Compliments to the fire dept and their rescue squad. Things like this want our support more and more and believe me they deserve it.
Well done, thanks for saving another friend of man.
that we have so many students that don't fit in to the school program during the day. I wonder how many of those who are in the in school suspension programs are minorities frustrated by our language or way of life? Could Supt. Webster provide the sun journal with that kind of data for publication. I would find it interesting to know.
Let's hope that the new bill becomes law and as part of it there is a retroactive clause that goes back at least 5 yrs from the date it passes and becomes law.
It is obscene to see that this guy can collect that much money while he is in jail. At the least, his pension should be deminished by the cost of his incarceration per year... and at the maximum the whole pension should be forfeit, but we don't want him to get out of jail and become another welfare case, so perhaps we ought to leave him a percentage that becomes active when he gets out so he can have something to live on besides the welfare system.
The philosophy is nice, but do they realize what amount of time it takes to develop this plan? Then what about the realization on maintance of the plan? Is this going to be done by the teacher? When will teachers really teach? Take 25 students and create plans for each one. Sounds great, but the time involved, and time to adjust each must happen..what daily, weekly, monthly? Should one teacher be doing it or should it be evaluated and done by all the teachers at the same grade level? A lot of questions to be answered before beginning this process. Even Auburn with the computers (IPads) will have difficulty with individual plans. Subliminal learners ...aren't we all as we sit in front of the computer screens or tvs?
Not at all,if you chose that accept all the refuges and their families and their relatives and they keep having more and more children. Why should Lewiston be surprised about needing more classroom space, having to move seniors out of their comfort zone spaces, adding classrooms and bonding for large projects that the state won't fund.
Examine a map and you will see that where the expansions are like McMahon have a large immigrant population in public supported housing.
Driving the local population out of once all white areas in other areas. Catholic Charities of Maine brought these refugees here and dumped them on the city of Lewiston. That church ought to pay for their education costs, etc, oh I forgot that they probably haven't any money after all the sexual crimes committed by their priest and then having to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in settlements for each one.
It is an interesting contrast Pedophiles and Refugee support. Then the burden falls on the city. No one in Lewiston asked for all these people and did anyone ever look at the long term impact? I doubt it, they probably just said save these poor people... Damn they weren't even Christians. Shouldn't the Catholic Church save those people first?
I think that they did better on Winter St this last storm, as it seems to me that they went up and then came back down and then entered into Pettingill Park... I hope this will continue and I hope that we were one of those tweeks.
Germany prior to the second world war, such patients were euthanized because they were such a drain on the state economy. Personally, I believe that if I were in a similar situation I would want to be put out of my misery and yes I know there are religious and moral issues, but carrying this forward and look at the cost and if the cost were zero then the idea is sound, practically, probably not however, a solution needs to be found and this is one way to do it.
are publically funded wings of the community. Each community seems to think that it and it alone has the best students, best physical plant, etc.
What is really needed is a customized learning situation for EACH student. Do we find what they're interested in from Kindergarten and assist them in learning what is needed? Do we realize that choices and changes are made as one gets older? The age of computers and electronic gadgets will allow us to do away with physical plants, teacher unions, and hire only a few select teachers/instructors who will man the keyboards 24/7 to assist with programs, questions, etc.
Without Large physical plants to maintain, the savings could be enormous, without teacher unions demanding more and more raises for the employees, health insurance for the many teachers again more savings.
You may ask where will all this savings go? Well, it is NOT going back to help with you taxes. It will help fund new and better technology for the students. We will always need a few employees to administer or repair any tech program, but the fewer the better.
Diplomas will become meaningless. What you can do on your own or show a potential employer is all that will be necessary. State laws and national laws regarding education will be obsolete. Programs that furnish money or demand that local systems follow a planned curricula like "No Child Left Behind" are foolish and overburden the existing staff.
Can you see it? Schools without buildings, schools with minimal number of teachers/instructors. Day or night students learn anyway don't they. What is missing? Well, I believe that the "Hands On" programs like electrical, plumbing, etc. referred to as the "Trades" can be conceptually taught, but must have a practicum or field experience of many hours to finalize course work.
Oh, think of the money we can save without school administrators. Only 2 or 3 will be needed for the whole electronic network... wow, I am pleased.
Finally, we must realize that not all students want to learn or care to have learning pushed at them. There will always be a percentage of people who would rather do something else...drop outs should be allowed from grade 6 forward through grade 12... you can't save everyone and we have to realize it. It is like saying that there is a GOD. Well, we can't make everyone believe that there is or that there is only one religion either.
Bet this will stur up some feathers just about everywhere.
As usual our Governor takes a business attitude in that HE controls all things and everything must bend to HIS will. He is a poor politician because he does NOT know the state law and constitution. He overstates or creates conversations that he would have liked to have had with the slant that he would want during that converstation.
This guy is like a kid who hasn't read the driver's manual. He takes off and opens the throttle up full blast. He forgets that there is a brake.
The brake is the Maine Constitution and Laws of the State. The Legislature may be a majority of his Republican Party, but they are NOT fools. They know that if they want to get re-elected and do right by the people of Maine then they too must be accountable for their actions.
Giving the Governor what he wants is like the "full throttle" and they know that they have to put a brake on him and his overstatements and "Big Mouth".
Business attitudes are fine, despotic attitudes are not a way to run a government unless you want to go back to the time of the 1930's in Germany and Italy and we all know where those attitudes got the world. NEVER LET ONE MAN HAVE TOO MUCH POWER!
Remember that the debt to hospitals, and it got bigger and bigger.
People lost their medically related jobs because of the enormous debt.
We can not tolerate people losing jobs because of state reimbusements are too low or to late.
Support you local hospitals wherever you are in the state, the job cut could be yours. Services cut could be the ones you need. Defend your right to have good medical care.
Maine can attract businesses and people by showing that it care about and for its population.
Eyes open folks.
Like I said yesterday, lure Hanniford from Auburn just across the river to Lewiston and I know they already have one in Lewiston, but it is at the other end of the city. If you decide against that then consider putting in a Large Drug store complex. There had been talk of one on Center St. in Auburn, but the space, parking, etc has seem to have fallen through on that issue, so for the Citizens of L/A let's have one or the other. Personally I prefer a grocery store, and I am sure that if the city gives enough incentives Hannafords will move from Spring Street where the building is old, small and parking is terrible. Please conside these options city council members. We have enough parks in Lewiston and we need businesses that employ or pay taxes or both.
For years schools have talked about individualized learning, well maybe it is here via technology, but other skills like gym, playing together, etc. cannot be individualized... we have to learn to accept the diversity of others, oh God, I sound liberal..
These changes sound like a good direction to move in, but student led parent teacher conferences in the elementary schools, I doubt it will work well, with older HS kids this sounds like a fine idea.
Letting student move through education based on proficiency-based learning could end conventional grade-grouping. Not a bad idea if the student displays enough emotional maturity to handle the social interactions. Ex. A 6th grader working at an 11th grade level, but missing the social interaction of any peers would be harmful or at least cause minor disfunctions especially where things like gym or the team sports are concerned. Should we be considering doing away with all sports because there will be no one to play these games? I hope not as life skill and social skills go hand in hand with this kind of interaction... Academics, yes, but the rest needs more thought and work. No one wants to bore any student, but repetition is good. Remember your multiplication tables practice. Yes, you can do it on a computer too.
Remove the building and offer tax insentives to a company like Hannaford's ... especially seeing that the present location they have in Auburn has poor parking, the lot is always overcrowded and the store itself could be made into a new Super Store by Hannaford's. Keep in mind that there are a lot of bus riders who go to Auburn to the present store and you can see that if a new store were in Lewiston that there would be more foot traffic on Lisbon St., Canal and Lincoln St. To generate business you have to be a risk taker and taking down the mill building and getting a large chain store in there would be ideal for the LOT and the lot of Lewiston taxpayers.
Best of Luck
bet he did not espouse that value around election time did he?
Should never tell seniors to go to H..L as they have too many relatives in the area. Sounds like a good plan for the city, but
should the k of c hall be considered for other city needs? In time there probably will be a need for something on that street.
Every year, I complain about the Park getting plowed before the upper end of Winter St. I can explain that when the plow turns the cornor to plow up toward the end of winter st, it breaks off and goes down into the park, then returns later in the day to do above the entrance to the park.
My problem is if there are no activities scheduled for the park or hockey rink because of the weather, then why should they have priority over TAXPAYERS. Please plow from 132 Winter St to the end and then back down into the park before anything else. It is important to us that we get the services that we pay for... huh... regardless of the priority listings.
THere has ALWAYS been resistance to sharing anything with Lewiston and Lewiston feels the same way, yet this is really STUPID as there are things that could and need to be combined. To "H..L" with individual city identies. What is needed is financial savings for both cities. Yet each wants to control what they have done for years. A larger city council for a beginning could help run both cities, one city manager and one asst. manager for the cities combined. Local Fire, Police, Public Works, and Education could be combined, and yes I know that based on local contract that could be difficult, however it can and should be done.
Pouring Money into EL when what is needed is an expanded LHS academic and technology/cooking/trades programs there could offer a lot to local students.
JUST WHEN are we going to give up the idea that being independent enties is a GOOD idea? Sure the IPAD idea seems to work in Auburn. Would it have passed in a combined L/A, that may be doubtful, however, MOVING FORWARD is the thing to do, not stagnate and fear the future.
Probably won't see this in my life time, but things do change. Remember when the French community didn't socialize with the Irish community even though both were Catholic communities? Progress is slow as that took about 75 yrs to integrate didn't it. The Somali community may face more years than that for full integration as they are quite different from French/Irish Catholics.
I vote to combine ALL possible departments in both cities, the chances, well, I guess that I have a better chance at winning the lottery. LOL
I believe that if no one receives half of the popular vote in any election, then the two highest candidates should have a run off and the one who achieves a total of 50% or higher should be declared the winner. Although this process might cost more, it assures that in the end the people of Maine get a Governor who is wanted by the majority and not a process like the City of Portland had where second third forth, fifth etc choices determined the outcome. Perhaps that could work with smaller communities, but not the whole state of Maine. Will our Governor push for such a change? I doubt that will happen as he was elected one way and would not favor a method in which he might not get elected too. The state constitution woul have to be change, but as the Republicans hold a majority in both houses and the Governor ship as well NOW IS THE TIME TO PROVE THAT THEY WANT AND CAN BE A POSITIVE FORCE FOR THE STATE'S FUTURE ELECTIONS... I hope that they all read this and take notice.
are only vulnerable in this state do to the fact that the supposed head of the state party in Paul LePage... there could not be a worse image for any Republican to hold up and say "I follow his lead", instead they should follow Sen. Snowe's lead because she and Sen. Collins represent a more middle of the road and moderate group within their party. Thank God there are still a few sane voices in the Senate. LePage had better start running now, I personally hope it is out of the state... tee he. Even his own party would not go along with his extremist measures against the elderly in Maine. Thank you Republicans for realizing just how foolish his actions can be.
It might be more interesting to change the City Charter and give the Mayor a VOTE so that he/she can be more responsive to the people and follow through on what he/she would like to see done. It might be a good thing. Regarding the Mayor vs. the City Manager, if you check the background of these people you will find that the Manager is better trained in the overview of all depts and collecting data, then reporting his finding to the council for their approval. The two jobs really are different and should not be combined ever.
This has to be less stressful than cardiac care, and personally I think you probably find it more rewarding. Good Luck to you and your pets..may you find all those lost souls looking for their owners.
Yes, Alice there are good people out there despite the bad ones. There are many more good ones, but not all are in a place to give as the economy is so tight. If you can afford it, please continue to help this couple out with donations. I plan to do so.
I guess this means that the project envisioned for the casino near the parking garage is partially dead as it had included a hotel. Didn't these folks want to build a hotel near the falls on the other side of the bridge before?
A 5 set of stackable barrister bookcase(s)which would also be in a dark color if possible, yes we know that there are some out there for $750 and up, but we are looking for something in the $400 range or maybe a bit more. If anyone reads this article and has one to sell that you think I would like please respond here and I will try to get your contact info from either bag lady or shopping siren. Thanks.
If you email baglady, then she will let me know who has what and at what price, or at least I hope so... happy holiday shopping to all.
I hope you all have looked for and found the article in which this college student tells of her first hand experiences at Wal Mart and how people paid for items with welfare and food stamps ... this is a viral You Tube and should be fairly easy to find if you look for it. Viral means wide spread but not a virus containing item.
Please read this and forward it to all the state legislative branches and members before they make any cuts in the welfare program as well as the Director of DHHS and
The Governor of Maine. Thank you and let’s not let all those drastic cuts happen.
but it seems to me that the timing and the comment about "His dream for many years was to serve as mayor of the city. He had big plans for the city and was loved and respected by thousands of Lewiston citizens." remain too political with the run off election tomorrow Tuesday. I can only wonder if the SJ allowed this to run because they supported Lewiston Democrats in general.
I remain saddened by the loss of anyone during the holiday season as each year during this time the family will recall his passing. I again offer my condolences to the family.
I wish to close by stating that I rarely comment on obits, so you must understand that I am at a loss due to the timing of News Conferences, etc.
the death of the democratic candidate was quite a surprise yesterday. However, what it does is drive one more nail into the coffin of the Republican candidate Mr. Macdonald. First the election is held in and area that is totally unsupportive to his views and many of those will walk into Longley to vote against him, but this now adds a sympathy vote to the election which is very difficult to overcome.
The only good thing that may come out of this election if the Democratic candidate wins and the seat is declared vacant is that the polls throught the city will be open in the next election and not one isolated polling place. We would then see the true feelings of the city voters.
Our condolences to Mark Paradis' family is sincere though especially this time of year.
Best of Luck to Mr. Macdonald in his effort as he certain has a steep hill to climb now, and we can only hope that he will run again if the need arises as elections need a clear and varied choice for candidates.
Democrats vs Republicans... same old song.
Fear the Republicans as they represent change
Hate the Democrats as they give away everything.
Mr. Handy's comment represents the narrow point of view that unless you are born here ... you are from away...
I agree with Mr. Macdonald, but if he is to win over the establishment of Democrats they need to get the voters out to the poles. The more the turnout, the better the city will know what people really want, but as I indicated yesterday having the polling place in only one spot limits senior citizen involvement and the chosen spot is in the heart of the kind of district that Mr. Macdonald wants to eliminate. This is hardly a fair election process as it is presently set up. I believe that all polling places in the city should be open so that more people can easily and quickly vote.
You can see by the comments how much the Democrats fear a Republican in the Mayor's Office.
The ONE poling place in the city of Lewiston seems to be in the heart of the district containing those people that the Republican candidate most wants to put pressure on to move or have landlords be more responsible.
I sincerely doubt that Mr. Macdonald will do well as this area is generally populated by liberals and those on welfare.
One place for the whole city to vote is very limiting and requires that those who support Mr. Macdonald drive to this spot and vote.
I know it costs more to maintain the additional number of polling places, but I believe that the vote would be much closer and certainly represent a fairer balance of the Lewiston population than going to the heart of liberalism. I just don't see how the Republican candidate can win with the voting place stacked against him. At least the turnout at the debate was worthy and let's hope that that translates into people getting out there and voting. Please vote citizens of Lewiston. The city needs a large turn out to show that it believes in the process of voting for a candidate regardless whom it may be.
I live in Auburn so I can't vote for you, but you have my emotional support after all the years of legal discussions we had at McMahon School in Lewiston. Best of Luck
Doesn't anyone read this paper? Those of us who comment feel that our opinion should weigh as much as those who attend meetings and howl against or for a project.
I believe that we need a large campus, yes most students in Auburn already are bused so that is no big deal... Keep EL for the moment, but look into options. I even proposed the other day that we buy and convert the Bates Mill #5 to a new EL and at least we would have space, but limited outside activity space. Busing is again an option.
WOuldn't it be nice to get rid of busing. Neighborhood schools would be nice but too expensive to maintain and we would still have to have buses to transport student athletes to other schools for activities.
Sue Martin, always seems to have an opinion about education as a former principal and educator, but it is those administrators who got us into this mess originally so I discount her opinion.
Fix EL, plan to move to a large campus and leave room to build a new EL on that site too. As a tax payer I want this option.
