NO. She voted YES. She was the only "Republican" on the committee to do so. It was because of Snowe's YES vote that ObamaCare got to the Senate floor at all. Snowe burnt a bridge she will never get back, no matter how hard she pretends to be conservative during the campaign cycle.
As far as Susan Collins, both she AND Snowe were two of only five Republicans to vote against defunding planned parenthood out of the ObamaCare system. In essence, they voted to retain ObamaCare as is.

I agree with everything you mention here about Private Messaging (PM) feature. You are exactly right, and thats the biggest benefit. So much we often would like to discuss but dont due to side-tracking topics and time issues. Oftentimes these comments can spur serious thought about issues (on either side of a debate) and these things can better be hashed out via PM. Makes for evn more honesty and saves alot of needless back-and-forth on some hot-button issues.
I'm very interested in the "new deal" that the REP and DEM factions say they have agreed upon regarding the DHHS budget. How great can it be? We'll see I suppose.

the whole "Occupy" concept is, in itself, against the laws of most munipalities. Since when is the "occupation" of public places ok? We are free to use these public places, but they are not campground, and they are not open to homsteaders who claim them for their own.
The tactics and goals of this group are so detached from American values (yes there IS such a thing) that they could only find a home in a bolshevik style uprising.
By all means, the "Occupy" kids have the right to walk around protesting whatever they are protesting (does anyone really know for sure?) but at the end of the day they need to pack it up and go home to mom's basement or the soup-kitchen, or the shelter of their dorm, or their car, of dumpster... wherever they came from (does anyone really know for sure?)

In addition to my comments below, it would be extremely useful to have a SJ private message feature where users could send private messages to other users. While this could potentially increase db size, it isnt anything a good webserver cant handle. Ive wanted to contact other members in private a number of times and such a feature is safe, secure and private while keeping user safety intact. We could choose to ignore users or other features that would prevent abuse.
I run a web community that has thousands of users world-wide (a forum-based community) and the PM feature is very manageable. The software I run is nearly 10 years old and still handles the tens-of-thousands of posts and thousands of private messages easily.

When Isael and Islam are stress and reactionary it heightens military sensitivities and taxes cultural tolerance / intolerance.
Israel is the only democracy in the middle east. Without the support of the US the entire region becomes a tinderbox. While I agree we dont "need" to support every aspect of Israel, we MUST make it clear that when the &*$# hits the fan we will side with Israel. If we do not make that stand we can count on that tinderbox igniting rapidly and without delay. Israel is a nuclear nation and by allmeans they *can* defend themselves. However, the US imparts the biggest influence on Iraeli foreign policy, and without our support they too could become a rogue nation that pays little attention to the wishes of impartial neighbors.
Ron Paul's ideas in this area seem sound on paper, much like most of his positions, but in the real world stage we are faced with, his ideas could easily become a recipe for disaster.

While I find a few of Dr. Paul's positions to be shallow and short-sighted (Israel, among others) I will say he is the most logical candidate on either side of the political spectrum.
Up until Herman Cain was pushed out of the race, I would not have supported Ron Paul. However, the ousting of Cain has left a huge foul stench in the minds of many GOP voters.
Ron Paul is a viable candidate for POTUS at a time when the Dems and Repubs are equally too squishy and far too self-absorbed to do whats right for the United States.

(see that little "agree (1)"? thats me) but the reality is this girl (far from a woman, in any way whatsoever) was allowed alot of freedom that she wasnt ready for. Regardless of her age, she was incapable of making correct choices. Such a mistake(s) will stay with her for the rest of her life. Only God can gove her the ultimate forgiveness and cleanse her from her sins. As fellow sinners, each and every one of us is JUST as guilty as she is. That doesnt mean we go around killing people, but that we need to understand that this girl will pay the price dearly. One way or another. You are right in your assessment, but wrong in your wrath.

If the EL coaches would actually play more of the bench they'd have a better chance. There are some extremely capable players that are warming the EL/Leavitt bench while the girls on the ice get worn out, worn down and run out of steam.
Stop playing favorites. Yes, EL is playing a couple extremely talented players through entire games, but many of those getting ice time are only doing so because theyre 2nd year players, not because theyre exceptional players. Rotate the bench and keep the team fresh.

