Drive Thru restaurant
Well, after all, it is a drive thru isn't it?
Lewiston Drum Group
This was a very interesting article and articulately written. I never knew that this sort of group in Lewiston-Auburn even existed, let alone Maine. Reading it reminded me of my stay in the orient where I witnessed Buddhists using drums similarly to communicate with their gods.
Another restaurant?
Well...yes it is "new" to us in the sense that we've never had a restaurant in the L/A area that is a mix of Arab, Greek and Western cuisine...and replete with belly dancers no less! However, I'm not a big fan of more restaurants in the area, regardless of the cuisine. We have far too many restaurants in the L/A area. We need to move to a production-oriented society again, as in the days of Industrialization. That's more important to a community in this dire economic state that's struggling with finding and keeping jobs than a restaurant that might perhaps hire 6-12 people for their staff. L/A needs to create jobs that hire huge clusters of people, perhaps 300 to 600, or more, and bring in the companies that actually manufacture things. It sounds insensitive to not welcome this "new" restaurant into the community, but I'd really rather see a job come in that uses more of a sizable work force, actually makes something, and ships it out of state or out of country for profit. That's my take on it and I'm sticking to it.
Purse snatcher
What a despicable thing to do, especially during Christmas! The camera image is not the best but in my opinion is still clear enough to identify this perpetrator. Somebody in the community (an area encompassing roughly only 70,000 people) must surely know this person. They're just not coming forward to identify him.
Poland Five Corners
I would like to see a roundabout installed at Five Corners. Roundabouts have been proven to slow down traffic, move traffic more smoothly, and save lives. There should also be speed signs, slowing traffic down perhaps a mile before the casino site on both northbound and southbound lanes. As it stands now Five Corners is an accident waiting to happen.
Green Christmas
I spent three years of celebrating Christmas in Guam, and those of you are geographically literate know that it never snows in Guam. I enjoyed Christmas nonetheless. It won't be a big deal for me if it doesn't snow for Christmas in Maine. I still feel the spirit and celebrate its true meaning: the birth of Christ!
Congratulations on Head Start pick!
Congratulations Betsy! While a member of United Way of Androscoggin County's panel on Building Self-sufficiency and Independence, I had the pleasure of visiting Advocates For Children numerous times. I witnessed the great work that Betsy was doing in the community to ensure quality education for our children and support to families in Androscoggin County. I'm sure with her background and years of experience in the various aspects of children's advocacy that she is the perfect fit for her new position of Director of Head Start. Good for you Betsy! Keep up the great work.
The Future of Bates Mill No. 5
How about an indoor health and physical fitness facility? By the looks of it many people walking the streets of L-A (including myself) sure could use the facility. An indoor track would be nice to walk, bike, or jog in inclement weather. With the size of the building it could even incorporate a bike track. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that in 2003-2004, 17.1% of US children and adolescents were overweight, with the rates continuing to increase. These children are at an increased risk for developing health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. Activity levels for many children have declined because of a built environment that is unsafe for walking and bicycling, the low percentage of children who take physical education in school, and the popularity of sedentary leisure-time activities. This would be an excellent way for L-A to actually underline the word "Dirigo" (I lead) by being the first urban area in Maine to have such a facility.
100 mile limit between casinos
I am neither against or for a Lewiston casino. However, I would like to know how and when the minimum of 100 miles driving distance between casinos got lifted? Not too long ago, Oxford casino was being challenged for a violation of distance between Oxford and the Hollywood slots in Bangor. According to Google maps,Lewiston is about 86 miles from Bangor and approximately 15 miles from Oxford. Thus, unless I'm not understanding it correctly, building a casino in Lewiston would clearly violate the less than 100 miles rule between Bangor or Oxford.
Congratulations on your retirement
I too was one of Lee Hearn's students. No, not in the public school system. Lee and Bob,(her husband), have both been an inspiration in my life. Through their supervision and "parental" guidance as Superintendents at Opportunity Farm for Boys in New Gloucester, the Hearns helped mold me into what I am today: a successful person. As a young boy living at the "farm" in the 60's, I was taught all the values in life that would become instrumental in shaping my future and contributing to my success in this world. And this could not have happened without the guidance of the Hearns. Thus, I am not surprised to read about Lee's endearing qualities as a teacher at Sherwood Heights that she leaves behind as she embarks (reluctantly) on her life of retirement. Enjoy every minute of it Lee; you have been an inspiration in my life!