Education began to fall apart when we identified Special Needs groups, such as physical handicapped, mentally handicapped, etc. The fact that society does require inclusion of these students is an issue that creates havoc in a regular classroom. Many years ago, Lewiston had a great policy for special ed student with emotional problems. They had to work their way into the regular classroom slowly and with the help of teacher aids, etc. If they slipped, back they went until they could learn to modify their behavior appropriately.
Chris Blake is my son, and he and I often disagree on things as we do now. He has had no practical experience as an educator and should temper his comments with the lack of that knowledge. He speaks from a point of one who has never had a problem learning and I doubt that he ever had learning issues. He is a good person, but very intellectual and not a realist.
We cannot segrate students by needs or lack of needs. Know the law.
I would like to see ALL comments offered here under add a comment.
I think it would be fun and informative to know what local people think. Hope you will do it. Thanks
Certainly a NEW HS is needed and spending money to renovate the old one is like pouring it down the drain, but if it is only a stop gap measure then perhaps it is worth while in the short term.
Building new schools is expensive. Will the community approve? If the economy does not turn around, I doubt it. However, I believe that bringing this issue up each year would be a good idea until it receives final approval.
The middle school now has a couple of trailers outside. These need to be removed and when the new spaces for the 6th graders are built, I hope that they will disappear. Also I feel that it is important to overbuild spaces as they fill up faster than the community plans. Having an extra 3-4 classrooms is essential for that expansion.
Good idea for a Mega campus. Being sure to allow spacing for wider roads, places for snow removal, Large Cafeterias are wonderful, but need to be separate from the areas for gym and in most cases wouldn't it be cheaper to build an area large enough for two or even three gym classes to be held at the same time for students and then later in the day converted to two large basketball courts for male and female varsity students or various activities on each side of a large partion.
Spaces outside for the elementary student k-2 and 3-5 each require their own separate playground equipment. This seems like an aweful expensive addition and as students are usually good at entertaining themselves should perhaps be the last construction issue. However,
a positive and thoughtful MASTER PLAN for this campus with all the wishes for space and expansion needs to be presented to the public.
I hope that the Sun Journal would present several maps and pictures that show these plans and designs.
Can we plan on state money for help... doubtful as there are certainly more needy schools throughout the state. Cost and borrowing are the issues for bonding. Let's consider that option.
either full or part time. BS/M.ed/M.ed worked 33 yrs for last employer. Need a job that I can sit most of the day. Can do management or run a reception desk, phone work, within local area of L/A most hours available to work. Computer skills, taught basic computer, worked with difficult youth, high desire, but will not work for minimum wage. Send contact reply to this posting. Thank you.
Well, we are always talking about a new school for this or that. Auburn is also looking into a new high school. Could the City of Lewiston sell the building at a cheap price to Auburn and could Auburn then use this space (renovated) for everything it needs in a new school excpt perhaps a large gymnasium or perhaps it could do a gym if you opened up the ceiling of the second floor. Heating and cooling are always an issue, but the size and availability of the property is too good to pass up. Question, "Does the Auburn HS have to be located in Auburn?" Plenty of parking and space for buses to move around, sadly there is "little" open space so students would have to be transported to somewhere to do football, baseball, soccer, etc. However, we could tear down a few more properties further down Lincoln St and build fields there. I do not joke at this idea. Considering the amount of cost a renovation of the present EL would have and the fact that state money is far far in the future if at all. I would love people to comment on this idea and I would enjoy the feedback.
the movie
We Were Soldiers
with Mel Gibson, if you did then you will understand the horrors of the Vietnam War and perhaps realize that being on a carrier is work, dangerous work, but nothing compared to facing the enemy eye to eye as was shown in this movie. Granted it was a movie, but too real for most of us. God Bless our Soldiers, Sailors and Marines.
although not appreciated at that time, we all recognize that soldiers must do their duty whether they like it or not. I am proud of these guys and wish that I could have joined them, although I know that just the thought of going over there scared me to death. Let us all salute and pledge to assist these soldiers for as long as they live. They deserve every honor we can give.
we all should honor the Vets whom ever and where ever they are. A vet that is NOT supported by outreach systems, etc becrys the shame of our society today. Let us all be thankful that we have freedoms to be thankful for because of these brave men.
Bob,
I know you will do a great job and I only wish I could have voted for you after all the years we worked together in Lewiston. You were more than fair and an honest, reasonible Supt. Your addition will be an asset to the community at large. Best Wishes
PJB
Can you trust a person who won't give their exact age?
She has been on the board long enough and I feel it is time for a change. Hopefully in a positive direction.
Listen and vote for the at large candidates who will NOT rehire the former city manager. Thank is my opinion. I know that the incumbent will not rehire him, but which one of the others feels the same way?
I urge everyone to vote for Robert Connors. I was employed for 30+ years by the Lewiston School Dept. and I learned a lot from watching and listening to him even though we often disagreed. Regretfully I can not vote for him as I live in Auburn. However, I urge you to Vote Connors for the knowledge he brings to the position. Thank you. PJB
I would really like to know how each of the candidates feels about rehiring the ex city manager. Thank you.
It is understood that the incumbents voted him out, but what about the others?
Letters of criticism should be discussed in executive session, but if the council feels that it is appropriate (majority vote) to read them aloud in public session then it should be done as the community NEEDS to know what is happening behind closed doors and the city manager is an employee who not only needs to be accountable to the council, but also to the majority of the public. If the public is NOT informed, how can they judge whether or not these letters are just hate mail or honest fact. Please give them more consideration then a quick dismissal.
Yes, that could be an answer for Pre K instead of the multipurpose center and safety as well as parking are there ... good thinking Tina. We better jump on the idea before they take it down though.
It just isn't finding a space. It is finding the funds to heat the space during the Spring, Fall, and Winter months. If the school dept. allows seniors to use Pettingill School, then they have to add heating into their budget. What is needed is a relatively small space that is centrally located with some parking and heats well. If anyone knows of such a space please comment here. THank you
This is so typical of the attitude of the residents of the city of Lewiston. "I want it my way or I will throw a fit." Can you imagine the poor teachers who have to work for a person like her? Mr. Handy followed correct procedure. Perhaps just reading back the minutes to her would have satisfied her. Does the committee have a secretary to take minutes though? Perhaps she should have taken better notes herself? What was her question by the way and if Gus B. had already answered it then what was the answer? Lewiston, government at its lowest point of function.
looks to me like Auburn did an over all average job if you look at the last scores and compare them to the state. This is NOT bad, but obviously there is always room for improvement. I think that over the years the demographic would show highs and lows as the population relates to educational curriculum. All students might learn but as was indicated in a previous article the morning the learn at different rates. These rates can vary understanding a concept by as much as 12 to 18 months.
I would bet we all have had something that was difficult to understand, and later we would look at it and say "OH, yeah! Now I understand."
before you decide that this was another experiment gone too fast into the future as Auburn sometimes does. Results and the joy of learning cannot be measured by a simple price tag.
I urge all citizens to give it time, even if it takes two years or more. Remember each child learns at a different rate and some are ready when others are not... a large group picture is most objective.
Elementary schools have needed medical coverage for years. School nurses in my day were stretched between two or three schools and that always meant they were not usually somewhere when an accident occurred. This left the medical work to either the principal or a competent clerical person. Thank God for these people. They comforted many teary eyed youths in their moment of need. At the end of the year, school nurses were responsible for updating each child's school health record. This meant paperwork between 750 and 1000 student records. Too much for any one person to take on. Exactly how is medical coverage done in elementary schools for next year?
I said all that and I would always want someone who represents me to be knowledgeable about all areas especially those involving city personnel. There is nothing wrong about the question. Belinda tried to call me today but I was in the middle of a household project and couldn't take time to discuss this issue with her. If she will reply here, then we all can see how she feels about why she or any other councilor for that matter qualifies to judge negotiations between the city and its employees. Support for candidates varies but I believe that she believe what she does and says. I am only questioning the why.
I have never heard exactly what Belinda's previous experience is and how she obtained it. Someone I know told me that she has never worked and if that is true I would think that would taint how she would view the negotiations between the city and its police, fire fighters and teachers.
Can someone fill me in and I know that I would like to see it here in writing. Thank you.
I note that a couple of Maine events have in recent years changed the weeks or weekends which they were held because of the constant bad weather year after year. Perhaps looking back and trying to find a good week of weather or one when these balloons were NOT committed to flying somewhere else would be a good idea.
We laugh almost every year when Smokey's Great Show comes to Auburn and expect it to rain 80% of the time. They must get discouraged too.
L/A check weather history and find a different weekend.
this shows how crazy the state and government itself can be without even allowing Mr. Burton a chance to defend himself or following through on an investigation of this issue. It makes the whole political bureaucracy and especially the Maine Warden Service look like a bunch of single minded dumb kids who don't read and don't make an effort to understand what is going on around them.... I think this is a huge lack of Common Sense and so will anyone who reads this article.
Best of Luck Mr. Burton, you will need it dealing with these guys.
Farwell School not Farewell school unless there is another that I am
not aware of which there could be. However, elementary school is where you master spelling. Please add Farwell to you spelling checker.
Does anyone know where you can get shoes repaired? It seems years ago that several small shops existed in cellars on many Lewiston blocks. Today I can't find one to even fix a belt or a shoe, etc. Please respond if you know of anyplace in Lewiston, Auburn, or the surrounding area where shoes are repaired.
are reimbursed by the Federal government as I recall, but the amount is based on the previous years local budget expenditures and not on the present year.
As for Somali students in special education classes, I believe that this is wrong. Although there must be a Federal Law that says we can not discriminate against them by putting them all in one or two classes and teaching the group.
Being from another country and not knowing the language in this country does not, in my opinion, qualify anyone for special education, however, it should qualify them for language support or ESL which translates as English as a Second Language. I believe in EFL or English as a First Language which all of our forefathers had to learn the hard way. Just keep in mind that all newcomers to our country should speak English first and whatever else second. However, being a realist I know that this will not happen until the second or even third generation of Somalis or any other group that has immigrated to our shores.
is a profession where the teacher need to set high standards, but the state and federal government should stay out of the process. I agree that students need to be challenged and that giving word lists as well as math problems to do at home without help is very important.
These procedures are reminiscent of the procedure that were used in classrooms in the 70's. All the changes don't matter if there are not results that can be verified. Standardized testing is a waste of money for the most part. Keeping a child alert and challenged is what counts.
When asked if they wanted their child to go to another school that has higher reading and math standards, does either city provide transportation for these children? Certainly we could blame the government and state for their standards, but look at what a mess they are in when they try to set a debt ceiling.
Texas is correct and Maine is not. Let us follow the curriculum in Texas and see how much of a change that makes in scoring. Yes, I know the test should be in English or Somali because of the various languages. Texas must have a similar issue with Spanish speaking students from Mexico or those who just speak Spanish only at home.
We could take Farwell School and move the principal and half the staff again as was done in Lewiston at Longley School, but this can only be done so many times then what?
Perhaps we should all take notice of what "Cathy" says and demand that our schools be less liberal and more conservative in the curriculum especially ignoring the demands of liberal parents and forcing expectations on both students and parents. Setting HIGH standards is a good thing for everyone.
any one use this section of road unless they are desperate for a better and quicker connection under the present conditions.
A more pressing question is "When or IF" the city will change the yield sign (by removing it altogether) at the corner of MT. Auburn Ave and Summer St (or is that Summer St. extension) where there is now merely no sign at all.
As the MT. Auburn Ave road has become more and more the traveled route, there should be a STOP SIGN at the end of Summer St where it meets MT Auburn Ave. This would allow a quick and easy flow of traffic along what is becoming a major travel route.
On the ISSUE of repair, if the city owns the section of Summer St between Park Ave and Mt. Auburn Ave, it should be either repaired or discontinued all together. I vote to discontinue it and thereby solve all those nasty sign or road repair issues in the area.
This just leaves us with one question "What about that blind knoll on Mt Auburn Ave at the corner by the farm." It would be nice to see it reduced in some way and give travelers more visibility.
Hope .... Hope and wait... I would like to hear what city officials have to say about these ideas. Thank you.
went to St. Mary's to the psych unit. He has serious problems and
those do need addressing before he should be released or tries to do this again...he might succeed the next time.
Congrats to the officer. I know he and all emergency workers look at it as just another day of what they were trained to do, but we really appreciate having them even when they stop us for a traffic ticket.
To do the right thing in that area, the building at 31 Court St. property, home to Willis of Northern New England Inc., formerly The Dunlap Corp. and HRH Northern New England should be torn down. This would enhance the turning lanes and allow the widening of the bridge lanes more and more.
Someone is going to get killed just trying to get across Court St at the end of the bridge. Better turning and traffic signal and a wider crosswalk could replace the building.
I am sure that the city does not want to buy the building and go through the expense of tearing it down, however they have done more foolish things in the name of progress than this.
Can you imagine two lanes turning from the bridge on to Center St.
How wonderful that would be for traffic flow. As I said it will never happen, but I can wish for it in my lifetime.
Ms. Feldman is correct we have already paid for this kind of thing once and Yes, Ms. Hayes we know that being able to defend the plan is a good thing. However, let's be honest. Someone is going to take the money from the excessive account carried forward.
If you do what is correct parents will again complain no matter what. Do what is right. If you need to shut down East Auburn School and redistrict the students then do it. Stop looking around to the next election to protect yourself.
Parents can complain, but doing the correct thing takes courage and commitment. Believe in the plan as it was stated before and although East Auburn is a warm and friendly school close it if you must. The complaints will eventually calm down by the following year.
Changes in the budget are often painful, but some changes should NOT HAPPEN such as SNOW PLOWING and REMOVAL of it in order to allow drivers better views especially backing out of their own driveways. Some of us have to go out early in the mornings to get to work, real early and if the snow is not plowed except on the major streets where most people don't live it can be dangerous getting to the main drags.
Possibly councilor Gerry and Berube will not run also... hurray!!!!
I don't believe I have ever seen her (Gerry) at my door before election time explaining to me her points of view and asking for my vote.
Councilor Berube needs to work through the whole process with the group, he seems to have his own agenda and cares little for what else is happening in the room.
At least Councilor Hayes responds to emails or at least acts upon them at our behest. Thank you Bob.
I am sure that just leaving Lewiston and the related stress is enough to re-energize ANYONE. He is an excellent politician and I have long expected him to be appointed a commissioner of education or serve in an executive capacity in state government somewhere. Although we did not always agree, I knew that he did what he felt he had to according to the events. Best of luck.
When I was told that they were closing for remodeling, I originally thought that they meant the interior only.... then WOW, most of the old building is gone. I will be anxious for my first burger from the to see if it is as good as the old ones or better. Best of Luck.
One man in both cities causing such a fuss. Does he pay taxes in both and where does he legally reside? That city is where he should take his comments to and not someplace else unless he owns property in the other.
Does anyone know where he lives/how much property if any in the other city? I feel that only taxpayers or impacted residents of a city should be allowed to speak at council meetings. It is NOT a forum for political outcry against a government or the dealing of a national government.
Oh, renters who are not property owners should also be allowed to comment during an open session in the city that they live in
Must be really in need of money. How much can you get from Sam's and does that person realize that the crime is going to get them a long sentence because of what they said ... I doubt it, don't you?
Would like to see that building that has been in the way for years moved back much farther so that this lane could start right from the bridge. I believe it says WILLIS on the building. If it were a regular residence the city would have taken it by eminent domain by now...so if you're doing something why not do it correctly.
Any sport in which the fans operate with tunnel vision is just wrong. Keeping an open mind about this is what cost Lewiston the team. Fan support of a minority of people who claimed it was their team didn't really matter as more people many more people had to share their opinion about this or any other sport. Lewiston / Auburn is NOT LARGE enough to command any pro, semi-pro, etc. team....the population and fan base are not large enough. Regardless of the canadian hockey league or not, the reason that the portland pirates can operate is the fan base in a much larger city/cities in that area. Comparing Portland to Lew/Auburn is a sad comparison. There is not much here to attract anyone where in Portland they have the old port, the harbor, minor league baseball, minor league hockey, etc... based on a much larger population.... so no sport will survive in this area... reason with me that the facts are demographic and cannot be overcome by constantly repeating your joy for hockey locally.
Duh! How dumb can you be to continue hockey after this shows that hockey is a failure in this area.
The only fans are those who have children in local programs. Although this is nice for the locals, it will do nothing for the area. Parents want their child to be a star or at least be on a championship hockey team.