That, in a nutshell, is the single most powerful way (and perhaps the ONLY way) this pattern can ever be curtailed. Making laws will do nothing, as teenagers are and have always been invincible, irrespobsible, and too clever for their own good. We were, they are, and the ones down the road will be too.
As parents we need to verify the trust we offer our kids in small doses, and require that they prove themselves trustworthy before giving them the keys. The poor choices we ALL made as teenagers does not mean we need to trust our kids to "get away with" the same ridiculously stupid crap we got away with. It's not hypocrisy on our part, its wisdom. Shame on our own parents if they allowed us to get away with it. As parents it is our duty, our respobsibility and our JOB to insure our kids stay alive into adulthood, and learn that thier deeply desired freedom comes with a price and a responsibility beyond the capability of most any typical teenager.

Most teenagers do not (cannot) comprehend how mortal they are... (and many adults are also incapable of this), but primarily the young are more likely to lack the comprehension regarding fate, responsibility and carelessness. The mangled wreck would serve as a stark reminder that the seemingly trivial choices we make can have catastrophic results; changing lives forever.

(Sims, Sings, Mac's Variety, Steckinos, Steer House, Happy Jacks, etc, etc etc) Today we're limited to a handful of locally owned establishments and a bunch of awful chain restaurants... (Applebee's is the worst, 99 isnt much better... TGIF and Ruby Tuesdays are marginal, and Longhorn is over-the-top corporate...) what we have left are 2 or three GREAT local restaurants and the rest a gaggle of fast-food joints...

Ive watched restauarnt after restaurant FAIL in this spot for over 5 years. The problems are always the same: Poor signage, blacked-out windows, and lack of a clear understanding of what the restaurant is all about and who it is targeted towards.

I drink Lewiston water when I have to, and Im not worried about it when consumed on occaision, (its "ok") but if given the choice of a bottled spring water source I will choose the spring water any day.

As far as "education will be the number one priority" this talk is no different than ANY previous mayor, and as a parent of an ELHS student I can attest that throwing money at students and schools does zero for eduation. School expenditures have gone up up up and up, student enrollment is stagnant, and grades are falling. Laptops for every kid has done nothing but institute school-wide goofing off on Skype and FB all day everyday at ELHS. The IT dept wont disable the social sites because its "too hard" and so the kids continue to skype and fb away all day. Great ideas.. NOT.
Lets see Labonte actually leave the the school budget alone and institute accountability and responsibility to the Auburn School Dept. The two things that will improve our schools.

The "rich" and small businesses dont enjoy this charade. They have some breaks, and some credits, but on the whole their effective tax rates are way more than the average citizen.
The more we pay the lazy, poor, and or working class in tax credits beyond their contributions, the higher taxes will be for businesses. And thats one reaosn businesses leave the state or nation. Giving the businesses a tax break in this economy only makes sense if you eliminate the tax hand outs given to those who dont pay in to the system, and cut off the refund amounts when they exceed contributions. I know at least three families (including my own) who get back thousands of dollars MORE than they have paid in from the iRS and state every year because of EIC and children.
Tax break for the 'rich'? Heck ya, and while youre at it cut the rates for businesses in Maine while kicking the rates UP for the lower earners and middle class.

(Have done it also and all was well until next delivery)... but most people (women, children, elderly, etc) are not as intimate with their boilers as we are. I came home one evening a few years ago and my 13 y.o. daughter was watching tv in a 53F. house like nothing was wrong. (I never got a call!) I had the house back up to temp in a couple hours, but if I wasnt around it would have become a real emergency later that evening.

That is just one way (indirect as it is) that Bob Macdonald can change things. The council will be shifting even more conservative in the next election cycle (watch and see) and at that point things will begin to move for Lewiston. People are Fed up. This pattern is happening across Maine, not just here in Lewiston. So, Macdonald has the ability to lead, the ability to project influence and to (hopefully) articulate what the voters told them they want.
Bob does need to work on the articulating, but I have spoke with him in persona a number of times and I know he is fully capable of meeting that challenge.

