I attended the University of Maine, where I dual-majored in French and new media. I grew up in Philadelphia and Bangor. I got married to the love of my life last year. My husband Tony is also a journalist — he works in our Norway bureau as a reporter. We both met working at our college newspaper, The Maine Campus. We live in Lewiston, and we have two pugs named Scoop and Georgia. I recently really got into running and I blog about it sometimes. In my spare time I like to take long walks, listen to NPR podcasts, crochet cute animals, travel to new places and speculate about the future of newspapers.

I've taken my time to respond to your comment because it was very thoughtful and well-presented, and I wanted to reply in the same way.

First, I'm very sorry to see you go. You've been among our core group of commenters. But you knew that, because I've said as much to you privately already.

Second, you raise all valid and very true points. When we all are anonymous (or choose to be anonymous), it does in some ways level the playing field because the high school dropout can debate with the college professor. And there are people, who brought a lot of informed and intelligent information to the debate that will not be able to participate in the conversation because of things like their occupation, or their employer, or their home life, or whatever.

I completely empathize and understand where those people are coming from. And in the history of the Internet until very, very recently, an expectation of anonymity was the norm. Like that New Yorker cartoon:

I remember when Facebook announced that they were going to link profiles with other schools. There was outrage! What an invasion of privacy. Then when they were going to allow anyone get on Facebook, regardless of whether or not that had an .edu account. Everyone was upset. To put your name and your face and where you lived on the Internet for anyone to find you was crazy.

But that thinking has changed. And in a relatively short time, too. And I think most people would agree, for the better. Better than the days when all you saw on Facebook were the people you went to school with, and that's it. Sharing information with your friends and family, or reconnecting with lost friends has never been easier.

We decided that we wanted our community to be more like the open town hall and less like the anonymous message boards. We recognize that not everyone can and will stand up in the town hall. But for the people that do, they will know to whom they are speaking and maybe treat them more like another human being and less like a soulless, faceless name on the Internet.

Will it work? Will we ever go back? We don't know the answer to those questions.

But what I do know, and what this lesson of calling hundreds of people has taught me, is that we are a community of real people, with real families and lives, and I hope that this process has demonstrated that we as a business are willing to put the resources into making this online community work.

That wasn't really the intent, to come across like we're selling the endorsement so hard ...

We had Gov. King in here for an editorial board meeting on another topic and we wanted him to weigh in on our new policy, since his concerns about sharing his editorial with us was part of what sparked the movement here to verify our online users.

For what it's worth I've really not heard many negative things, other than what people have written here in the comments (which yes, I do try to read most of them!). And I've heard so many positive things. It's been really, really cool to call all of our users and talk to them and put a voice to their names, so to speak. :)

Well, yes, that is all very true.

But I want to point out that this policy didn't come without careful thought. I posted a query and a poll a month or so ago when we started talking about making these changes at the Sun Journal, and the majority of the people who responded to that poll said yes, we want to do away with anonymous commenting.

We've said it before and I'll say it again: This is a forum for you, our community members. We did this because we want civil discourse. We want the people to reclaim the comment boards and feel comfortable and safe participating in the discussions here. If it doesn't work and everyone leaves, then the experiment didn't work and we'll try something else. But the community wanted us to do something.

If you work certain hours, we can call you in the morning or late at night -- we have staff to accommodate that. Just send me an email (preaves@sunjournal.com) and I'll pass on the info.

If you're saying that you can't comment with your real name because you're ethically bound from expressing viewpoints on certain topics because of the nature of your job — I empathize. I'm a journalist, after all. But that is a sacrifice that I have chosen to make for my profession. And while we regret that perhaps some interesting and relevant dialog from the community may be lost because these people cannot make comments anonymously, that's a sacrifice that we and the community have chosen to make in order to gain some civility in the comments section.

And I say the community because I posed the question to the community several weeks ago and 57 percent of the respondents said they would prefer users comment with their real names instead of pseudonyms.

I'm sharing this memory from Suzanne (Tanguay) Reaves, my mother-in-law, at her request. Sue is Irene's niece.

My earliest memory of Aunt Irene is when I was very young, and she lived home with memére and her older sisters. When we'd go visit, I'd gravitate to her room here they had a record player and played 45s. We wou'd dance and dance to what ever the pop music as back then, late 50s - early 60s. I thought she was the coolest aunt.

Hey citygirl,

We're looking at a couple different things to change the way that we handle comments, like making people use their first names, or instituting a two-strikes policy. Until recently I was reluctant to ban habitual offenders because its hard to keep them from reregistering with another pseudonym. But several people have made compelling arguments to me to revise that policy.

Anyway, the survey closes a week from Tuesday, and I'll make another post with the results. You can review them now at the link I posted above.

The Eid celebrations were on the website on in the early afternoon of Friday, Sept. 10, the day before Sept. 11. Later in the afternoon, a Sept. 11 memorial story led the website and the Eid video was secondary.

Same thing for the subsequent day, Sept. 11.

If I may, this is a copy of a letter that regional editor Scott Thistle wrote in reply to another reader who questioned our balance of Ramadan coverage and Sept. 11 memorial coverage:

Dear Mr. Begin,

Our (Sun Journal) coverage on Saturday Sept. 11, included an A-1 cover story on the Sept. 11 anniversary and a listing of local Sept. 11 memorial events that were planned in our area. I would dare say this was our lead story -- front and center with two prominent photos -- This ran above the fold, with a feature photo from Cleveland.

We did not have any local Sept. 11 events on Friday Sept. 10 -- or we would have used a local photo for that story. It's hard to cover Sept. 11 memorial events BEFORE they occur. We did the next best thing and told readers about the events, when and where they would be held.