I was there the night that several dozen people attended a meeting urging either the city council or the school committee to buy the local rink. This too turned out to be a mess didn't it? The city lost money and the people who pushed for the purchase were in the end just a small vocal group.
If any other hockey issues are put forward, I would think the wise thing to do, and the cheapest in the end, would be to put it to a city wide vote so if the tax payers had to pick up any cost at least they would have voted for it.
Reason with me everyone, put those hockey feelings aside and think of the issue, the local revenue generated does not offset any financial backing a franchise would need, there are other means to generate revenues locally besides HOCKEY...!
charter schools probably work best in very large cities like New York. They would draw talent from across several neighborhoods. This might work in the public section. Surely the best scenario would be privately funded schools and the state offering scholarships for students who do well on national test, not these local tests that the state requires. I see this as the Maine option. Overnight schools, motivated students with the same interests, working outside of the guideline that requires them to have special needs students who really cause a distraction in a working environment. This is obviously something that the Maine Civil Liberties Union would parade and cry against. However, we have come a long way to integrating special needs students within the local school systems. If we only allow a few students to join these schools, then there is no huge drain on the local system. How many drop outs have the systems worked with in order to account for their body in the classroom just to have state and federal funds in the system? An experiment worth the effort, yes, more private than public, but leaving the door open for some talented students to become highly motivated in this new environment. Looks like the hiring practices of instructors is the next question. Certification within a couple or three years seems fair if the individual(s) have an appropriate background in (ex) math or science or technology. Perhaps a retired professor from another state or even a former disenchanted administrator who wants to get back to the classroom. Ok, Claire, we know each other and I am the more conservative of the two of us at this point in time although you know what a liberal I used to be.
Have a great day and weekend.
is a job. Everyone who has one should look around and see all the people who are not working who want a job. To pay someone for doing duties that are assigned to them through a system wide restructuring is to be expected that this is NOW part of their job, not another job, not an additional job for which they would get a stipend, but this is now their job... and they need to do it. As for the various budget items, the city council is confused and I don't for once blame them. It is the city manager's job to clarify how the budget comes together for the council. If he can not do this and has created a mess with his administrative plan then the city needs to find someone who can do the job...for the money he is paid clarity is essential. Politics has caused Auburn to lose many good and efficient city managers or potential candidates. The job should be one of who can do the best and the politics need to be put aside. Performance is what counts and that doesn't seem to be happening. However if we applied the same standard to the city council only about half of them would be there and it is the fault of the citizens of auburn for not coming up with better candidates in some wards. Without naming names just look at who is the most confused members of the council and place them in the same category as the city manager. Please replace some of these councilor in the next election. Reasoning is sound if you look at the meeting on cable t.v.
Your seeking to prepare students for what in your opinion is an unsure future. This means that your not sure what your doing is correct either. I would agree with the dvd and the communications skills that you expect them to produce. However, this is like preparing for jobs that do not even exist isn't it? I am a big believer in the Basic Skills of 4 years of Math, 4 of Science, 4 years of English, and 3 years of history. I'll bet that employers need students who can make change without a computer or cash register telling them how much to give out. Being able to do things manually is also very helpful, driving nails, using basic tools to build things your employer might need, but MOST OF ALL ... we need to equip them with common sense... this is learned by repeating different learning situations or solving the same. What if the light goes out? Did the bulb burn out or was the circuit overloaded and the breaker in the panel box tripped. This is the kind of logic we need to teach out students. I hope you will understand my reasoning.
I have known these people for a very long time and I have nothing but good things to say about them. One time after selling several large items, I paid for everyone's meal and drinks with a hundred dollar bill. However, as I checked my wallet upon leaving, I discovered that perhaps 2 of these bills might have stuck together. They stopped everything and rechecked the cash receipts. Sure enough I had overpaid and they were more than happy to refund me the $100 bill. How honest and nice can you get. Plus the root beer and food is wonderful, so revisit your youth and enjoy their food and hospitality. You won't be disappointed.
We welcome good people to Auburn. The trashy people can stay where they are. Maine is a welfare state and many move here for that also others came because the Catholic Charities of Maine brought them here... thank you very much CCofM... you should have to pay for their welfare, rent, food, etc. not the state taxpayer.
I cheer on the Celtics, but as I said the other day I believed at this moment the heat were the better team.
Let's hope that they go all the way which will minimize the issue of losing. When you lose to a champion, then you don't feel as bad as when you lose to a runner up....Have a restful summer, good drafts and a better year next year.
I say NO to this technique for riding the lake of Geese. Capture the adults BEFORE they start to lay eggs and relocate them. It seems like murder to destroy the internal workings of an egg. This reminds me of an abortion without the consent of the mother.
Shame on you, there must be a better way and if not, close this section off from the drinking water or find a more humane way to deal with the problem of the geese.
Relocate, do not destroy, capture for as long as it takes. Reason must prevail.
As a gun owner, trained and certified to carry; I know this will stir- up the "Outlaw all guns group." This represents a migrant "visitor" that could care less about laws and or gun safety.
I applaud the Lewiston Police on their handling of this incident in a prompt and professional manner, despite the neighborhood and audience. The end of the video depicts the true mentality of the young bystanders. Respect for authority seems to be a joke to them, and apparently they do not care who knows this.
Good job LPD, from an Auburn respectful citizen.
but understandable as public broadcasting is a very liberal medium and the Gov. is very conservative. However, the programs presented by MPBN and its affiliates informs and educates the section of the population that does not agree with the Governor. My conservative views still allow enough room for MPBN and it certainly should be allowed to continue to present a balance of opinion in today's world. It is dumb to cut funding off and say there we have balanced the budget or justify it in that it saves the Clean Election Act. Beware when all you hear is one song of knowledge and justice in the world.
This is such a wonderful thing that is done for many of the need in our community. High Praise should be given to these dental practices for their work year after year. When will other practices begin to follow their example? We know that it will be difficult for them to see all the needy people. If others could other it later in the year wouldn't it be wonderful!
will be to find a new assistant for McMahon Elementary school. With all the physical plant changes happening at McMahon, a new vibrant person should be chosen. I fail to understand why the school committee has chosen the MOST liberal principals to lead other elementary schools. Don't they make a vibrant CONSERVATIVE or at least MODERATE administrator any more?
In my opinion, the school committee has gone too far to the left in order to obtain federal and state funds. Allowing government to control schools is the first step toward controlling the minds of the next generation. Does this mean that the values taught are liberal too? Yes, it probably does.
What happened to a moderate and middle ground where we taught balance in views and then let students decide as they became adults themselves? It died with the rise of testing and the increase of government funds for certain areas of education.
Please think back to your childhood. Compare your education and recall the amount of major yearly testing that was done. You survived and grew into adulthood without the chaos that these government departments have created. Wasn't the education better in the 70's, 80's or even the early half of the 90's than it is today?
If you feel it is then organize against such control and elect those at the state and federal levels who will return us back to sanity. Teachers love to teach NOT test. Do this for your children and grandchildren.
than the Lakers, regardless of the final outcome. The Lakers were embarrassed in that last game especially and Boston has made it a contest in most games.
However, I believe that the inevitable final put Dallas against the Heat and that should be well worth my time to watch the entire game, not just the highlights. Best of Luck Boston!
this seems very appropriate to have the Sheriff's Dept move into the former police building. Let's hope that happens. It would get them out of that old decrepit-ed building and into something better. This would benefit the city and the county in the long run.
come out of tragedy don't they. I hope we will all check out these puppies and those of us who can will give them the home and love they deserve. Certainly they give us plenty of love regardless and we all can use plenty of that in today's world.
How much registration is a good thing? When will the extensive data base be turned against those who honestly purchased weapons for hunting or self protection? It is great that we should be careful who we sell guns to, but this does not prevent all the illegal guns already on the street from being removed. What about the Mexican Drug Lords and their weapons? Who is supplying them? Probably many people in the southwest because these murders can afford to pay five time the value for any gun and have bought off many of the border patrol to just look the other way. Maine has no fear of drug wars, but look further south and you need to more closely check them. Also check the states in the mid Atlantic Area where sales seem to be very easy to accomplish. Do they get checked enough?
Regional issues develop into national issues and is this becoming one? Probably! We the home owners of the USA need to defend ourselves against the criminals of the world both political and foreign.
I wish us much luck.
This is just another sign of the times. It used to be the propagation of the faith was enough to sustain the church and they grew they would all go to church and participate in the religious community. However, in the last 40 yrs. the family as a unit has desintegrated and the free thinking individual has become the focus of society. Churches close because children no longer believe or attend or just moved away. The larger churches always had large attendence and with that came large amounts of money in the form of donations. With the recent sex scandals in the Catholic Church during the past decade, many have had their faith shaken. Why not? Those who were supposed to be the examples of the faith have proven unworthy of any support as have several of their superiors who covered things up by moving priests around the state or region. I love old well build buildings and it is very sad to see them come down, but our memories and faith in what we learned can never be destroyed by perverts. Like any large group, the priesthood has its rotten apples, but let's focus on the good memories. This will not save several churches from closing, but it might help our senior citizens cope with the losses of their faith, at least in the physical sense. Remember the spirit of an individual is great and can be made even greater by sharing these positive memories with others. In conclusion, I blame the Catholic Church for the problems in the priesthood. Certainly the one thing that the Protestant Church does and the Catholic Church should do is allow its priests to marry. I believe the first nine hundred years of church history showed this to be a viable option. Please correct me if I am in error.
I believe that Ms. Paradis should be more concerned with the use of phrases like "very fun" in the writing and speaking of today's students and school staffers. Allowing it to be "ok" in the early grades is the kind of thing that should be discourage, not a word like "college". Does she plan on attacking the word "University" next? LOL
She may not be familiar with a program that the university of Maine ran about twenty-five years ago called the "World of Work" in which teachers from grade 5 through grade 12 were encourage to display books and talk about alternate educational programs to college.
We agree not everyone is suited for a 4 year education beyond HS, however extended learning will get you a better job.
Was Ms. Paradis referring to her school committee salary as opposed to what her son might be making at McDonalds? LOL I doubt that is true, however, I would like to know exactly what amount she does make and what her son to accurately compare or comment further.
Is it just MC? I recently had an issue with my MC and fortunately it was picked up by the MC Paypal Fraud Acct. people. As it was not tied to my business, I was able to have all charges dismissed. I believe that these charges were linked to an expense I was supposed to have made in Africa. Oh boy, as if there were not enough reasons to stay away from Africa. Now I have another.
Finally a place for a system of learning the was attempted almost ten years ago in Lewiston.
Let's not rush to blame them though as I was told that the state had MANDATED these changes.
Teaching is an art form and you cannot mandate a baseline change in curriculum. Most children learn respective to their age. The Holistic curriculum that I speak of had a small paperback book and you were supposed to integrate your curriculum into it for at least half the day. This created a monstrous reference notebook of some 4" for each little paperback book. It was widely accepted by most as what else can we do. My disagreement with this development put me out the "nonconformist" list of teachers. As I was at the end of my teaching career, I did not care how I was labeled.
I can see now that the TRUE place for this type of expanded teaching is at the 6, or better 7-8 grade levels when all the basic skills like math, spelling, etc have been taught and learned within a nominal middle range for elementary students. Yes, teach elementary students the way we taught them in the 70's and 80's, then turn them loose on this form of learning and I think that you'll find this kind of success all through the state educational community.
Hurray for Portland's King Middle School students and teachers on a job well done. Did they have access to the state computer laptop program? I hope so.
couldn't agree more that politicians should be working with business to keep the price of K-1, gas, etc down as we know these giant companies make billions of dollars in profits each year. I am not against someone making a profit, but the point is those who are on fixed incomes are hurt by the kind of increases mentioned here. I support the open door policy of businesses telling us what kind of price markup they paid and what we are paying them.
Has anyone seen a map of the routes that the plows take during phase one and two, and of course phase three and four in Auburn. Please publish this as my section of the street is sometimes overlooked and plows go into Pett. Park instead of going up and down the length of Winter St first. What prompts the plow to do this? Certainly the park doesn't pay taxes. We do. So no one should be going into the park in the middle of the storm anyway. Do the taxpayers a favor and plow us first and last...We do not like being forgotten... I await a view of the MAP.
Renee' Bernier cutting a benefit for her father. Chances are better at winning the lottery. Even back when she was on the school committee, she used to look at him as how to vote. Daddy's little girl will not cause problems for him. Reason this out.
When will we learn that you just can't throw money at a problem and expect it to be fixed! Oh does the city get reimbursed for the teachers hired for the English as a Second Language Instructors (that is what they were called when I went to school) just as we call Bi-Polar (manic/depressive)personalities today. Giving fancy or different names does not change the situation. Most of these students and their families come to the state of maine because of our EASY welfare roles in which there is no time to wait, just sign up and get your benefits. Workfare is what is needed, not welfare.
Do you realize that the School Committee of Lewiston has to pay the teachers for these 660 students and in doing so it has to take the money away from other accounts to pay for added staffing. Let's imagine that there were no ELL teachers needed. This would save the city roughly 1.23 million per year...yes, that much and while the city waits a year for the state to reimburse this amount as it is considered special education funds that amount is supposed to be given back at 100% the following year. In the meantime, the city takes funds from reserve accounts, etc to fill these gaps.
New students arrive because we have a minority group in the Lewiston area who are Somali
s and of course we ask how did they get here. The Catholic Charities of Maine is responsible for the importation of these people to Maine. I have not seen any positive results in having this new minority present. Some would argue that we saved their lives by getting them out of their home country. I wonder if this is accurate. What have they contributed to our community in a positive manner since their arrival? Reason needs to see that these minorities are contributing and no, we are not interested in the fact that they enhance us in a broad worldly knowledge of other cultures and races. If they receive welfare, what are they doing to make Lewiston or Auburn a better place for all of us to live?
If they don't add to the community, what are they doing here. Oh, I know they are here to bleed the local and state welfare systems dry. This is not a bigot speaking it is a voice of concern and reason. Do not be swayed by liberal tendencies. Ask for an honest return for your money. Wouldn't Lewiston be better off putting that 1.23 million somewhere where it could do good? It doesn't come out of your city taxes, but does come from state revenues.
Consider!
You can't change stupid, you can't fix the attitude that if my family is on welfare, then why work, I can get pregnant, get on welfare, the government will pay for it. In truth, it is the middle class who pay for it. Workfare, not welfare... Kids need to be taught AT HOME the value of an education. Schools should NOT have to replace the family in teaching kids the value or social morals that are required for life. Parents should be setting the example. Kids learn from examples. Schools should teach subject matter, parents should teach religious and social values. When you combine these things, you get a powerful product.
However, don't kid us the Lewiston School Dept. is reimbused for the number of students who are enrolled each year. If the number drops, then the state reinbursement drops. This amount can be... are you ready as high as four thousand dollars per student or as low as sixteen hundred dollars per student. It all feeds into a state formula which returns money to the schools the following school year. Now Special Education is the kind that really saps the local finances because it is the true pay now local school systems and maybe the state will have enough money from the feds next year to give you the full amount back, ask any administrator in any school system in this state what an "Unfunded Mandate" is... simply put the state says the school system must do something and pay for it and Oh, sorry you don't get refunded for it. Our total social network has fallen apart and we expect the schools to fix it. Sorry it can't be done ... if parents work closely with the school system then perhaps, or I sometimes wonder when and where did a generation slip though without parental guidance and was that the turning point of our whole local society?
Reason this through, you will see what I mean and can easily find examples in those around you or even in your own family.
Reason knows this one just replaces a similar one at the same location, however, just how many restaurants can A/L support. A/L stands for Auburn-Lewiston, as we are tired of hearing it put in the wrong order alphabetically and it should start with quality and decend which it now does using A/L. I urge all citizens of Auburn to use this new and proper notation in all communication.
Bars, Restaurants, Night Clubs, and fast food joints. Just how many are there in total and in each catagory ? Couldn't the Sun Journal do an article on these places in total?
Reason does wish Bill Welch the best of luck in his new venture.