Well, Claire, I too was here 40 years ago. Unemployment was lower, there were an abundance of factory jobs for workers of all levels, taxes were lower, welfare was less a way of life and more of a last resort safety net. Lisbon Street was a bustling commercial center for the entire central Maine region. While crime was still a fact of life, it was much safer to walk around the tree streets after dark than now. Drug dealing was nowhere near as common as today. Community pride was much stronger, cultures were every bit as varied, but those who came to Lewiston did so to work and to become Americans.
Lewiston welcomed those who wished to assimilate to OUR culture and become Americans through-and-through.
Yes, its true that many mistakes were made 40 years ago, but that doesnt mean we must keep repeating those SAME mistakes (which we are doing to this day. Making the same mistakes over and over does not justify them. Oh, to be where we were 40 years ago. Think of the opportunities. Go backwards? that would be a great opportunity.
So what can we do today? Continue with the same mistakes? Or maybe we really SHOULD take a different approach, finally, and tackle the issues that our elected officials have been IGNORING for decades.

As far as backward sliding goes, I would much prefer Lewiston slide back about 40 years than "progress forward one more day in the direction we have been "progressing". It would be a grand continuation of wasted time, energy and resources.
The Dec 13 election has been transformed now due to the unfortunate and trgic loss of Mr. Paradis. To this end, for many, this will be a vote based on emotions, for others it will be a vote to "do over", and for the rest a vote for true change (Macdonald).
Sure, Bob cant change everything, he cant actually change much *himself*, but he can begin to build a new direction for the city's appraoch to the many issues that have NOT been getting better over the last 10-15 years. That in itself is why many will continue to support Bob and cast their vote for him on Tuesday. Will Macdonald win? Hard to say. At this point I think it could go either way, by a little or a lot. While I am not a Lewiston resident, I am the parent of an ELHS student, and regardless, i will comment regardless. I have liven in Auburn on and off for the last 40 years. I have seen the changes and the ever expanding school budget for a population that is NOT expanding. (1% is hardly growth)
We are all free to comment on anything we wish. Both towns have good ideas and DUMB ideas. I'd expect honest commentary from ALL L-A residents!

Mean spirited?? David, did you even READ my post? Shallow? Think about what I wrote. This race is extremely close by many estimates. In a race such as this, many people are on the fence. And whats more, this is politics. Anything can be expected. Do I think Mr. Paradis released this diagnosis at this late date for a political reason? I have no idea. I cannot say he did. There is no proof that he did, nor is there any evidence to say he didnt. In the end however, it might sway a voter.
My point was first and foremost to give Mr. Paradis my heartfelt prayers and best wishes with regards to his diagnosis. At the same time I pointed out the hypocrisy of (a) his statement that he didnt want to take centerr ste with regrds to his press confernce, and (b) he did just that (three SJ front page SJ articles with Paradis picture in just two days)
The problem I have with this is that the ISSUES have now been lost. Both Padis and Macdonalds messages a now seemingly unimportant in the Sun Journal. It is what it is. It didnt have to be done "on purpose" on the part of Paradis, but as far as news goes its all about Mr. Paradis now.
He deserves our prayer and I (again) wish him and his family and loved ones only the best of health, happiness and joy, today and long into the future.

I did read all your other posts (almost as many as mine i might add) and yes you did say you agreed with Macdonald, etc. But there are only TWO choices for mayor. You MUST pick the better of the two, because thats all there is. We can debate perfection forever, but it isnt going to change THIS mayoral race. We MUST choose either Macdonald or Paradis. Even if we vote holding our noses. Get behind a candidate and VOTE. And try to get others to vote for the candidate you feel will help initiate CHANGE.

Remember, the mayor cannot change policy or laws, but he can propose ideas (various measn to do so, both directly and indirectly. While they may only be ideas, the council can, and often will move to act on an idea, or propose some vote on an issue as such. While the mayor is less powerful than a councilor, he is tasked with leading them, both in direction and focus. I believe a mayor (even in a weak mayor system) should be MUCH more than a wal-mart greeter.
You must decide. Macdonald or Paradis. Keep it private or make it public, but not voting is the worst thing you could do. You cant vote for both, and if you choose to NOT vote, you should not be a part of this discussion. I'm thinking your gonna vote!

Macdonald has made no promises that he cannot keep. He has stated what he plans to do as Mayor, which is lead with an agenda. He can lead, and his agenda is clear. He will tell anyone who asks what his agenda is. (Unlike Paradis).
Having an agenda is not the same as "making promises". An agenda is a plan. He has a plan on which direction he wants to lead the council (of which Macdonald already has considerable support). But he (and Paradis) both attest to the fact that the Mayor cannot make the decisions regarding which way the city actually moves. The council does that, along with the manager.