April Snow
Temperatures are climbing and staying consistently in the high 40's and low 50's, so I doubt seriously if there is any more snow fall that it will remain as such. It will more than likely turn to rain. Incidentally, isn't Brunswick Naval Air Station no longer existent? I can't help it, it's the proofreader in me.
Closing of Elan
It is indeed tragic that this place has been forced to shut down. Having read a plethora of information and stories contributing to the closing of this institution, I am convinced that it was the result of a few spiteful students who "just never grew up". I substituted as a teacher for about six months at Elan. I never saw nor even ever experienced any hands laid upon any students, or any other form of physical harm done to any students. The only "wrongdoing", if you want to refer to it as that, was the constant raising of voices by the staff and the strange style of punishment, I.E. berating by other students. I understood Elan's strange methods of discipline as necessary to changing the lives of these kids. I could not respond to this article unless I too was the product of an institutional upbringing. You see, from the age of 5, I was given over to two childrens homes before I ended up at my last place, a farm setting in Maine, where I eventually graduated from high school and went on, taking those building blocks that I learned at these institutions with me, and becoming very successful in life. So I'm not coming from lack of introspection or knowledge about what goes on behind the scenes at places such as Elan. The regimented lifestyle, the intentional humiliation, the constant pressure put upon you is for a reason. And, as I read this latest Sun-Journal story of many who have come forward to support Elan, I have come to the conclusion that the few who were the major complainers and contributed to the eventual closing of Elan really "never grew up".
Using Common sense in adverse weather conditions
Kudos to Mr. LaFlamme for bringing out an important point in this article. I drove my 4-wheel drive truck from Freeport to Auburn in the storm. Even with 4-wheel drive it was a huge task in keeping my truck on the road; the roads were glare ice. I had the semblance of mind however to park it in an Auburn parking lot and just wait out the snow crew. A few hours later, I left Auburn and the roads were much more navigable. Why do people refuse to just park their vehicle and wait for the road crew? We'd have far less chaos and accidents out there if they did so. There's never any reason to be in a hurry in a snowstorm, unless (and this is the only exception) there is a life-saving emergency.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Thanks for the wonderful memories. I do remember the vibrancy of Lewiston before the advent of the malls. It was fun to just window shop! There were hundreds of stores on Lisbon and Main Streets offering all sorts of eclectic merchandise. I was particularly fond of DeOrsey's Record Shop where, as a huge music aficionado, I use to pick out my favorite "45" and listen to it in a special booth designed to test drive the record before you bought it. I also frequented Bauer Hardware on Main Street, where I could get top quality ice skates, baseball bats and gloves. Another of my favorites, just up the road from Bauer Hardware, was Turgeon's Variety, where I could get a Root Beer float for only a nickel and rifle through thousands of "45's" that Mr. Turgeon used to buy and resell at the ridiculous low price of only 50 cents! And then, let us not forget the Empire and Strand theaters, where we could watch the most recent movies for only $1.00! What fun it was back then. Thanks for taking me down memory lane! Roger L. Castonguay, Mechanic Falls.
Response to Casino in Oxford
This is nothing but sheer vindictiveness on the part of Casinos No and Oh NO1. The chances of overturning the results with more than 5,000 votes for yes is almost impossible. It will just impede the process of moving forward with the casino. Now I'm left wondering what other tricks they have up their sleeve.
Response to Casino in Oxford
Mr. Blaun states in this article that "there are better ways to raise money for the state". I have heard this response coming from anti-casino activists many times. Now, I ask Mr. Blaun, what sort of better ways are there to raise money for the state? Seems to me that this state has been in economic doldrums, along with the rest of the nation, for years now. Give me solid information as to how we can improve economic conditions in this state and I'll be convinced. Otherwise, I see no problem in creating more jobs and getting Maine out of the massive welfare system that currently permeates our society in Maine.