It is my understanding that those people who lost their jobs at CMMC, or at least some, were met at the door by their supervisors and a security officer, told that they had to clean out their lock, escorted to it, and off of CMMC property. No notice was given, etc... all I can say is if that is true, that is a pretty HARSH way to to treat people. I come from a different environment where people are given two week notices, doesn't CMMC expect that of its own people when they leave (to give appropriate notice)? SO IS IT OVER? Will there be more cuts down the road, will cuts be in personnel or salary? Just how many bodies can be cut and still maintain quality care in this institution? Far better that IF there is another round that that they cut (entirely) top administration positions (saving of hundreds of thousands of dollars just there), and next take a percentage salary reduction for the remainder of the staff, BUT IT MUST END SOMEWHERE, and can't keep going on and on. I also note that I did not see that any of the Board of Directors returned any salary or benefits (if they receive any at all. I, along with many many others, urge the state to pay their bills to the hospitals to maintain the quality of care that remains. PLEASE PLEASE SAVE OUR LOCAL HOSPITALS. YES, local consolidation is not possible as there are wide philosophical gaps, but it would make a lot of sense wouldn't it. OF COURSE, it would.
The Bedard family and its now 3 generations of pharmacists are a welcome addition to Auburn. Anyone who has tried to visit their site on Lisbon St knows how difficult the parking in that area can be and how dangerous it is to leave the parking lot. A great family, a great business reputation and helpful staff. Auburn is lucky to get such a business for this property and Reason hopes that we will all benefit and enjoy the relationship.
The city needs to have a truck come up Winter St all the way before it circles back down into the park to plow. We pay taxes and expect services. Oh, I have been told that these are parks and rec. trucks, but they are NOT. The size and color are all wrong.
Please plow up and down our street, then come back around and go down into the park and do what is needed.
Citizens who pay taxes, need services first, not the park and rec dept. as they are already part of the city...
Remember how hard Lewiston worked for this designation? What ever happened to those who felt that it was important to have this? It is obvious that those who decide things no longer care about the looks of the city. I vote that they give back the All American City designation if they cannot keep up appearances. Yes, we all understand that time are tough and money is tight, but use the few dollars that are needed where they will serve the city best. Portland's Old Port is charming because they keep the area in a clean and traditional manner. No asphalt or duct tape found there.
Cheers for the Editorial Board to bring this issue up again, but What took you so long to chastise the City of Lewiston? Someone needs to act as a conscience for the city and you have the power and voice to do it, so please don't wait 8 more years for this to happen again. Reason is with you.
Don't Blame Teachers, they don't set the school calendar, that is the issue that is done by the local school boards. We agree that the school year has been made longer, but that was done because the school committee in Lewiston (at least) wanted MORE workshop days for teachers. Other than the first day meeting for all school staff, there is not a need for these extra days. Many years ago, the school committee put these in as a way of stretching out the school year so that it would LOOK LIKE teachers didn't get paid any more as they are contracted yearly and their rate is figured on a per diem amount spread over the number of school days... thus adding more days lowers the per diem, makes it seem like the teachers make less, but in fact they make more ... adding days instead of increasing the daily rate...
No teachers like these days, if offered, I believe that the attendence should be optional or at least allow them to be in the building doing other more positive things than sitting in a room listening to someone who thinks they are a specialist....ha ha...
Why not have heat days, it is JUST a matter of inserting a word or two in the master contract so it reads "...heat days or snow days are both considered STORM DAYS..." which shall be determined at the discretion of the local Supt. of Schools.
There now you have your answers... reason them out and use your political force to tell your city councilors and school committee members what simple changes need to be made.
Reason with ME!
I believe that when they opened the ground up in my neighborhood, they found the water lines were not exactly where they thought or as deep as they thought.
My biggest objection is that the Gas Line runs under the sidewalk right in front of my house because of the water or storm drain connection/separation. I asked and they said that nothing could be done. The gas company has to move gas lines and now there is an entanglement of these in front of my house that prevents the gas line movement in the future.
My street is scheduled for repaving within the next three years. Can't someone from the gas company and all these other utilities work together to get things correct. Certainly the water line could be moved and the gas line installed, then the water line replaced. I hope that this will be discussed before repaving occurs and then you have to dig it up again.
Great and keep up the effort. It will pay off in dollars as you get more and more education regardless of how old you are. Never stop learning...It is an honor to see you at this point in life and you have so much more to learn... go forward, live, love, and learn.
These are great Reasons.
Money makes money isn't that what the saying is and in this case it seems that this could benefit us all in turning around a neighborhood.
Too bad the trains no longer run as we could use those today too. Has anyone noticed how traffic surges a peak hours in the morning and afternoon? Traveling by train is the ultimate. I remember a trip to Boston with my Dad to see the Red Sox play and we rode the train both ways... nice memory.
Reason with me why the second largest community in the state does not have passenger rail access? Isn't that the same thing that they said we didn't need a branch of the University of Maine here either. Many years later, as always, they are proved wrong again. WOW ! What a surprise!! We know that freight trains use the local tracks just ask those who live in Auburn about midnight most days.
Reason that we need less pollution and better transportation. Trains can do both, so let's see us connect with Brunswick or wherever AmTrac is extending to... Check into this Senator Snowe.... thank you.
Can we get a computer download and print out showing * of where these individuals live so that it is possible to avoid those areas entirely... Please show compassion and help us to prevent any conflicts ... avoid the problems, not confront them... Reason knows this is the best way. Posting it via an editorial or new item would be very helpful. Thanks
Finally a smart move on the part of the city council...status quo... hurray for common sense. We Reason this is a vote for the people and should remain this way forever.
sad that we are encroaching on the wildlife, or as Joanie Mitchell put it "paved over paradise and made it a parking lot." With the bank and more people in this area, We are sure that there will be more sightings and fox deaths... too bad...
Leave things alone, they work fine. Belinda is correct. THE WORSE PLACE would be city hall and its parking garage. It is a poor choice when the city wanted to vote on one item in the past and would be a worse choice with all districts moving into that area. Perhaps the high school gym if enough parking is available in the lower area and the field is made available. As the gym is one of the few buildings up there that might not fall in on you while you're voting...LOL. We however feel that walking to polling places is as important to citizens as the second amendment is to bear arms. WOW, nice comparison even if I do say so myself. Reason with me.
Pirate,
If you ever worked for a group like a school system, you would know that if you did not agree with the "Master Plan" for the system wide education, then you could be fired if there were not unions. Within the first two years, any teacher for example can be let go without what is legally called "Just Cause" and after that they must show WHY other than the color of your eyes or skin that you were dismissed. Unions do have a purpose, however, before you run out and join one please understand that it cuts both ways. You may HAVE to do things you don't like or didn't want to do such as attend meetings after work or go outside and stand around in the cold weather just to name a few reasons. Yes, Unions are both good and bad, but it depends on what you need for job protection and are willing to do to have to keep your job... thoughts to reason with for your day.

No promises should be made if they can not be kept. However, the costs to which you refer reflect much on the aging and retired population of firefighters, police, teachers, administrators, and municipal works. These people were promised something and now the state must deliver.
Ok, if those entering a profession understand the limits of the job benefits, all is fine, but the retired members of the state work force should get what is due them. It was promised.
The state has raided the pension fund in Jim Longley's time and that was a poor thing to do. I am not sure how much if not all of it has been paid back, but the recent economic downturn has deminished everyone's retirement fund reserve.
Things will bounce back in the stock market as they always do, but it takes time. Patience and the belief that state government can do the job will support an economic turnaround. Serve those who served you well in years pass, it is the honorable thing to do and must be done.
Guess you stayed to the right side of the store huh. If you had mozied over to the left side you would have encountered a wonderful and large selection of fire arms. Yes, they do buy and sell at very competitive prices. Protect yourselves ladies. Learn to shoot or at least wave it in the air and yell "Yippie" when you find a bargain worthwhile. Remember no shooting in the store...LOL
Well, with all the cuts and freezes... can you believe that the top execs at CMMC make a salary of seven figures... the rational is they want to keep their BEST people. Gee, for over a million or TWO in this part of the nation that much money is not only obscene, but it flys in the face of the general public who pay health insurance. CMMC would not have a cash flow problem if both top execs took a 25% pay cut for a year. The Board of Directors should be ashamed for allowing this to happen...or at least publically state how much of a reduction the management has taken in both % and dollars. Just like public schools, administrators are over paid and workers take the brunt of the reduction...Please ask the question over and over to see if we can get an honest response... not some political jargon about the best need to be paid... We believe that nursing/emergency/laboratory work is more important to patient care than what these guys at the top do... This also goes for the folks at St. Mary's too... We await Mr Chalke's response and that of other execs. at both hospitals.
Rules and their changes come and go. However, it is important to maintain a basic form of communication. You do not throw out rules because you do not like them or that based on research acknowledge their no compliance to your set of standard is not desired. Rather the most modern standard seems to be usage. As much as I hate agree with this newest rule, I find that words are introduced into the dictionary based on common usage.
I believe that form and structure are important. Rules guide us in everything we do. Why not let rules give structure to language. Many people do not follow these rules except when writing and much of that is not done even today. If we allow rules to crumble into ruin, we will be a society with regional and then decay even further to local language. Maine with not be able to communicate to New York, the U.S.A. will not be able to communicate to Canada, and the world will be in ruin. We need rules and we need structure. Communication is the most important thing we do in the world today. Oh yes, I know that we have moved away from the one country and one language concept of a hundred years ago, but I blame this on the large influx of Hispanics into the southern US. These people come across the border without the proper papers and are not required to take a language course or US history to become citizens. Instead they sneak into our country, they steal our money and services because of our liberal policies.
If you truly propose to change the English language, please come up with a better language. This language will need rules too. Try to create one for all races on our planet. If you cannot, please leave the English language alone. It has rules and they are not bad rules. Perhaps merely being a critic is part of the editorial boards function and perhaps they are just trying to get those of us who still love this language upset, I wonder don't you?
Reason believes that there just wasn't enough noise raised about the budget. However, we also find that the sun journal did not to our knowledge remind the public that this vote was upcoming. If we missed that notice, we apologize.
Lucky is the budget that can absorb cuts and remain level. Do not expect this to happen next year, or the year after. It can not happen year after year without significant damage to the educational process.
We still say that combining EL and Lewiston in Lewiston's huge building is better for the taxpayers of Auburn. Why? Because then Auburn pays tuition for the students to go to Lewiston, and avoids the multimillion dollar burden of a New High School unless the people of Auburn are so locked into the color red or a tradition of sports. Think of the power in sports that a combined basketball team or football or even baseball team would have and the chance to win state championships year after year. Oh, I digress. Parents live vicariously through their kids so that will never happen. God, if you cut a kid that had been primed for years to be Daddy's little hero or heroin then hell would be raise. However, there is also another alternative. St. Dom's who would well enjoy an influx of money and athletic talent in its ranks. Be wise Auburn, forget the chance to build another high school and let's make the high school kids tuition students. This will keep taxes down as EL is NOT ON THE LIST to have state reimbursement of 95% or more paid by the state. Also consider that the state is in financial trouble and this list may not exist or will be postponed for years. Reason says grab the financial opportunity while it exist. OH THERE IS ONE DRAWBACK, as always.!!! LEWISTON has to vote to accept those former EL students and the AUBURN MONEY. Reason DOUBTS that LEWISTON is smart enough to see the benefit in such a plan. REASON WITH ME>>>>
Time and effort have paid off for you. We applaud your achievement and understand how hard and time consuming it must have been from our own experiences.
Go forward and walk proudly, you have taken the hardest steps already and the most difficult one was the first one wasn't it?
Reason urges you to continue your education almost immediately as once you become comfortable with a new job, etc it will be hard to break that cycle and get back to learning more which in turn earns you more...PLEASE keep up the good work. Reason applauds you.
Oh dear, has the violence and convenience store robberies now spilled into the local supermarkets? Will we all have to start carrying our hand held pistols in the open like it was done in Portland the other day just to dissuade these people from thinking about doing this.
People will react when the violence becomes either overwhelming or they see it as threatening to their personal safety.
To prevent this, Reason suggestst that instead of cutting back budgets for such needed sections of the municipal budget that they hire MORE police and More firemen for the city. Safety and quality are what cities are built on and advertise so that people will live within their boundaries. Would you live in Detroit? Probably not, and perhaps we would not even want to live in Lewiston. Too many slum type sections, bars, hookers, etc. Crime migrates across the river and now Auburn is infected. Reason says Auburn needs a greater police force and visibility on the streets and parking lots. When was the last time you saw a cop walking a beat in Auburn? Patrol cars are nice, but you need to know your local officer like the first name of your mail man. Lewiston trys this with bikes, which work ok in the downtown sections, but not in the outer sections as you get away from the core of each city the vastness of Maine begins to impress and the connections between police and the local residence become vapor thin. Support a better budget especially for the police depts in both cities. Reason with ME on this.
Reason told you that fighting was an adult form of bullying and should be discouraged. Now Sr. wants to bring the dead issue claiming foul... ha ha, if he had really been interested in fighting he would have known about these issues and opposed them with the rest of his family members by his side. Training for fighting in Maine is not illegal, so train here and a go somewhere else and fight. We said earlier that our opinion was it brought the city image down and Lewiston's image doesn't need any help to go down further.
However, we do agree with Sr. on one fact. IF they allow the Mixed Martial Arts to take place for profit, then it is wrong to exclude boxing. Mixed Martial Arts has replaced boxing as the sport of choice by the American public. It is rare to ever see a boxing match on any form of cable, dish, etc. network today, but they allow the more violent Mixed Martial Arts. The answer to why is obvious. Society today is violent and this form of combat is the most violent and resembles computer games today. We also agree with Sr. that what today is called wrestling is far from the true form. It is very violent and people hit each other with tables, metal chairs, etc. Well, Reason for one believes this is not an event that should be allowed. However, again it has a large base of followers who are nearly as brain dead, if they believe it is real, as those who participate in it.
Reason says that all these violent sports should be banned. However, it is NOT FAIR for some to continue while others remain excluded. Yes, the law should be amended. Either ban them all or allow them all INCLUDING BOXING which when you put it into prospective is the least violent of them all. Sadly, that may be why it is no longer as popular. Best of Luck in your quest for fairness. Reason hopes that you will be allowed to box if the others continue to perform their events. Perhaps one commission to oversee all these violent sports is the best answer and it makes budget sense if there are enough events and people participating in them. We suggest to the state that they could add on a fee to each ticket to support this omni commission as everything else is taxed in Maine one more thing would not even be noticed.
If we all went nude, they would laugh at some men. Really though, if we all went nude then we might be forced to shape up our bodies more as we might be embarrassed by how fat or ugly the stuff is that we hide under all those layers of clothing. However, We do not advocate going outside nude in the Maine winters. We would hate to freeze anything vital, or not so vital depending on our age. Reason laughs at all the fuss over nudity... We are all born naked, and although it may be hard for some to believe we are all born White too. It is only after birth that the skin pigment really begins to change. Truly we are one race of men and women on this world. Reason thinks you should believe this for it is true.
retired teacher should enjoy her retirement and not go back or volunteer. You will see it so differently, and you will be so disappointed. Don't lose those good memories by returning. Enjoy life with your husband, it is too short to waste back at school.
It will take at least 5 years for you to get school routine out of your head. It is time to enjoy yourself, if you reall want to be in the school, then don't retire. You will build up a bigger pension to support yourself later in life.
Reason says make a choice and stick with it. No vacilating allowed.
Praise all teachers for putting up with the public.
Praise all teachers for parenting and essentially raising our children.
Praise the school system for feeding our kids breakfast, lunch, healthy snacks, etc.
Praise the welfare system for keeping people at home having kids to receive more money each month.
Praise the federal government for giving us the money to support these people with food stamps, section 8 housing or buy them cars, etc.
Our ancestors may have come to this country and not been able to speak English, but they learned because they had to do it. Many immigrants should be learning English and practicing it where ever they go. Speaking in a foreign language in public places just makes them seem more foreign and turns more people against them. Do you really want to merge into the great American melting pot? Reason says time will tell.
Perhaps the second or third generation will be the ones we can really judge.
Reason does not mind helping those in need. Reason minds a welfare state that includes required education, did you know that the cities are refunded from the state based on a per pupil cost and if the drop out rate is high, they lose money, so it is a business decision to try to keep kids in school, not a lofty moral issue as it is pretended, as the loss would be between $1000 to $2000 per student per year.
Welfare NO, workfare Yes. Why pay people to sit at home when they are healthy or semi-healthy and could contribute to the community plus gaining valuable experience in the workplace?