True, its not that simple. But the reality is, that "that welfare" is infact a major contributing factor to the problems facing downtown Lewiston, and revenue vs expenses.
It's about money. Welfare does not bring economic vitality. Welfare can only help when it helps those who actually NEED help. Sometimes that means a hand up, sometimes that means permanent help (for those who are disabled).. but when welfare means a way of life for those who are able bodied, then "those people" (who are EXACTLY who Macdonald was referring to) are a blight and dead weight to the system.
Is it that simple? In alot of ways, yes, it is.
Symantics is no defense for the truth. It's easy to rip someone apart because they "didnt pick the right words".. but the real problems lay right beneath the surface. Enough with the symantics attacks. Macdonald is right on this one. He addressing ONE segment of welfacre recipients. He knows it, I know it, and his detractors know it.
Macdonald isnt afraid to speak the truth, the facts are only lost on those who choose to pick a word game in order to avoid the truth. Paradis, on the other hand is a consummate politician, who picks only the finest time-honed words or safe eloquence. It was noteworthy during the debate, that when Paradis was asked direct questions regarding his positions in his years in the council, he was silent. His "safe way out" word processor was working overtime.
When the answers did come they were wordy, boring, "safe", static, and most notably, meaningless. That is not the way to address problems facing Lewiston. That is the way to maintain status quo.

Claire, you are 100% correct in that the mayor, be he Paradis, or Macdonald has no control over DHHS and MSHA policy. This is a state-level issue for sure. However, the mayor (and council, more-so) have alot of power to make things happen or make things stop happening here in Lewiston. If it isnt by laws, it can be by influence.
With all that, inaction attributable to "saving face" and maintaining a 'non-embarrasing image' equates to absolute uselessness. We dont need a mayor who does nothing but "look good" and say only the things deemed "media acceptable" by the over-sensitives among us.
It's long past time to get things changing in Lewiston. Paradis is nothing more than status quo. He has no goal. he has stated NO plan to change Lewiston anymore than Mayor Gilbert. Anyone can shake hands and smile alot. Something Mayor Gilbert prides himself on. But Lewiston needs more than a wal-mart greeter for mayor.
Macdonald is ready to shake things up. And thats precisely what Lewiston DOES need.

Tony, It will be interesting to say the least. However, your sentiments and prediction was shared by many (including myself) prior to the regular election a few weeks ago.
I'm a Macdonald supporter. I've spoken with him a number of times on the phone in the last 2 months. All I can say is... We'll see. It's gonna be something, whether Paradis takes it by a mile, or just squeeks by, or if, infact, the predictions were off once again, and Macdonald pulls the biggest upset in years.
We'll see.

I returned to Maine to work. I am not college educated, but after securing a job in Bangor, I packed up all my belongings and moved across the country on my own. I then found a job in Portland and this allowed me to move to Lewiston, from which i commuted to Old Port for over a year before once again finding a job here in Lewiston. Thats 3 jobs in 2 years all to get myself where i wanted to be. I have a family and found work in Lewiston. I am not rich. I have alot of debt (too much) and I pay taxes. I own my home, yet i bought atthe peak of the market, like many did, and am "stuck" for the time being. I work, work work. I have a day job and TWO side jobs and have incorporated to handle these side jobs. Not only do i pay normal taxes, i pay business taxes and PICA SS etc for my small business. All this and a 40 hr a week day job.
Why do I do all this? Itd be much simpler to quit everything and let the state pay. Why not? If youre so angry, (also) thats fine, but I can tell you first hand, that if you were in my shoes and saw the absolute freeloading going on in L-A you'd be much angrier.
Be angry, by all means, but direct it not at Macdonald, but at those who keep building the welfare machine bigger and bigger at the ever-increasing expense of those, like myself, who work their butts off every day of the week just to get by.
Macdonald is stating what needs to be stated. It isnt pretty. It isnt eloquent. and quite frankly, its the ugly truth we all have to deal with.
If you have a disability that prevents you from working, then by all means you deserve the helping hand. I, and Bob Macdonald have zero issue with such situations.
On top of all this, I assume you are a US citizen. We ned to help YOU first. Immigrants second, "visitors" third, and displaced refugees? well... they are special in that they are neither immigrants, visitors, or students. The doors opened wide in 1996 for refugees. They do not fall under the auspices of existing immigration law. It literally *IS* get off the bus and get an apartment, food, car, etc. No other group of "people" in the US have it this easy.
