I like green.

A Christmas without snow id fine for me. If it has to do anything, let it rain. You don't have to shovel rain.

Great Hockey Game

It was a very well played and entertaining game, but it was very disappointing that the crowd was so small. For an area where hockey is so much a part of winter life, the Colisee should have been packed. It would be great to have a team here with that quality of hockey.

If you missed last night's game, check out the next on on November 17th.

Let's get out and support professional hockey in the L/A area.

Impact Fees

Just curious, does the town of Poland have Impact Fees on new construction? These are fees required to be added to new construction, to go toward increasing expanding services needed by the new construction.

Glad

I am so glad that we won't have to listen, anymore, to the owners whining about leaving. Maybe we can now get a team here, that wants to be here.

Great Place and Great Food

Been going there since I was a kid, when I had to walk to it. Great people and great food. If you have never been there, your are missing a part of history.

Get rid of this outdated law.

Today we need to get rid of this outdated law, and put the emphasis on recycling, like most other states do. Here are a few reasons why.

1. It is very unhealthy to have all these dirty bottles and cans hanging around at stores where food is stored. It draws bugs and smells. This I have heard from store owners. The same health hazard goes for home storage of these cans and bottles. This is evident when you ever walk into some of these recycle stores and see how bad they smell.

2. The state is loosing money, as people from neighboring states bringing bottles purchased in neighboring states, into Maine to cash them in. Many times I have seen articles in this paper about this issue.

3. In a time of money conservation, not having to administrate this program would save money.

More emphasis is needed on home trash pickup and recycling.

Public Safety

Auburn officials also needs to look at the many cities that have tried Public Safety and had it fail.

As a retired employee of a failed Public Safety system, I suggest they look at both sides of the coin. The creation of public safety, in the city I worked for, really brought down the quality of service to the citizens. A person is a police officer because he wants to be a police officer and a person becomes a firefighter because he wants to be a firefighter. Forcing a then to do both will not work. The two departments turned into stepping stones for new recruits of the police and fire academy. They would go there to work for a year, then with a little experience and a entry on their resume, leave for a traditional department. Then more money was needed to train their replacement.

In the case of our city, because of the incorporation of Public Safety, we lost a lot of key members of both the PD and FD, who left to go to work for other cities. Moral in both the police and fire departments was at an all time low. The city spent lots money on equipment and training. As a result of people leaving for other departments manpower shortages were created and the overtime costs were sky high.

After about 3 years they realized it just wasn't working and the quality of service of both departments had deteriorated. The city commission abandon the idea, fired the city manager that came up with the Public Safety idea, and returned to the two department system.

Shortly after abandoning Public Safety, the Fire Department moral increased to the point where it won the nation wide award, as the Department of the Year, by a Popular Fire/EMS magazine.

My point being, look at both the departments that failed, as well as the ones that it works in, before money is spent on a system that has failed time after time.

Why should the tax payers foot the bill?

With me it is not a "Scrooge" issue. I love the lights and don't mind putting up with the traffic to view them. My concern is the city counsel doesn't mind using tax payers money to pay for these services, but has to try to cut corners buy looking into going to a Public Safety system, instead of the tradition Police and Fire departments. If Public Safety fails, like it has in many places, it will cost millions to find that out.
If I run an event and need police to direct traffic, I have to pay for it. Why should this be any different.
In most places if you need police you pay for it, why should Auburn be different?

Great Job By All Involved

This was no doubt the best event I have ever attended at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. It was at the PAL Hop where my wife and I met 43 years ago. To see these same bands appear after all these years was brought back a lot of memories.

Thanks to all the bands, the producers and sponsors.

Do it again.

Low Life

I wonder which rock this low life came out from under, to steal this ladies money.

The management and staff at Oak Park are very caring and concerned people, but security cameras should be installed at all entrances of this complex, to video people going in and out of the complex.

More Important Places to Spend Money

The trails are nice and a good place for recreation, but before money is spent on new projects the existing problems should be corrected.

If money is going to be spent for roadway/walkway projects, lets fix the existing streets that are long over due for repair. Pine Street and Ash Street, just two of them that come to mind, and there are many others.

Reducing School Costs

Cutting school costs is such a very important thing to do in this tough economy. With all the tiny school systems in the state of Maine, I would think it would be beneficial for counties to get all the towns within them together to establish county wide school systems. Consolidating and combining services would reduce the operational costs.

Safety Issue????

I find it very humorous, when watching a TV story about the noise law, the other day. This guy was saying how loud bikes help people hear them coming and are a good thing for SAFETY. After stating his two cents he drives off helmet-less, onto a busy road. If he has such a concern for safety, where is his helmet. It would make his bike riding more safe than noise will. In accidents involving bikers, hundreds of helmet-less bikers are killed every year, that may have been only injured, had they been wearing helmets.

The loud noise is less relevant today, as an argument, than it was years ago. Today most people drive with cars closed up with AC units going and and radios, CD or MP3 players blasting, and they would never hear a loud bike. The only people that will hear the bikes are residents outside of their homes that are just just trying to enjoy some quiet time.

Great Job Done by all involved

Our family attended the Liberty Festival and really enjoyed the entertainment and fireworks. Compliments go to the event organizers and all that worked to put this on. The only issue we saw was the lack of beverages, all we could find to drink was water. If more food and beverages were made available, it could help cover the cost of the event. A cold beer would have tasted good.

Good idea

Around here there needs to be a lot more restrictions, or enforcement of current restrictions, on dogs, or maybe I should say owners, around here. As mentioned above, stupid owners are 90% of the issue. Like a child, if the dog is never properly trained, you can't blame him for his actions. Several times we seen people at Thorncraig with their dogs not on a leash. One time a leash-less dog was scaring young children and the dog owners laughing because the kids were scared of the dog.

I see people walking their dogs around the neighborhood and letting their dogs crap on neighbors lawn, then they just continue along their way, leaving it there. People, clean up after your pets. Things like this make it though for those of us who are considerate and clean up after our pets, when restrictions against animals are put into place.

I guess a dog is only going to be as smart as his owner. As much as I hate to say it, this ban is needed.

Another Backwards Step

I can't believe they voted to get rid of key city workers, that are involved with public safety. In a city that has so many old out dated buildings, that possess the possibility of major fires, they cut positions in the Fire Department. Poulin's comment of, "But my commitment is to the taxpayers and the voters", makes me question his thoughts. If his commitment is to the taxpayers and voters, why is he putting their safety at risk by voting to eliminating public safety positions?

In a time like this we do need to save where ever we can, but risking public safety should not be one of those places. Maybe looking into cutbacks in non essential services could be an answer or even better getting with surrounding cities and doing a little combining of services to cut back costs and reducing duplication of services. This has been done in other areas of the county with success, and savings to the tax payers.

We are looking into buying a home in this area, but after this move it won't be in Lewiston.

I think in todays tough

I think in todays tough economic times this is a good move. Maine, being mostly rural, needs to do a lot more consolidation of services. One major area where we could save money is in our school systems. There should be one school system, per county. Running a small local school system for a handful of students is just not cost effective.

Another area where costs could be saved is in fire/rescue services. If county departments were set up, a lot of duplication of services could be avoided, a cost reduction.

But the biggest oposition to all this is who's system are we going to use. Each city/town in the county wants their current system and personnel to run the county wide department.

Anyway, good move Bethel, I hope more will follow your move.

While he is at it, he should

While he is at it, he should do something about some code enforcement, in Lewiston. There are so many houses with junk piled up around them, in need of lawns being cut or a clean coat of paint. This looks much worse than a piece of paper laying on the side of the street, and also brings property values of the neighborhood down.