Reason hopes that none of these people have religious conflicts with working or fear that they might be sexually harassed in the workplace were they to be employed. If we allow that then what next? Why should any of us ever work?
If being naive to the influences around you and your students is praiseworthy, then she deserves a mountain of praise as do all those who stick their heads in the sand and do what they are told without thought for the long term consequences of the curriculum on their beloved students.
We praise her for her longevity and her love of her students. We criticize the lack of leadership amongst her peers which could have had untold positive consequences on several hundred or more other students.
Survivors in education tend to be those who goes with the flow and not those who oppose it. Reason sees her as one who goes with the flow.
Good education comes from strong professionals who lead at school and within their association. The trouble is that many have become frustrated and given in to the system by either retiring or becoming building principals to even supt. of schools.
Someone once said that you rise to your level of incompetence which to us means that good teachers stay a their successful grade level while bad ones become bad principals and worse supt. of schools. Politics is the killer of education. Teachers know what is right for their grade level students, not politicians in Washington.
Reason with ME... education for the children by teachers like this wonderful lady who love their students and we know she could design the curriculum better than any president, past or present, with more success. Sure different regions of the country have different needs, but perhaps the best education was given out between 1950-1970. Look at today's leaders except for the politicians and you find well educated and thoughtful people. What has happened since 1970 to this country and its education system are a shame. Did the war in Vietnam do this to us? Reason does not know although it was a very divisive time wasn't it!
Obviously she was not turned off by the change in administrative approaches to education over the last decade.
Anyone who last this many years and enjoys all these changes is a special person or just insensitive. None of these changes have ever shown to improve the quality of education just the testing and testing that so often occurs now.
Reason wonders how many of you know that much of the second grade curriculum is a repeat of grades K and 1 with some new material thrown in. It is a great year for most kids and they really enjoy it. Second grade teachers are often praised and they often have great personalities.
Your average teacher cannot withstand the stress of the testing results demanded of them. If you check with the Maine Teachers Association in Augusta, you will find that most retire between twenty-five and thirty years. Males in elementary schools retire earlier than those in the other two branches.
She must have had small classes from the beginning with 18 or less to only have had this. Many elementary school teachers normally have 25 to 30 per year which would put the her total number of students closer to 1000.
Reason says well done, regardless of the interaction with administration or the state's rules or even the "No Child Left Behind." We are glad to see some educators recognized for their undying commitment to the children. Teacher's know what is best for the children, but not most parents, the local district, state or even the federal government.
Reason urges educators to stand up and revolt against this liberal tyrany from the feds, state and local systems, yet we wonder could it be all tied to the feds and state payments to the local school system that makes the changes in education whether they are right or wrong.
Reason thought it was Paul Amnott or is that someone else? Also we agree with Mr. Handy, you should tell those drivers where to do, but it's not a lane! SO Reason agrees with the safety issues for Lewiston HS, now that is a change.
Reason believes this is a lose, lose, lose situation. It was not his fault that his mother did that to him and his daughter should have known better unless she thinks she can still sue someone. There is no money left in the class action suit. Maybe she should be in that institution, obviously she is not too smart.
It's time to elect sanity in Auburn when all they want to do it cut. There is no thing as a zero budget. All that means is going backwards because costs always go up. Fuel for buildings, negotiated contracts are locked in, etc. What do they decide to cut? Of course, cut those things our community needs. Police in the schools, trash pickup, spring cleaning which is very important to how the city looks regardless of the cost. Those who live on fixed incomes, and we are one of those, realize that things go up and budgets tighten. Will the extra one hundred dollars or so a year cause us great harm? Monthly it is about the cost of two packs of cigarettes and if you still smoke it is another reason to stop. Ten dollars a month, yes, it might cost you another ten the year after and so on, but it is the price of owning a home or property. IF you were to sell your home and move out of state, where would you go and what would the cost be of a home there? Do taxes go up or down or stay the same? Is crime low, and are the majority of citizens in your social/ethnic group? Heating is Maine is a crime, but we endure it. Live in Florida, it sure cost less to register your vehicle about 35 dollars verses several hundred here. Wow, that amount is set by the local community I think...amazing... huh... Love our city or leave it. Arizona and Florida await you, enjoy to trip or pay for the privilage of living in the best state in the USA. Reason with ME.
Ok, What are the response times for the police if they are based on Minot Ave? Where are the most traffic accidents and crimes in Auburn? Has all this been calculated into the equation to move things around? What are the plans for the old police station if this happens?
Perhaps a better plan would be to station a couple of cruisers at each substation and a couple at city hall. Makes more sense to spread out the coverage.
Of course, I am really a fan of combining all police, fire and education with Lewiston. I think that this could save each city huge amounts of money. Perhaps then Auburn wouldn't have to build a multimillion dollar school, but could share Lewiston's vast site. Education budgets are shrinking and it seems time to make the hard choice of taking the best teachers of each system and making one great educational system. Once the new EL is built, this plan would never go forward.
Think about the cost of education, it amounts to about 52 percent of each city budget. Taxpayers, would you object to what would amount to approx. 25 percent reduction in your tax bill? I, Reason, doubt it very very much.
I know it means giving up the wonderful EL which is falling down and may not pass the state inspection to be certified very soon. Those who will object most would be former students, and I applaud that loyalty. However, we must reason what would be best for the children, taxpayers, etc. This is a worthy plan and should be explored more. I, Reason, expect that Lewiston would NOT be willing to participate in this even if it saved their taxpayers the same 25%. There is not an logic on that side of the river.
Reason with Me and discuss this with your councilors today before a new EL is built and taxes increase.
Perhaps next I shall consider the violent sport of football and soccer as well as field hockey and lacrosse, I told you that Lewiston wouldn't accept the correlation between violence in sports and bullying in schools didn't I. Is the education system wrong to stop bullying on the playground? Doesn't violence extend itself into other areas if deferred at school. Are the parents violent who have violent children. Remember the parent that killed a hockey ref or coach a couple of years ago somewhere in our beautiful country? Admit your flaws! Stand up and be the parent your kids can be proud of and denounce violence. Want violence then let them join the military when they are old enough, plenty of violence there. Let children be children, sure, and let bullying exist, ok by me, but the establishment is so liberal that this issue becomes extremely contested ... I belileve that I survived the bully on the playground, the thing that scares me the most is the Ultra liberals and their attitudes today. Yup, I think I have come full circle on this today.
Just what Lewiston needs another set of Gamache's pounding the faces and bodies of other young men. The issue of fighting in Lewiston certainly doesn't create prestiege for the city to have such violence associated with it. There is enough violence on lower Lisbon St to satisfy everyone.
If you want violence, then turn to a Lewiston favorite, hockey. People start early teaching their kids to play hockey and forget just how violent this so called sport really is until they get hurt. All they can think of is living vicariously through their children by building a team that will win a state championship.
Raising a generation of children who know only violence through boxing or hockey will not eliminate the issue of bullying in schools. Can't we begin to understand how these relate to the issues of bullying? Reason says if you look beyond your own desires, you will find what you are truly creating and you may not like it. Bullying must be stopped and mimimizing violence in the general community is the way to take a good first step. Parents Reason hopes you read this with understanding and thought, not a knee jerk reaction to the issue, but one of logic. Can I hope for that from the parents of Lewiston? Reason has doubts.
We see that old feeling of a very very tight division race between the Jets, Miami, and the Patriots with the Bills as the spoilers of the division race. We feel, sadly, that this might be the year that the Jet stomp on everyone. Let's hope not. With regard to Bill B., he does not own the team, but just works for them. If the Kraft's will not put up enough money to keep veterans or buy into free agents, then truly New England is doomed. The Yankees put tons of money into their baseball teams and expect to win every year. If New England expects to win every year, then they too have to let the moths out of the wallet and buy the talent to do the job year after year. Reason knows there is never a guarantee of winning, but we would have something to cheer for on every Sunday afternoon. Remaining competitive is the key. Reason with Me.
It is amazing that people would even rent some place like this to begin with and for $800 a month surely they could have done better finding a place. I understand with several children it may be difficult to find enough bedrooms or someone who is willing to rent to you, but come on now... did they really put any effort into looking for an apt. before they took this one? We have some doubts about that. Common sense says never get involved with doing this in lieu of rent. Those issues always come back to haunt people especially when there is nothing in writing. Demolish the building. Don't blame the city or the hospital or the neighbors. Maintain your property. We Reason this goes for all tax payers and recommend that all renters get for the small fee what is often refered to a renters insurance. It really helps, but no one ever thinks it will be they who are in need. Reason with ME.
Reason says support your local fire fighters and police. They are the backbone of our cities. Overtime is either because of fire fighting or illness. Both jobs are highly stressful, so what can we expect. Those close to retirement may take more sick time as they can not have it transferred to their state retirement fund. The city needs to rethink its close the doors to save money policy as it will only do damage to the taxpayers in the long run with higher insurance costs. If the council made errors, they should admit it and not try to cover it up by passing blame on to the unions. Do you want to run into a burning building or do foot patrol at night on lower Lisbon St? Reason that you get the services you pay for and if you are happy with police and fire, then keep them and pay them accordingly. Reason thinks they need a larger salary not smaller. Reason with ME.
Ahhh Aho administers Auburn and the policeman works for Lewiston, so how are they related? I agree that police and firemen do not earn their just pay for the work they do for the public and the community; but someone has to manage and govern. Everyone is trained for a purpose, this Lewiston policeman was quick to react, thought it through and brought this dangerous felon to jail. Whether it will happen again, who knows maybe the prisoner won't be so lucky next time.
Reason would like to know the assessed value of the property at 100%, the purchase price the present owner paid for it, and the value in todays market if the owner were to resell this property. All these we conclude would figure into the real value. Certainly he is correct when citing that his value should be compared to other similar ones, but are there truly similar ones with all this potential, plus the barn/workshop. We would like to own this property ourselves as we have always wanted a wonderful place for a workshop. Reason, wishes him the best of luck dealing with any local government.
How many of these responders really own property? Do they rent and just don't want to have rent increases? I wonder how many really live in Auburn also. It doesn't count if they live in Lewiston to comment as to do less and keep the taxes down? The SJ needs to filter out the Lew. People when commenting on the Auburn taxes. The real Auburnites want the same services, and if it costs a little more well that is the way it goes. There is no such thing as a zero budget. Things cost more each year. We have to recognize that fact. Zero is a step backward. We live in Auburn and are proud of it. Don't make us a clone of Lewiston, a backward thinking city. Reason that what we need may cost and there is no way to keep things at a lesser level without the city becoming a greatly lesser city.
What is the sense in attending a meeting if one or even two of the city councilors are planning NOT to attend. Really, we elect these people to help run the city. I would be the first to say I understand what an inconvenience it is to go to meeting after meeting, but that should have been understood when they ran for office. If you can not be there, then it makes no sense for those in these wards to come and voice their opinion either pro or con. I have been told that Mr. Aho is a "Yes, Man", but I will wait to find this out in the long run. However, if he stands up to the council, he may lose his job. After all look at what happened to Jim Bennett in Lewiston.
Oh, I hate to compare Auburn to Lewiston. We are a much better city than our neighbors, but if we continue to cut the budgets and not support our schools, roads, etc even though it means a small tax increase we will become a clone of Lewiston. I do not want this.
I/We are willing to pay the tax increase to keep things as they are for now. We, the citizens of Auburn, want our Spring Clean Up and our roads plowed in the winter.
Cuts, perhaps we should cut the salary of the school supt and city manager. These individuals as well as school principals at all levels are paid too much. They are hired on a one year contract in the school dept so pay restructuring is easy. If they don't like the cut, go somewhere else. Good leadership does not always mean that we must pay highly for it. We get good leadership from coaches at all levels and they are not overpaid.
Cuts, you want cuts... try cutting sports...that will bring out a cry of anger. Schools need to be academic first and second, then like the ancient Greeks merge in the physical development. Parents who who are taxpayers, pay just 52 percent of the cost of the schools, and some pay none as they do not own property. These renters believe that they have the same rights as taxpayers because their rent helps pay the taxes. Well, they should know that 52% does not equal 100% control of the schools and or their programs whatever they are. Parents today believe that teachers and everyone in the employment of the city work directly for them. While it is true that everyone should vote, not all people do, Foolish people. Taxes raised by the city are the true test of value of a community. Cuts at the top of Administration will not be missed. We do not advocate cutting any one's job. Just massively reducing the amount of money they are paid. For example, We would propose that no one in the city be paid more than 3 times the average household income. In Lewiston, I believe that is around 24K so the max for city officials, school admin., teachers, etc would be 72K.
People need to know that they can not get rich working for a poor community. Using this porposal, let the Richest Communities pay the larger salaries. This does not directly equate quality to salary.
Reason that you don't always get what you pay for unless it is a measurable amount like sand or salt. Reason that City Councilors need to attend ALL meetings and consider what is best for the city as a whole not to placate a few who expect the same service at no increase(s). It is totally unrealistic to imagine a zero budget without cutbacks. A true Zero budget is adjusted upward based on inflation and negotiated contracts. Reason that Zero does not always equal zero and that Auburn must maintain its' high standard of community.
Reason expects all Councilors to attend ALL Meetings unless they are unwell.
Citizens of Auburn should demand this of any elected official.
Just another example of where the schools are surrogate parents. Worried about a socialist state are you? Reason that parents should teach their children how to behave and not the school system. Bullying has been around since Cain and Able, it won't go away. We can manage it by going back to a system where the families in the neighborhood care and report misdeeds to the parents of children who fail to follow proper behavior. Of course, this requires that the parent do something about such behavior. IF we continue to dump the active role of parenting on the schools, then who is responsible for this move toward a socialist state? You the parents of course. Schools now feed children breakfast and lunch in a large number of families. We have added teaching them how to behave. What will be next? Will we be feeding them their evening meal, providing a place for them to sleep over the course of the week and only visiting their parents on weekends.
Parents demand your rights. Take care of your child. If you are responsible enough to have a child then feed, dress, and teach them how to behave. Do not take the role of dumping a child upon the local government and demanding that they raise them. Be Responsible, or do not reproduce and this creates a vicious circle of dependency and the children grow up to be just like their parents living in subsidized housing and feeding themselves from food stamps and local welfare programs. We, Reason that it is time to break this circle and stand up for your rights and privileges of parenthood. Reason doubts that most will see this point as no one wants to give up free things. Parenting is not free, it is demanding of you. Free food, free money, free rent, free time while your child is in school and doubtless free time after school and many of these parents will NOT help their child with academic questions at home. Parents like these should not be parents. We, Reason this is why our country is declining. Too Liberal and Morally weak.
Humorously or not, if we were all naked, weather permitting, and people had to show their disgusting bodies and there would be a lot more of us losing weight. Perhaps this can lead us all in that direction. If you want to be thin, be naked... Reason laughs ...
I, Reason that those councilors who voted for the continuation should be commended and those who opposed with such short sighted action should be voted out of office, I hope you agree and will remember this at the poles too.
Are the councilors nuts? Although all things cost more each year trying to hold the line is not realistic or practical. We, the Reasons, are willing to pay more taxes if it is a slight increase per thousand evaluation. Less for plowing and snow removal, sand and salt? That just doesn't make sense. In an ideal climate we would have a mild winter each year, but it doesn't happen. If we purchase the same amount of sand and salt, then we will have enough for a really harsh winter if it comes. Minimize plowing and snow removal? We don't live in Florida, this is Maine. Be prepared for the worst not the least. No Spring CleanUp. People have already begun to put out stuff. Seen what junk is put outthere? Many people have no means of hauling stuff to the dump so it fills up houses or apartments. We know people steal the metalthat can be recycled, but you have already made it clear that this is an offense that they will be ticketed and fined because this is city material to be recycled. If you plan on cutting wages or benefits, We expect that the same percentage would happen to the City Manager and all major dept heads as an example to others. Now you will say that these are separate contracts or that you do not wish to lose such a vital person. We say to you that all people are vital and view themselves according to their jobs. Cutting jobs? Well, the same thing applies. Cut from the top down and not from the bottom up. There is more money to be saved at the top anyway. Reason with US. Better a small tax increase than stupid cuts on all fronts.