Store theft
These are hard economic times. Statistics show a concomitant rise in crimes when the economy goes sour. Unfortunately, desperate people will do anything to survive. Hopefully they were able to get good surveillance pictures from the store cameras and are able to ID the crook(s).

Response to thinkingman
What's riverfront development and clean up have to do with improving and extending the trails alongside the Androscoggin River? "Riverfront development and "clean up" to me sound more like making the river more attractive in order to buttress the casino development.
I don't think the developers have any interest in improving the trails for the benefit of the local populace.
I'm puzzled
It's strange that a few of the respondents to this article shifted to another agenda: comments on Sun-Journal and Facebook. Why don't people stick to the question? I see this often, not only on SJ and FB, but other websites. Frankly, I'm puzzled. Regarding the crossword puzzle: why would people complain about clues or answers to puzzles that do not match their generation? Quite literally there has to be a million books, websites, newspaper sections, etc., out there for people who love to do crossword puzzles. If they felt that the puzzles didn't quite fit their style, move on to another book, website, or newspaper section. All newspapers are now on the web and can be accessed freely. Thus I feel this issue is much ado about nothing. What's an nine-letter word for boring? Apathetic.
Focus on Health & Physical Fitness
It's starting to make sense to me now..could it be that there has been secret efforts underway to bring the casino to Lewiston? After all, they've already succeeded in building garages, parking lots, and getting the casino vote on the ballot. The only part left is to convert the old Grand Trunk Railroad terminal on Lincoln Street to an Amtrak terminal. Just wondering...I would rather focus my attention on health and physical fitness. Why not improve and extend the nature trail alongside the Androscoggin River? The trail could be extended northward to Turner, Livermore Falls and southward to Durham, Freeport. If that could be done, I'd be one of the first ones to hike it. Right now, it is nothing compared to Back Cove in Portland and the trail alongside Androscoggin River in Topsham, heading towards Brunswick. The U.S. has become the most obese nation in the world; I would rather promote health and physical fitness and actually be one of the first regions in the nation to make a difference. But I guess people are more concerned about putting in a casino. That's truly pathetic.
Sights unseen: living in a fire station
Very informative article, however one glaring typo: "a multipurose" room should be a multipurpose room. Please hire me as a spell checker.
Matchbook Collector
Holy smokes! I bet there's nobody else in the country who can match that!
The public's interest in
The public's interest in Tiger's recent fall from grace has been unceasing and tiresome. I don't care anymore, as if I really cared about it when it hit happened. Why this insatiable appetite for the news media and others to dwell on this incident is beyond me! I'm sick of the subject, as I know millions of other Americans are as well. Why don't you just leave it alone! Furthermore, why don't you look in your closet and discover how many skeletons you have?! Mr. Cal Thomas, you made Biblical reference to repentance in your article. Well here's one for you: "before you try to remove the splinter from someone's eye, first remove the beam from your eye".
Back at MacantSaior: Your
Back at MacantSaior: Your point about putting the nine lieutenants on the road and away from their office jobs wouldn't solve the problem either. What would an additional nine patrolmen do significantly to patrol the traffic conditions? You're still looking at a vast amount of roads to patrol with as few as 32 patrolmen (if you took those nine lieutenants and put them in cruisers). And, there is still a budgetary problem to deal with. If you put nine more cruisers on the road, that's going to exacerbate the budgetary issue, not improve it. Also, there is more than just the task of traffic law enforcement that the police have in their line of duties. I realize that there may be a few lazy policemen out there but I don't think you can cast a blanket indictment on the whole force. The issue is not just germane to police, it is widespread throughout the work force of America. The buzz phrase of the 21st century is "do more with less". It's truly a conundrum, you want to see more traffic enforcement, but at the same time, there are less cruisers on the road and people knowing this are perhaps more inclined to break the law. And finally, in one of your other posts MacantSaior, you said "I've lived all over the country and never seen anything like the L/A area". Have you ever driven in Boston?