It is true, our local section front page B-1 - not on the cover -- included a feature photo of an 11-year-old girl celebrating Eid with her family in Lewiston -- you can clearly see her face, which was the dominate photo on B1 of our Maine section. Also on our Saturday religion page we had a story about Muslims, 9 million of them, the world over marking the end of Ramadan. This was page B5 with a Cairo dateline.

There was no story on the Eid celebration locally -- only the two photos in print. The secondary shot was of folks praying -- it was shot from the balcony of the Lewiston Armory but is not of the "backsides" of anybody pointed toward our readers. You continue to repeat this but I have not seen any photos from our staff that represent that statement -- even with a big stretch of your imagination.

We very intentionally put the Sept. 11 story -- on the ninth anniversary "out front" as we say in the business -- and the listing of local ceremonies there too, so people could attend one if they wanted to. We pushed local Eid coverage to the local section, also intentionally, out of the anticipated anger over us covering that at all.

On Saturday we had three reporters and two photographers cover memorial services for Sept. 11 in three different towns. Lewiston-Auburn, Livermore and Norway -- really four towns.

This coverage was prominent on our Maine section with a lot of space devoted to photos from these events and two stories. We also had an A-1 story on Sunday from the wire on Sept. 11 -- "Nation marks 9/11 in sorrow". It ran in the lead spot -- the top left side of the page. Above it was a very prominent "teaser" a star-spangled 911 with the sub-head "Remembering" and a listing to the local coverage -- of local events and people. We also had a history feature on military plane crashes in Maine on our Sunday cover.This was a planned feature that was not-necessarily Sept. 11-related but far from Muslim-centric in the nature of the report.

Finally, On Sunday we also covered the Blue Mass, with photos and a story, for public safety workers who have died in the line of duty and that story ran on B1 today (Monday), with a very large photo of the Catholic bishop shaking hands with Lewiston's Fire Chief. That event - the Blue Mass -- was also promoted on Saturday with a lead story on B-1, beside, but above, the photo of the child at the Eid celebration. This is the second Catholic mass we have covered with a story and photos in two weeks and the second prominent photo of Bishop Malone in our paper in two weeks. Does that feel like we are ignoring our Catholic readers to you?

We (the editorial staff) discussed the issue of the Sept. 11 anniversary coinciding with Eid and decided to intentionally downplayed the Eid celebration in deference to our readers' sensitivities. We all felt the Sept. 11 anniversary needed and should be the lead story for the weekend pages... and it was.

Our mission statement is: "We publish the Sun Journal to inform, challenge and reflect the communities we serve." To meet that we cannot and will not simply ignore an entire sector of our population. We won't pick and choose which religious groups we cover and don't cover. If you notice we also had a very lengthy "FaceTime" in our B-plus Section with the Rev. Doug Taylor ... I'm sure that offended some people as well.

But just to recap over the weekend starting with Sept. 11 through today. We had 8 stories related to Sept. 11 and the Blue Mass for police, fire and rescue workers. We had 11 photos and one video that were related to Sept. 11 events.

So 8 stories, 11 photos, 1 video for Sept. 11. 20 items produced by five different staff people.

For Eid we had: two photos and one online video -- shot by a single photographer and one wire story on Ramadan ending on page B-5.

That's 20 items to 4 items.

The ninth anniversary of Sept. 11 was given 5 times the coverage we gave to local Eid celebration coverage.

Really Richard, I think you are barking way up the wrong tree on this one and are being wholly unfair in your consideration of the Sun Journal's efforts to duly mark Sept. 11 over the weekend.

If nothing esle you should apologize to our hard-working staff the five reporters and photographers who actually got up and went to the Sept. 11 memorial services -- trust me they were honored to do -- instead of just bitching about the fact that we also covered the Eid celebration -- which, by the way, actually invovlved quite literally thousands of people in our city. Should we have ignored that?

The facts are: we devoted 7 times the print space and five times the staff resources to Sept. 11 than we did to our coverage of Eid locally.

Those are the simple facts Richard. You can't deny them. We didn't play Eid over Sept. 11 -- not by a long shot -- if you actually took the time to count up the stories, photos and also carefully onsidered the placement of those stories and photos on the page, I think you will see our coverage was leaning very heavily towards Sept. 11 memorial.

The Sun Journal had staff at three of the local Sept. 11 Memorial Services and also at the Blue Mass on Sunday --- which did you attend? Nobody saw you at any of them.

I recognize that it might appear that I don't warn Dan as often as I warn you or other people. Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to sit and read every comment that is left on our website. I wish I did, because it's a part of my job that I really enjoy and that I think staff moderation and participation is very important to success a community news organization, but I don't have the time or the ability to do it all.

That being said, most of the moderation that I do get to do is reading the comments that are reported to me via the "report inappropriate comment" link. That may be why it appears that I do not warn Dan as often, because he is very good at sending to me inappropriate comments that have been directed at him.

The bottom line, though, is that you two are sniping at each other at every chance you get. I understand there is some sort of familial disagreement between you two. And I am sorry to hear that. But you have to get along with him, or at least [not] respond to him, because those are the rules that we have in order to participate on our site.

You can follow the links in the story to read all the details about the trial. I just wrote up a few sentences here because, per our sharing agreement, we do not re-print other paper's stories on our Web site.

And that is absolutely not true that we "gave a whole section to Somalians [sic]". We wrote five stories about the changing face of Lisbon Street, stories which explored the street's past and future -- a future which very much includes the African immigrants in our community.

In 2009, there were 24. In the past year, there were 12 stores which opened on that area of Lisbon Street, the only point in time in the past 5 decades that the number of stores on the street has increased.