Typical, isn't it, that the city wants recycling, but when it comes to priorities they keep the money, park trucks, don't pay staff, and discontinue the program for a "year." Can I believe them? In hard economic times, the frills get cut. Technology is the frill in the education budget, can you believe it? So recycling must be the frill in the city side of the budget. I wish that this newspaper would publish on the standard web site the list of the city council agenda items a week before the meeting. Certainly this agenda has more value to the general public than re-reading old editorials. The Sun Journal has done an exceptional and wonderful job enhancing the paper to the esunjournal. Quite a feat and should be commended. There are few that are such an exceptional format. However, those who do NOT chose to subscribe should be able to electronically view the city council agendas and decide it items on this are important enough for them to desire to attend. I, Reason, would have at least written electronically to my council person to express my opinion had I known of this issue. Reason with me that knowledge is power. We must use our power to create the best city in Maine. I do not favor trash bag fees and special fees, but I do think that there are programs in other state and towns in PA. where people fully recycle and the programs works well. We should look at these programs if a change is in the offing. I do not support any recycling ideas presently in place in Maine. Reason with ME.
Can you believe that they are building another UGLY garage in Lewiston? How can they do that and justify the cost and the disfigurement of Lewiston. At least Auburn has an attractive parking garage. Which reminds me that buses linger around garages like they do near the Dingley Building and this centralizes those who need services. Good for that one, but when people protest that they need more ridership routes I wonder about those big foreign built buses which always seem to be empty to me. Wouldn't it be better to have several small van types to transport people and be full or at least seem full to the observer like me. Then and only then could I feel the need to support more routes for these riders. Can anyone believe that they want more when the buses are mostly empty. Garages are bus magnets so this is how we came to this discussion today. Reason with me what is needed here is better management of what we have in Lewiston and not more of what doesn't visibly work.
Tom Hood was always an excellent first grade teacher. There is no shame in rotating him back to the classroom. There is, of cours,e a financial change which would occur for him which would be significant.
I have always felt that any principal should do this to keep abreast of the feelings of staff and students in the classroom. However, what will probably happen is that they will just push Tom to another school. Funny how attached teachers and Principals become to one school if they remain there long enough.
As for the Federal Government programs, all they do is throw money at a problem. This never works.
What they really need to do is take students, regardless of their age, and place them at the appropriate learning level even if it is two or three yrs behind their age group which gives teachers the advantage of dealing with everyone at the same ability level. These students can be cross integrated into activities where their size and age would be an overwhelming advantage to them over younger students. I speak specifically of activities like physical education.
Yes, there will be critics that say you can't do this as it humiliates a child. Honestly, are we more concerned with the sensitivity of the parent/child or the learning that the child can accomplish which will affect their entire life?
If we deny retention, then we must embrace "learning levelization" without fear. Those old enough will remember the dreaded "tracking" system of the 50's and 60's, but they/we did not turn out so badly.
Society must change if education is to advance in this country. The countrys of the world who value and achieve in education have a socially positive view toward it. They do not value sports over education, they value learning over all other things. There is a lesson here to be recognized... either we learn from it or we become the academic slaves to a more dominantly educated society somewhere else in the world.
Remember the world is connected electronically. Finally, I advocate that parents should take away the cell phones and Ipods. Replace them with true learning tools like books, hands on puzzles and acknowledge that it is the "responsibility" of all parents to monitor the computer use of their children.
Society had rights long before parents and their children had rights granted to them by the liberal courts of the 60's. I ask that we rally again as a society and not as individuals to take back the responsibility for educating our children... Reason with me on this.
Too many rights in the world today. When we as children grew up, everyone in the neighborhood watched out for everyone else's kids. Parents were allowed to spank, or appropriately discipline their children. A good physical whack or even the threat of one should be enough to keep a child in good behavior. Take away all the cell phones, over protective parents who insist that their child can do NO Wrong, and tell them about life in the 1950's... most kids today are by my opinion just spoiled rotten. They really don't understand hard work. The Internet didn't exist when we went to school. We had to use books and the dreaded "card catalog" to find what we wanted in a library. Do your kids even know where the building is and do they know that founder of US Steel Dale C. established a trust fund to build libraries because he knew the importance of knowledge in the life of each of us.
Reason that the liberals, and the liberal Supreme Court decisions over the last 60 yrs have sent us all into a period where you can't discipline your own children or at least the most you can do is take away their cell phone. You may not even be able to yell at them as that is considered Verbal Abuse... can you believe it? No hitting, or yelling at your own children and they can take you to court for this.... NO, NO, NO, ... too wrong... and I won't even discuss their rights to speak or write in a language that is just excessively grammatically incorrect. Reason with me, we need to change the laws relating to the family in this country... if we don't what will happen in the next generations? I fear to even imagine.
In this perfect world, we all need a perfect something so it might as well be something that we cannot see or touch. Of course, imagine if the religions of this country had to pay taxes. Many of the churches would have to centralize into one building and share expenses, etc. All Christians worshiping in one building, even at different times. I guess this would lessen the problem that the Catholic Church has with not enough priests. When churches burn, other churches or synagogue's invite those less fortunate to share their building. Why couldn't this be the norm instead of the exception? What if as in the movie "The Shoes of the Fisherman" the Catholic Church sold off it art treasures to help the world by financing the causes it so often promotes instead of collecting from the worshipper who still attend. Imagine further if hospitals and colleges were also taxed. This would be a wonderful thing. Nonprofit hospitals, bull ... Colleges would merely pass part of the expense on to students and stop building, but continue to seek contributions from alumni to assist and off set expenses. Bates, CMMC, St. Mary's and all the local churches and local religious schools SHOULD PAY TAXES, not just a fair share of water and sewer, etc... Add these to the local tax rolls and watch the local taxes go down, property valuations go up, the quality of education in local schools might go up, but just putting money into the problem will not make it better. This is a discussion for another time, however, consider the proposed education reform of this president and then be ready for a heated discussion. I, Reason, that there is no such thing as a tax exempted hospital, church or business. Stand up and demand that the laws covering such an issue be repealed.
All changes are not always good, but no change is worse than any change. Failure to keep up with the times and cost of medical expenses is at the very heart of many issues in America today.
Start somewhere and watch the politicians add riders on to other bills that will amend this one... it will happen.
When workers are healthier, they take less sick time which means more productivity for each company and thus the country. Reducing these sick days will save hundreds of millions in the next decade.
Consider the fact that many people with existing conditions can't get insurance. When they are ill and have maxed out the allowable amount, they must sell their house, etc,.to pay these bills. This is not right.
We would all be healthy if we could be. Certainly no one wants to be sick unless your a hypochondriac.
Reason with me that health care change is a positive thing for all Americans especially our troops.
A discussion begins and it seems good. We need to have this kind of conversation, but be assured that much of what has been said here this morning is correct. Oil from the mid east buys bombs that kill American soldiers and the sooner we can get away from that link the better. Neighbors like their privacy and a windmill falling on top of their house somehow seems to violate this doesn't it. Keep in mind that what electricity that is not used by the consumer can be returned to the electric grid for credit which is a nice benefit. Roland Miller has it right for once. The property setback is important. I will be installing several on my house when they become more efficient and the size is down to that of todays tv dish antenna.
This I reason could be done effectively in all houses at a small size in America. Imagine the savings. A nation of windmills and no oil.... mind blowing... I look forward to living long enough to see it. Reason this with me.
Another ex teacher dies, how many of his students remember him and who says that teaching isn't hazardous as both he and his brother have died, both teachers, and hopefully the stress of the job did not carry beyond the classroom and put them early into their graves. We will never know how many Good men pass quietly into the night, but I will miss them. There is no reason for such men to die so young.
Reason says the first quarter was where any crushing happened. The score was so one sided that it was impossible almost to overcome. They fought bravely and with a great deal of effort the remainder of the game. A public school going against a private all male high school is in and of itself difficult to overcome in any sport. Just the volume and quality of talent a private school has to chose from should be enough to overwhelm all schools every year. Perhaps such private schools should be eliminated from state high school competition and should play in regional or parochial regional tournaments alone. Chevrus might be better served to play catholic schools from Mass and Conn. That could be an interesting tourney. I would wonder how an El and Deering matchup would have ended. Finally, it would be too bad if Chevrus had to give up the recent series of wins because of one player and his eligibility. I am glad to see that the Maine Principal's Association has for once taken the correct course and I reason that they will continue to exert their decision on the court and the family of this one player. What is fair for one is fair for all. Reason that alone with me.
Another great teacher and educator lost. I can only hope that many of his former students will remember him and how high his expectations were for them. He gave a lot and expected a lot. It is too bad that school systems do not reward teachers for their excellence especially when the evaluation system is not tied to any pay raise, etc. Teachers took up the profession because they loved knowledge and loved sharing it. What greater compliment can a teacher get than to be remembered by a student as a great educator, "I learned a lot when I had you as a teacher." Sadly we bid farewell to a generation of teachers who taught because knowledge had to be passed on to the next generation. Who will now pick up the lantern of knowledge? Rest well Al, your students carry forth your passion for knowledge.
I will be anxious to see this on a map. Exact design and the clearness of view on both sides of the "trail" must be extensive to prevent molesters of our children. Plowing is of course another issue as to where to put the snow, etc as the weather deteriorates. Reason with me that this is good news, but design and maining it are now going to fall on the city. It is good that children will be safer we hope on this trail.
If the bank CEO and CFO and COO, are being required to GIVE BACK bonuses and substantial increases, then why shouldn't hospital execs do the same. Just imagine, how silly it is to pay someone to run a hospital when they make 20-30 times the local wage earner salary, and THEN give them a bonus, hidden as a retirement compensation... JUST INSANE. Sure on one wants leadership to be underpaid and the state of the hospitals in Maine to go without good guidance, but this IS MAINE... not New York City or Fairfield Connecticut where people earn salarys in the 7 to 8 figure range... 300-500K even though excessive in Maine should be a legislative limit for the Top Managers. Do they think we are stupid because we live in Maine? The cost of living and food, etc does not justify those salary payments. Perhaps this is where Maine natives need to take charge of Maine businesses. Paul Dionne, just another ex Lewiston Mayor, knows the the ins and outs of Lewiston Politics... yuk. Not much of a recommendation for someone to be on a board of directors. How do you get to be on the board of directors anyway? Politically connected? When will regular people sit on such a board and work in concert with medical staff to run a more honest business. Yes, take a LOT of money from those at the top, if they move, ok, I bet you can find a lot of people who have hospital management skills across the country
candiceanne says
So a question for the Sun Journal is why have you allowed a post and repost totaling 4 times...do you support her point of view or is no one editing this page today... I reason something is wrong.
This is always the same threat regardless of which management team is involved, labor cut your salary or we cut the workforce. For years school systems have said, "Do more with less and now they want the labor force to have fewer days, but they will hold them to the same standards when it comes to test results for the state? Ok, less days, less money for staff, some will be on food stamps, especially the lower paid employees. That is not a saving to the state. The average school district/region in Maine holds classes 175 day of the year. and this reduction is about 2.28 percent of the year. Thus will the state drop its expectations by the same percentage on school test results. Further, school years that go beyond Memorial Day in May have yet to recognize that there is no learning achieved after that point. This amounts to about 10 days yearly or another 5.7 percent yearly. If you started school 10 days earlier in August and ended by Memorial day weekend then you would not need to consider this 5.7 percent. However, the normal school year which would be proposed with 4 days reduced and 10 days lost production amount to a percentage of approx. 8 % ... now ask the state if they would be willing to reduce test scores by 8% on the norm and then come back and ask employees to take a salary reduction. Either way it is NOT GONING To HAPPEN as these people have worked for years to develop their seniority under existing labor contracts and pay scales. Perhaps the school district/region should declare bankruptcy like the auto makers, then the labor contracts would be null and void. Also perhaps the Feds would jump in with money to save them... laugh, laugh... I, Reason, this won't happen.
What do you Reason?
A sad case, but I had wondered from the beginning why this man and his wife had not accepted the initial help after the fire that displaced them. Something seemed wrong. After reading the Sun Journal article, I found it enlightening about this person. It is sad that people put themselves in such despair. How does someone dig themselves out of such a situation? I may sound harsh and without sympathy, but I believe that it is time for this man to move to another city, etc. He can only enrage the local population by staying in Auburn after the article was published yesterday. This is a situation just waiting to explode. It brings to mind that fact that Auburn doesn't have a law against panhandling. Perhaps Auburn should consider one and make it retroactive to prevent this from continuing as a Reasonable choice I hope you will agree with me. City Council action might be called a knee jerk reaction, however, it might also be considered just catching up to the present time. Certainly, I am glad that the Sun Journal published facts and not opinion.
I am going to say it again... clean up main st in lewiston. Stop the traffic flowing left toward the mobil station and blocking through traffic for a length of time. If this turn is important, then create a separate lane to turn left, there is NO right turn at that intersection anyway so no big deal... I doubt that the mobil/big apple station does a lot of business with those who cut across the traffic lane anyway. Be aware improve your city in the best way. Function before aesthetics.
Well, whomever wrote this copy for the SJ must be a high school drop out. You should never end a paragraph the same way. This person did it 4 times in a row. "Chappelle said."
Really, I know that the SJ has better writers than this. Quality folks, and yes, I agree that the video was useless to present.
If you really want to help the city of Lewiston fix the traffic pattern around the city, look no further than Main St. Travel up Main St from Auburn, two lanes, and that is fine... UNTIL some one decides that they need to either turn into the Big Apple/Mobile station by making a left turn from the left lane. Because the traffic is oncoming, they stop, forcing everyone behind them to wait, then as the light turns they zoom into the Mobile Station. This means that the entire traffic flow behind them has waited... until they turn. Why not just move into the other lane around them you ask, because it is full of fast flowing traffic... which is what this lane should be... It was wise to remove an unneeded stop light on Main St, not the city should take it one step further, not allowing either a left or I believe there is a sign for it already in place, a right turn down a one way street from Main.... Please do something about this, I do not live in Lewiston, so the city will not listen to me, but they might listen to you...."the people's voice"
thanks
I agree with momof4 by asking "Why Here?"
Is it because that others are here, the state has a weak record of following up on these guys, food stamps, welfare support of other kinds, or what ... perhaps this would be a good topic for an investigative reporter... Think about it Sun Journal.
Ted was the emotional leader of a great team for years. I hope that he will have a Bruschi while watching the game...he deserves to be applauded for his years of excellent work.
If you are a Patriots fan, you will reason this too.
I think that you will have to go back farther than Jim Bennett to blame your troubles on Martindale. It really all began with a small group of people who yearly brought up the fact that they wanted a new clubhouse at the yearly winter meeting. Finally one year (remember this is in the winter) when the many senior members were far away in FL. they were able to just squeak out a majority and win approval. You had to attend the meeting to vote and that was their advantage. Ok, well the new club house cost...was it one or two million dollars ....who cares... this was the real sink hole of debt and although it looked nice it was almost impossible to pay for it. During this time there was an underhanded movement to reduce the number of older members and get those young turks out there playing and socializing so they could develop greater community diversity. Well, someone forgot that the older group had for years been the most stable group. If Martindale really wants to change, then there are things it must do internally. Most obviously it needs to eliminate so many in house tournaments. Minimize tee times, limit them to just the weekends and maybe Friday afternoon. Allow the public to play without restriction or tee times the remaining days of the week. Many many people enjoy just driving up to a nice club and getting out and off the first tee without being pressured to hurry. A course for the people is what is needed and not a course for the elitist members. I applaud the fact that the receptions, dinners, social events make money for the club and that people like to recommend it for usage. Reason says "A balance must be struck and presently the Members have too much control of the course during all days of the week. Leagues are competitive, but Martindale has too many of these too. As I said limit members, leagues, and tee times to Fri, Sat and Sunday for Members and invite the public or members for non tee times the rest of the week." Enough Said, but blame the right people.
The fact that the school committees through out the state have the final control on all financial items by law is usually what causes local problems....they make a take it or leave it offer and if it is too drastic then the teachers or police or firemen leave it. There is NO binding arbitration on financial matters, but there should be. This would give both sides a chance to work together to resolve these matters. However, remember one thing and that is that the process of negotiations is NOT A FAIR and BALANCED process as we would think. Offers are made from strength and unions can either accept them or not, if not they have to try to force the school committee and the public to realize their issue which is not one of greed, but of fair play. This can not be done until all options in the negotiation process have been used. This is why the city has taken so long. They do not wish anyone to know what is happening. Just like those awful issues of "PERSONNEL" matters which happen behind closed doors, they take negotiations even in its final stages behind the same closed doors. I say let the teachers strike, just dock them their daily pay for every day they don't work. The public hates to have their kids at home during the fall, winter and spring, so it shouldn't take long for a resolution. Just for you information, Teachers can strike, but not in Maine, ask people in Pennsylvania about teachers strikes. Reason says work together and do what is fair, but he knows that won't happen as someone has to prove they are the tough guy on the education block.

