Flyovers will shatter quality of life

My brother lives in a current flyover area, and I've experienced them. If this is approved you can count on big, black jets appearing without notice at little more than treetop level, and if that isn't enough to scare the bejeebers out of you, then the noise will certainly ruin your day. You will be left with a fight-or-flight response in high gear... which, by the way, is bad for your physical health (just type "stress" in your search bar to get the facts). When the sonic booms come, and they will, local authorities will complain to the military and will receive denials, no satisfaction, no information, no cessation to them, either. Occasionally there may be a "training mishap" and a deadly crash. Once they have a foot in the door they will do as they please and there will be no way to stop them. If this is what you want when you're sitting on the lake fishing, or enjoying your camp this summer, or cooking out in your yard, you really don't know what's in store. Support our Senators and stop the flyovers now, while you can.

My Point Was...

It was exactly my point that the story had nothing to do with immigrants or their driving ability, and it saddens me that some folks have used it as a forum for their anti-immigrant opinions and blatant misinformation. Immigrants are subjected to the same laws as the rest of us, and if they drive nice cars it's because they earned them and saved for them, the same as anyone else.

Did I miss something?

Did I miss something? I don't think I heard that the driver that caused the accident was an immigrant. It bothers me that responses to driver errors in this accident have become a platform for stereotyping of immigrants and their driving abilities. There are many, many unsafe drivers on the road, and I think we should focus on what people do, not who they are or where they've come from.

No passing on Ash Street

It's a shame Ms. Proulx felt pressured into moving aside for the other car, since there is just one driving lane on that section of Ash St. now, and no passing. Too bad the offender got away.

In the spirit of the season

Can't have it both ways, Heather. The Somali community is criticized when it doesn't adapt, or "blend in," to the dominant culture, but when it does it is faulted for taking away from others. While there are many people who celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, it is also true that the occasion has become a secular, cultural celebration. All kinds of folks get together with family and give gifts, and I can't imagine a parent alive who wants their child to go without. None of the charitable programs that provide gifts for those in need check people at the door to make sure they are Christians or otherwise "qualify" for gifts, nor should they. As people share in cultural traditions it brings them together, even as each group preserves its own beliefs and practices at holiday time. Let's celebrate the season with open hearts and minds.