Cheers to the Sun Journal. Good unbias reporting. People wonder why the City of Lewiston is such a terrible place to do business or to work for no matter what department you are in. Well, now we know. Politics, deep back door rooted politics. It is too bad that this is even evident in the "Personnel" matters which they say they can not discuss and all action takes place behind closed doors. This Personnel matter issue has for years been used as a cover up to remove people that do not follow the pattern which is set by all depts, independence is dead and I guess that particularly goes for education which has both State and Local mandates for its teachers to follow an exacting curriculum for at least half a day. I remember when the guidelines were simple. Ask each child to do their best, use the same books for all except special needs children, and teach effectively, now it seems that all it is remains test, teach, retest, etc... creativity is stifled and good teachers just wait for enough years to retire...leaving the instruction of the young to the inexperienced and easily lead beginning teachers. Reason says that it is time to go back to the schools of 30 yrs ago and try to maintain a clean council in the present. Boy, it should be manditory for all council members to take an ethics course for a week before they take the oath of office. Just read this article and I think you will agree. School starts soon, best of luck to the new teachers and students starting school.
It is always about money. They could not force these teachers to take a lower salary, but in forcing them out they can hire someone at half or two thirds the salary. Reason says that "Cut one at the top yields two at the bottom of the pay scale. I hope you agree that this is unfair, but realize that when you go to work for a private organization like a church school there are no unions to protect you or negotiate for layoff procedures. I sympathize with Ms. Lawyer, but this was her choice to work for a Catholic school. She would have been better served to apply to the public sector. Perhaps it is not too late even now for her to do that and she would unfortunately be at the bottom of any force reduction starting all over again in the public sector. Sad, but true. Reason says that all school systems would do this if they could get away with it...Be glad teachers of Lewiston and Auburn that you have your union to protect you.
Blame the former Lewiston City Manager if you will, but the rational is that he only advises the City Council and "THEY" must make the decisions to buy, not buy, renovate, etc. I, Reason, believe that Mr. Bennett was in many cases used as a Scape Goat for political policies and city financial errors. The "Arena" has always been an issue and with a city which thinks that HOCKEY is almighty, of course, you want to save it as it is the "Will" of a strong and outspoken "Minority." He was correct when he advised the City Counselor of the inappropriateness of his presence at a meeting. He did it in a professional manner and for that professional issue there seems to have brewed a real hatred by the city counselor, and I for one am glad that the election is close at hand because there are several city counselors who need replacing. I can only hope that someone more educated and less sensitive will run to replace those who voted Mr. Bennett out. If the citizens of Lewiston want better government, then they have to participate in it. I, Reason, that there is no other way.
Reason with me on this: how about watching tv commercials that advertise food and how good it is, everything from Mickey D's to Seafood Houses, Steak Houses, etc... Do we think that we are being seduced by television to think "FOOD" and eat our way to being Fat... after all the winters in Maine are long too so when we are house bound we are subjected to more and more media telling us just how good this or that is...Think then Reason with me that you should try to do something else than watch tv...have you ever noticed that all commercials seem to run at the same time too? You can not avoid the input... or perhaps you can if you just rent DVD's and watch only the News... but isn't that prime time for folks to eat as well... the plan is Subliminal. Reason says pay attention to the plan.

Great Job
Compliments to the fire dept and their rescue squad. Things like this want our support more and more and believe me they deserve it.
Well done, thanks for saving another friend of man.
SAD
that we have so many students that don't fit in to the school program during the day. I wonder how many of those who are in the in school suspension programs are minorities frustrated by our language or way of life? Could Supt. Webster provide the sun journal with that kind of data for publication. I would find it interesting to know.
Party
Let's not forget that Angus was a Democrat before he decided to be an Independent even back in the days of being a good ole Governor.
Best of Luck
to whomever decides to run against Olympia Snowe for the US Senate.
She will get 80% of the vote again...wait and see.
Oh
What surprise... did we think anything other than backing Obama would happen? Of course this party supports the incumbent President.
retro active
Let's hope that the new bill becomes law and as part of it there is a retroactive clause that goes back at least 5 yrs from the date it passes and becomes law.
It is obscene to see that this guy can collect that much money while he is in jail. At the least, his pension should be deminished by the cost of his incarceration per year... and at the maximum the whole pension should be forfeit, but we don't want him to get out of jail and become another welfare case, so perhaps we ought to leave him a percentage that becomes active when he gets out so he can have something to live on besides the welfare system.
Personal Learning Plans
The philosophy is nice, but do they realize what amount of time it takes to develop this plan? Then what about the realization on maintance of the plan? Is this going to be done by the teacher? When will teachers really teach? Take 25 students and create plans for each one. Sounds great, but the time involved, and time to adjust each must happen..what daily, weekly, monthly? Should one teacher be doing it or should it be evaluated and done by all the teachers at the same grade level? A lot of questions to be answered before beginning this process. Even Auburn with the computers (IPads) will have difficulty with individual plans. Subliminal learners ...aren't we all as we sit in front of the computer screens or tvs?
surprised
Better
I think that they did better on Winter St this last storm, as it seems to me that they went up and then came back down and then entered into Pettingill Park... I hope this will continue and I hope that we were one of those tweeks.
Remember
Germany prior to the second world war, such patients were euthanized because they were such a drain on the state economy. Personally, I believe that if I were in a similar situation I would want to be put out of my misery and yes I know there are religious and moral issues, but carrying this forward and look at the cost and if the cost were zero then the idea is sound, practically, probably not however, a solution needs to be found and this is one way to do it.
Schools
are publically funded wings of the community.
Business Attitude
NEVER LET ONE MAN HAVE TOO MUCH POWER!
remember
Remember that the debt to hospitals, and it got bigger and bigger.
People lost their medically related jobs because of the enormous debt.
We can not tolerate people losing jobs because of state reimbusements are too low or to late.
Support you local hospitals wherever you are in the state, the job cut could be yours. Services cut could be the ones you need. Defend your right to have good medical care.
Maine can attract businesses and people by showing that it care about and for its population.
Eyes open folks.
yes
Learning
For years schools have talked about individualized learning, well maybe it is here via technology, but other skills like gym, playing together, etc. cannot be individualized... we have to learn to accept the diversity of others, oh God, I sound liberal..
Changes
Large Super Market sounds like a good idea
Norm Bissonnette
bet he did not espouse that value around election time did he?
Should never tell seniors to go to H..L as they have too many relatives in the area. Sounds like a good plan for the city, but
should the k of c hall be considered for other city needs? In time there probably will be a need for something on that street.
Meeting
bet they did not meet today due to weather.
The Park
Every year, I complain about the Park getting plowed before the upper end of Winter St. I can explain that when the plow turns the cornor to plow up toward the end of winter st, it breaks off and goes down into the park, then returns later in the day to do above the entrance to the park.
My problem is if there are no activities scheduled for the park or hockey rink because of the weather, then why should they have priority over TAXPAYERS. Please plow from 132 Winter St to the end and then back down into the park before anything else. It is important to us that we get the services that we pay for... huh... regardless of the priority listings.
Resistance
LOL
The fifty percent rule
Republicans
are only vulnerable in this state do to the fact that the supposed head of the state party in Paul LePage... there could not be a worse image for any Republican to hold up and say "I follow his lead", instead they should follow Sen.
Change
It might be more interesting to change the City Charter and give the Mayor a VOTE so that he/she can be more responsive to the people and follow through on what he/she would like to see done. It might be a good thing. Regarding the Mayor vs. the City Manager, if you check the background of these people you will find that the Manager is better trained in the overview of all depts and collecting data, then reporting his finding to the council for their approval. The two jobs really are different and should not be combined ever.
Good for You
This has to be less stressful than cardiac care, and personally I think you probably find it more rewarding. Good Luck to you and your pets..may you find all those lost souls looking for their owners.
Good People
Yes, Alice there are good people out there despite the bad ones. There are many more good ones, but not all are in a place to give as the economy is so tight. If you can afford it, please continue to help this couple out with donations. I plan to do so.
contact
What is the paypal contact address or how do I procede to donate to them via paypal?
Dead
I guess this means that the project envisioned for the casino near the parking garage is partially dead as it had included a hotel. Didn't these folks want to build a hotel near the falls on the other side of the bridge before?
looking for
A 5 set of stackable barrister bookcase(s)which would also be in a dark color if possible, yes we know that there are some out there for $750 and up, but we are looking for something in the $400 range or maybe a bit more. If anyone reads this article and has one to sell that you think I would like please respond here and I will try to get your contact info from either bag lady or shopping siren. Thanks.
If you email baglady, then she will let me know who has what and at what price, or at least I hope so... happy holiday shopping to all.
girl working at Scarborough Wal Mart
I hope you all have looked for and found the article in which this college student tells of her first hand experiences at Wal Mart and how people paid for items with welfare and food stamps ... this is a viral You Tube and should be fairly easy to find if you look for it. Viral means wide spread but not a virus containing item.
Please read this and forward it to all the state legislative branches and members before they make any cuts in the welfare program as well as the Director of DHHS and
The Governor of Maine. Thank you and let’s not let all those drastic cuts happen.

Please understand
I am not attacking the man, but the political process that uses his passing as a tool for the Democratic Party.
I never knew this gentlemen
but it seems to me that the timing and the comment about "His dream for many years was to serve as mayor of the city.
A surprise
the death of the democratic candidate was quite a surprise yesterday.
Absentee Ballots
are absentee ballots available for the run off election and if so where can people obtain them?
Same Old Song
You can see by the comments how much the Democrats fear a Republican in the Mayor's Office.
polling place
Disappointed
I did not see my suggestion about turning it into a High School and putting EL in there.
Bob
I live in Auburn so I can't vote for you, but you have my emotional support after all the years of legal discussions we had at McMahon School in Lewiston. Best of Luck
WELL
Doesn't anyone read this paper?
Would like to see
I would like to see ALL comments offered here under add a comment.
I think it would be fun and informative to know what local people think. Hope you will do it. Thanks
I hope MRS HAYES reads this
Certainly a NEW HS is needed and spending money to renovate the old one is like pouring it down the drain, but if it is only a stop gap measure then perhaps it is worth while in the short term.
I Would like a job
either full or part time. Thank you.
Mill Thoughts
Have you ever seen
Served with HONOR
although not appreciated at that time, we all recognize that soldiers must do their duty whether they like it or not. I am proud of these guys and wish that I could have joined them, although I know that just the thought of going over there scared me to death. Let us all salute and pledge to assist these soldiers for as long as they live. They deserve every honor we can give.
web site
Can someone list the web site with articles like this please so we may check them at our liesure?
Great
we all should honor the Vets whom ever and where ever they are. A vet that is NOT supported by outreach systems, etc becrys the shame of our society today. Let us all be thankful that we have freedoms to be thankful for because of these brave men.
Congratulations
Bob,
I know you will do a great job and I only wish I could have voted for you after all the years we worked together in Lewiston. You were more than fair and an honest, reasonible Supt. Your addition will be an asset to the community at large. Best Wishes
PJB
60 something ?
Can you trust a person who won't give their exact age?
She has been on the board long enough and I feel it is time for a change. Hopefully in a positive direction.
Did she
grow up in Lewiston and go to McMahon Elem. School?
Vote
Listen and vote for the at large candidates who will NOT rehire the former city manager. Thank is my opinion. I know that the incumbent will not rehire him, but which one of the others feels the same way?
Vote for Connors
I urge everyone to vote for Robert Connors. I was employed for 30+ years by the Lewiston School Dept. and I learned a lot from watching and listening to him even though we often disagreed. Regretfully I can not vote for him as I live in Auburn. However, I urge you to Vote Connors for the knowledge he brings to the position. Thank you. PJB
What I meant
was to say "What are the demographics of the Lewiston Middle School?"
Minorities
How many kids at the middle school level are minority groups?
I understand ALL groups at this age behave terribly. Can't something
be done about their behavior after school and on the streets as well?
Ex Manager for the City
I would really like to know how each of the candidates feels about rehiring the ex city manager. Thank you.
It is understood that the incumbents voted him out, but what about the others?
When
will the public get a chance to view this expansion at an open house or some such for the ex students or ex teachers?
Yes
Letters of criticism should be discussed in executive session, but if the council feels that it is appropriate (majority vote) to read them aloud in public session then it should be done as the community NEEDS to know what is happening behind closed doors and the city manager is an employee who not only needs to be accountable to the council, but also to the majority of the public. If the public is NOT informed, how can they judge whether or not these letters are just hate mail or honest fact. Please give them more consideration then a quick dismissal.
Good Ideas
Pettingill is a great solution. Thank you Tina.
Pettingill
Yes, that could be an answer for Pre K instead of the multipurpose center and safety as well as parking are there ... good thinking Tina. We better jump on the idea before they take it down though.
Heating
It just isn't finding a space. It is finding the funds to heat the space during the Spring, Fall, and Winter months. If the school dept. allows seniors to use Pettingill School, then they have to add heating into their budget. What is needed is a relatively small space that is centrally located with some parking and heats well. If anyone knows of such a space please comment here. THank you
Typical
This is so typical of the attitude of the residents of the city of Lewiston. "I want it my way or I will throw a fit." Can you imagine the poor teachers who have to work for a person like her? Mr. Handy followed correct procedure. Perhaps just reading back the minutes to her would have satisfied her. Does the committee have a secretary to take minutes though? Perhaps she should have taken better notes herself? What was her question by the way and if Gus B. had already answered it then what was the answer? Lewiston, government at its lowest point of function.
Average
looks to me like Auburn did an over all average job if you look at the last scores and compare them to the state.
Wait and see the results
before you decide that this was another experiment gone too fast into the future as Auburn sometimes does. Results and the joy of learning cannot be measured by a simple price tag.
I urge all citizens to give it time, even if it takes two years or more. Remember each child learns at a different rate and some are ready when others are not... a large group picture is most objective.
Good Luck.
Needed
Elementary schools have needed medical coverage for years. School nurses in my day were stretched between two or three schools and that always meant they were not usually somewhere when an accident occurred. This left the medical work to either the principal or a competent clerical person. Thank God for these people. They comforted many teary eyed youths in their moment of need. At the end of the year, school nurses were responsible for updating each child's school health record. This meant paperwork between 750 and 1000 student records. Too much for any one person to take on. Exactly how is medical coverage done in elementary schools for next year?
Again
I will ask again. Does the parent or the school system have to provide transportation if they wish to move their child to a new school?
yes,
I said all that and I would always want someone who represents me to be knowledgeable about all areas especially those involving city personnel.
Background
I have never heard exactly what Belinda's previous experience is and how she obtained it. Someone I know told me that she has never worked and if that is true I would think that would taint how she would view the negotiations between the city and its police, fire fighters and teachers.
Can someone fill me in and I know that I would like to see it here in writing. Thank you.
Weather
I note that a couple of Maine events have in recent years changed the weeks or weekends which they were held because of the constant bad weather year after year. Perhaps looking back and trying to find a good week of weather or one when these balloons were NOT committed to flying somewhere else would be a good idea.
We laugh almost every year when Smokey's Great Show comes to Auburn and expect it to rain 80% of the time. They must get discouraged too.
L/A check weather history and find a different weekend.
Crazy
this shows how crazy the state and government itself can be without even allowing Mr.
Burton, you will need it dealing with these guys.
spelling
Farwell School not Farewell school unless there is another that I am
not aware of which there could be. However, elementary school is where you master spelling. Please add Farwell to you spelling checker.
Repairs
Does anyone know where you can get shoes repaired? It seems years ago that several small shops existed in cellars on many Lewiston blocks. Today I can't find one to even fix a belt or a shoe, etc. Please respond if you know of anyplace in Lewiston, Auburn, or the surrounding area where shoes are repaired.
Special Education Funds
are reimbursed by the Federal government as I recall, but the amount is based on the previous years local budget expenditures and not on the present year.
Teaching
is a profession where the teacher need to set high standards, but the state and federal government should stay out of the process.
Why Should
any one use this section of road unless they are desperate for a better and quicker connection under the present conditions.
Thank you.
I remember the song
do you? Joannie Mitchell wrote "They Paved over paradise and made it a parking lot."
Some things never change, do they.
Hope the kid
Best of luck to the father and son.
This is a misconception of doing the right thing
Ms Gerry
Please have someone bring your petitions by my home on Winter St.
I was critical of you before we had a long and wonderful phone conversation.
You are the first local politician to call me instead of the other way around. Your expressions showed thought and character.
The city would be at a loss without you on the council in some form. I await the petitions and I know you know how to get in touch with me.
I wish you the best of luck in the upcoming election.
Old News
The complaints will eventually calm down by the following year.
good luck Mo
You have survived many changes in education and I do mean many!
Anyone who can do that deserves a long and pleasant retirement.
How many people ever knew your husband was a Registered Maine Guide while he worked in education at the high school?
We note that your daughter is doing well and expect that she will continue the family tradition in sports and education.
Council
Figures
Just get a new toy and someone damages it. Adults are just big kids.
pictures
What no pictures?
Recharged
I am sure that just leaving Lewiston and the related stress is enough to re-energize ANYONE. He is an excellent politician and I have long expected him to be appointed a commissioner of education or serve in an executive capacity in state government somewhere. Although we did not always agree, I knew that he did what he felt he had to according to the events. Best of luck.
Great
When I was told that they were closing for remodeling, I originally thought that they meant the interior only.... then WOW, most of the old building is gone. I will be anxious for my first burger from the to see if it is as good as the old ones or better. Best of Luck.
Fuss
One man in both cities causing such a fuss. Does he pay taxes in both and where does he legally reside? That city is where he should take his comments to and not someplace else unless he owns property in the other.
Does anyone know where he lives/how much property if any in the other city? I feel that only taxpayers or impacted residents of a city should be allowed to speak at council meetings. It is NOT a forum for political outcry against a government or the dealing of a national government.
Oh, renters who are not property owners should also be allowed to comment during an open session in the city that they live in
Older Riders
Oh, what happened to the pictures of older riders? Were there any?
Was it split up into age groups like the Boston Marathon? I would like to know.
Money
Must be really in need of money. How much can you get from Sam's and does that person realize that the crime is going to get them a long sentence because of what they said ... I doubt it, don't you?
Back
Would like to see that building that has been in the way for years moved back much farther so that this lane could start right from the bridge. I believe it says WILLIS on the building. If it were a regular residence the city would have taken it by eminent domain by now...so if you're doing something why not do it correctly.
Tunnel Vision
Hockey Blind
What Works
charter schools probably work best in very large cities like New York.
A job
Consider This
Your seeking to prepare students for what in your opinion is an unsure future.
Great People
I have known these people for a very long time and I have nothing but good things to say about them.
Wanted
Did they really want food instead of money? Perhaps that would have been better as they could have eaten the evidence... huh?
Welcome
We welcome good people to Auburn. The trashy people can stay where they are. Maine is a welfare state and many move here for that also others came because the Catholic Charities of Maine brought them here... thank you very much CCofM... you should have to pay for their welfare, rent, food, etc. not the state taxpayer.
Oh well
I cheer on the Celtics, but as I said the other day I believed at this moment the heat were the better team.
Let's hope that they go all the way which will minimize the issue of losing. When you lose to a champion, then you don't feel as bad as when you lose to a runner up....Have a restful summer, good drafts and a better year next year.
No
I say NO to this technique for riding the lake of Geese.
Reason must prevail.
video
As a gun owner, trained and certified to carry; I know this will stir- up the "Outlaw all guns group." This represents a migrant "visitor" that could care less about laws and or gun safety.
I applaud the Lewiston Police on their handling of this incident in a prompt and professional manner, despite the neighborhood and audience. The end of the video depicts the true mentality of the young bystanders. Respect for authority seems to be a joke to them, and apparently they do not care who knows this.
Good job LPD, from an Auburn respectful citizen.
Dumb
but understandable as public broadcasting is a very liberal medium and the Gov. is very conservative. Beware when all you hear is one song of knowledge and justice in the world.
wonderful
This is such a wonderful thing that is done for many of the need in our community. High Praise should be given to these dental practices for their work year after year. When will other practices begin to follow their example? We know that it will be difficult for them to see all the needy people. If others could other it later in the year wouldn't it be wonderful!
Next Change
will be to find a new assistant for McMahon Elementary school.
Better
than the Lakers, regardless of the final outcome. The Lakers were embarrassed in that last game especially and Boston has made it a contest in most games.
However, I believe that the inevitable final put Dallas against the Heat and that should be well worth my time to watch the entire game, not just the highlights. Best of Luck Boston!
Appropriate
this seems very appropriate to have the Sheriff's Dept move into the former police building. Let's hope that happens. It would get them out of that old decrepit-ed building and into something better. This would benefit the city and the county in the long run.
Wonderful Things
come out of tragedy don't they. I hope we will all check out these puppies and those of us who can will give them the home and love they deserve. Certainly they give us plenty of love regardless and we all can use plenty of that in today's world.
Registration
Times Change
LANGUAGE WORRIES?
Me Too
Is it just MC? I recently had an issue with my MC and fortunately it was picked up by the MC Paypal Fraud Acct. people. As it was not tied to my business, I was able to have all charges dismissed. I believe that these charges were linked to an expense I was supposed to have made in Africa. Oh boy, as if there were not enough reasons to stay away from Africa. Now I have another.
Increase
They get an increase when people are out of work and inflation is zero?
That doesn't seem right.
Finally
I hope so.
Agree
couldn't agree more that politicians should be working with business to keep the price of K-1, gas, etc down as we know these giant companies make billions of dollars in profits each year. I am not against someone making a profit, but the point is those who are on fixed incomes are hurt by the kind of increases mentioned here. I support the open door policy of businesses telling us what kind of price markup they paid and what we are paying them.
Map
Has anyone seen a map of the routes that the plows take during phase one and two, and of course phase three and four in Auburn. Please publish this as my section of the street is sometimes overlooked and plows go into Pett. Park instead of going up and down the length of Winter St first. What prompts the plow to do this? Certainly the park doesn't pay taxes. We do. So no one should be going into the park in the middle of the storm anyway. Do the taxpayers a favor and plow us first and last...We do not like being forgotten... I await a view of the MAP.
towing
How much does it cost someone in Auburn when they tow your vehicle and where do the put the towed vehicles.
Combine
Is it possible to combine the CLT with the often spoken of Franco American Center?
Certainly the distance between the two is relatively short, just across a bridge, but one
must wonder "How wide is the river?" IS it the same divide that keeps all Auburn and Lewiston
departments from joining and saving the taxpayer money. Reason wants to know if this is a good idea and when can it begin.
Season's Joke
Renee' Bernier cutting a benefit for her father. Chances are better at winning the lottery. Even back when she was on the school committee, she used to look at him as how to vote. Daddy's little girl will not cause problems for him. Reason this out.
New
When will we learn that you just can't throw money at a problem and expect it to be fixed!
Consider!
students
One More
Reason knows this one just replaces a similar one at the same location, however, just how many restaurants can A/L support.
Forgiveness and Repayment
So what is the forgiveness rate on this amount as it wasn't stated, I am sure that people would really like to know.
wow
Welcome
The Bedard family and its now 3 generations of pharmacists are a welcome addition to Auburn. Anyone who has tried to visit their site on Lisbon St knows how difficult the parking in that area can be and how dangerous it is to leave the parking lot. A great family, a great business reputation and helpful staff. Auburn is lucky to get such a business for this property and Reason hopes that we will all benefit and enjoy the relationship.
Again, Welcome Bedards and your company.
plowing needs to consider citizens
The city needs to have a truck come up Winter St all the way before it circles back down into the park to plow. We pay taxes and expect services. Oh, I have been told that these are parks and rec. trucks, but they are NOT. The size and color are all wrong.
Please plow up and down our street, then come back around and go down into the park and do what is needed.
Citizens who pay taxes, need services first, not the park and rec dept. as they are already part of the city...
Did you HEAR this Mr. Belz....?
best wishes
once a mcmahon student always one, enjoy life as it is too short. Your fifth grade teacher, Mr B.
All American City???
Don't Blame
Not as well planned as proposed
Good For YOU
Great and keep up the effort. It will pay off in dollars as you get more and more education regardless of how old you are. Never stop learning...It is an honor to see you at this point in life and you have so much more to learn... go forward, live, love, and learn.
These are great Reasons.
Money
Check into this Senator Snowe.... thank you.
Is it covered?
by insurance or by local tax payers?
Run
ALIEN LIFE FORM and certainly ugly....Reason wonders why this even gets into the news...don't you?
Map
Can we get a computer download and print out showing * of where these individuals live so that it is possible to avoid those areas entirely... Please show compassion and help us to prevent any conflicts ... avoid the problems, not confront them... Reason knows this is the best way. Posting it via an editorial or new item would be very helpful. Thanks
Move
Finally a smart move on the part of the city council...status quo... hurray for common sense. We Reason this is a vote for the people and should remain this way forever.
Sad
sad that we are encroaching on the wildlife, or as Joanie Mitchell put it "paved over paradise and made it a parking lot." With the bank and more people in this area, We are sure that there will be more sightings and fox deaths... too bad...
Agree
Leave things alone, they work fine. Belinda is correct. THE WORSE PLACE would be city hall and its parking garage. It is a poor choice when the city wanted to vote on one item in the past and would be a worse choice with all districts moving into that area. Perhaps the high school gym if enough parking is available in the lower area and the field is made available. As the gym is one of the few buildings up there that might not fall in on you while you're voting...LOL. We however feel that walking to polling places is as important to citizens as the second amendment is to bear arms. WOW, nice comparison even if I do say so myself. Reason with me.
Getting Rid of Unions
Pirate,
If you ever worked for a group like a school system, you would know that if you did not agree with the "Master Plan" for the system wide education, then you could be fired if there were not unions.

Thank you "T"
for your thoughtful comments, they are refreshing... well done.
Good Idea

Shopping Ladies
Guess you stayed to the right side of the store huh. If you had mozied over to the left side you would have encountered a wonderful and large selection of fire arms. Yes, they do buy and sell at very competitive prices. Protect yourselves ladies. Learn to shoot or at least wave it in the air and yell "Yippie" when you find a bargain worthwhile. Remember no shooting in the store...LOL
Take it from the TOP
Former
Agreed
Reason agrees with Low Turnout from 123abc
ALERT
REASON WITH ME>>>>

we wonder if he belongs to a woodworking site called LJ and if so what his used name is.. Thank you.
Congratulations
Time and effort have paid off for you. We applaud your achievement and understand how hard and time consuming it must have been from our own experiences.
Go forward and walk proudly, you have taken the hardest steps already and the most difficult one was the first one wasn't it?
Reason urges you to continue your education almost immediately as once you become comfortable with a new job, etc it will be hard to break that cycle and get back to learning more which in turn earns you more...PLEASE keep up the good work. Reason applauds you.
Violence
About Time
Reason told you that fighting was an adult form of bullying and should be discouraged. Now Sr. wants to bring the dead issue claiming foul... ha ha, if he had really been interested in fighting he would have known about these issues and opposed them with the rest of his family members by his side.
Best of Luck, Sr.
nudity
Reason thinks you should believe this for it is true.
any teacher
retired teacher should enjoy her retirement and not go back or volunteer.
Praise
Why should any of us ever work?
naive
Obviously she was not turned
Reason urges educators to stand up and revolt against this liberal tyrany from the feds, state and local systems, yet we wonder could it be all tied to the feds and state payments to the local school system that makes the changes in education whether they are right or wrong.
convenient
Convenient to be out of the country and out of touch, if you can believe being out of touch in today's world. Ha Ha.
oops
we meant where to go, not where to do
Oh
Reason thought it was Paul Amnott or is that someone else? Also we agree with Mr. Handy, you should tell those drivers where to do, but it's not a lane! SO Reason agrees with the safety issues for Lewiston HS, now that is a change.
lose, lose, lose
Reason believes this is a lose, lose, lose situation. It was not his fault that his mother did that to him and his daughter should have known better unless she thinks she can still sue someone. There is no money left in the class action suit. Maybe she should be in that institution, obviously she is not too smart.
Election
Think about this
Ok, What are the response times for the police if they are based on Minot Ave?
NEXT
Fiasco
Congratulations
I can't believe that two boys in the same room had perfect 4.0 averages.
Let's all give them a big cheer and wish them well in the future.
They are correct when they talk about surrounding yourself with the right people.
Reason wishes them and all other high achieving students well in the future. It remains a bright future for all of them.
That Old Feelling
Great
Great day for a great cause
Bravery
A brave act to give up your daughter for the good of others and a wise choice
Amazing
Reason with ME.
thiefs
Again, they will take anything won't they.
Why
Aho is City Admin of Auburn....
Good job officer Higgins!
Unknown
Reason would like to know the assessed value of the property at 100%, the purchase price the present owner paid for it, and the value in todays market if the owner were to resell this property. All these we conclude would figure into the real value. Certainly he is correct when citing that his value should be compared to other similar ones, but are there truly similar ones with all this potential, plus the barn/workshop. We would like to own this property ourselves as we have always wanted a wonderful place for a workshop. Reason, wishes him the best of luck dealing with any local government.
How Many
How many of these responders really own property?
What is the sense?
Just another
Just another example of where the schools are surrogate parents.
What do you reason?
The Human Body
Humorously or not, if we were all naked, weather permitting, and people had to show their disgusting bodies and there would be a lot more of us losing weight. Perhaps this can lead us all in that direction. If you want to be thin, be naked... Reason laughs ...
Thank You
I, Reason that those councilors who voted for the continuation should be commended and those who opposed with such short sighted action should be voted out of office, I hope you agree and will remember this at the poles too.
What?
Better a small tax increase than stupid cuts on all fronts.
typical
Reason with ME.
fUN TOWN
Well, if you mean bars and hookers, then you got it right.
Can you believe iT?
Reason with me what is needed here is better management of what we have in Lewiston and not more of what doesn't visibly work.
improvement
A much needed improvement, but can you also fix the road to Shaws? It is extremely full of pot holes.
Maine Law should allow for
Maine Law should allow for Charter Schools
Tom Hood
Rights
I fear to even imagine.
perfect
Changes
A Discussion Begins
Another ex teacher dies, how
Another ex teacher dies, how many of his students remember him and who says that teaching isn't hazardous as both he and his brother have died, both teachers, and hopefully the stress of the job did not carry beyond the classroom and put them early into their graves. We will never know how many Good men pass quietly into the night, but I will miss them. There is no reason for such men to die so young.
Reason says the first quarter
Would someone please tell me
Would someone please tell me the day, place and time of the Class A finals?
Another great teacher and
Another great teacher and educator lost.
Ok, good...when is the next
Ok, good...when is the next game and who is it against?
I will be anxious to see this
I will be anxious to see this on a map.
If the bank CEO and CFO and
If the bank CEO and CFO and COO, are being required to GIVE BACK bonuses and substantial increases, then why shouldn't hospital execs do the same.
Happy Valentines Day...

So a question for the Sun Journal is why have you allowed a post and repost totaling 4 times...do you support her point of view or is no one editing this page today... I reason something is wrong.
This is always the same
This is always the same threat regardless of which management team is involved, labor cut your salary or we cut the workforce.
A sad case, but I had
I am going to say it
I am going to say it again... clean up main st in lewiston.
Well, whomever wrote this
Well, whomever wrote this copy for the SJ must be a high school drop out. You should never end a paragraph the same way. This person did it 4 times in a row. "Chappelle said."
Really, I know that the SJ has better writers than this. Quality folks, and yes, I agree that the video was useless to present.
If you really want to help
Please do something about this, I do not live in Lewiston, so the city will not listen to me, but they might listen to you...."the people's voice"
thanks

I think that you will have
I think that you will have to go back farther than Jim Bennett to blame your troubles on Martindale.
The fact that the school

It was a very sad thing to
It was a very sad thing to lose Tom Rowe so early in his life.
Enough said.
It is always about money.
Blame the former Lewiston
Ok, so where is the picture?

Reason with me on this: how
Reason with me on this: how about watching tv commercials that advertise food and how good it is, everything from Mickey D's to Seafood Houses, Steak Houses, etc...
Congratulations to all