Great, informative article,
Great, informative article, particularly the pointers for conducting job searches I am in between jobs myself and I find that it really is a job to find a job! There are jobs out there but you've really got to be meticulous and scan numerous and eclectic job listing sites. I currently have six sites bookmarked and scan them daily. Thank you for your pointers and references.
The weather pattern is
The weather pattern is cyclical. It runs in an 11-year cycle. The solar cycle, or the solar magnetic activity cycle, is the main source of periodic solar variation (changing the level of irradiation experienced on Earth) which drives variations in space weather and to some degree weather on the ground and possibly climate change. (see elaboration on wikipedia.com).
I believe we are now on the cusp of the beginning of the 11-year sunspot cycle that creates more exposure to the sun in this region of the world, thus perhaps explains the unseasonable warmer climate and diminution of snow this winter.
I totally agree with Queenie as to the insulation factor of snow and it's importance, but really what can you do about it? God forbid we start controlling weather patterns and conditions; that could be disastrous for the world!
The name of his racing craft
The name of his racing craft was "No Patience", the parole board should reply to his request for early release with a vehement "No Deal".
I suggest you do your
I suggest you do your homework before you lash out at the efficacy of the Auburn Police Department. The Patrol Division consists of nine lieutenants, and twenty-three patrol officers, which accounts for approximately 70% of the sworn personnel in the department. The Patrol Division has the insurmountable task of patrolling one of the largest pieces of land in Maine. Auburn has a land area of 65.8 square miles! I could not find the data supporting the number of roads in Auburn, but I surmise that it's in the thousands. So it boils down to 23 cruisers having to patrol 65.8 square miles with thousands of roads. This is not a problem indicative of Auburn entirely; it's widespread throughout America. Consider also, shrinking budgets and payrolls. I believe the Auburn Police Department are doing as good a job as possible considering the area of responsibility in and budgetary constraints.
Agree with Skippy,
Agree with Skippy, Lewiston-Auburn continues to lose out on these opportunities of economic growth and visibility. Case in point, why is it cost-free to travel down Route 295 to and from Brunswick and Portland and L-A folks are charged to take the turnpike to get to Portland? That's just one example, and now we lose out on commuter rail service to L-A? It's frustrating!
I watched the game, it wasn't
I watched the game, it wasn't pretty. How do you almost blow a 5-0 lead? Given perhaps a few more minutes, the Lightning would have prevailed. The Celtics are no better. How and why do you continue to blow seemingly insurmountable leads?!
Great story Steve! My first
Great story Steve! My first knowledge of J.D. Salinger was when I was in the ninth grade (1963) and I decided to do a book report on "The Catcher In The Rye". My English teacher was shocked that I would even entertain the thought and vehemently said "no". Obviously she felt that I wasn't "adult" enough to read it. I read the book anyway and had to submit a different book for a report! Thanks for bringing back the great memories.
The turnpikes have been doing
The turnpikes have been doing this for years, where was the opposition when they started doing it? I got nabbed at the Hampton, NH toll booth for failure to pay the toll fee (I was later exonerated because of circumstances beyond my control). Anyway, they took a picture of my license plate and sent me the fine in the mail. I did not feel that that was an invasion of my privacy. And now that Maine is introducing a bill for automatic license plate readers in Maine, I'm all for it. There is a significant shortage of law enforcement personnel and this is a great tool for them to further enforce the law and protect us. Could it be that people who are so vehemently against license plate reading have hidden agendas rather than worrying about invasion of privacy?
I drive through there twice
I drive through there twice a day. Motorists just "fly" down that stretch of the road. It's no wonder accidents happen (and will continue to happen) on that part of Minot Ave. The two worst times to be on that stretch of the road is early in the morning, where everyone is rushing off to work, and in the early evening, when everyone is returning from work. It needs to be patrolled more often.
Bring on Patriots football!
Bring on Patriots football! I'm not interested in World Series if it doesn't involve Boston Red Sox.
The Angels have a
The Angels have a much-improved team over last year's (as do the Yankees). However, I think the Angels' bullpen (especially the relievers) are in much better shape to weather the course of the entire series. Therefore, I take the Angels over the Yankees. The World Series will be the Angels vs Phillies.
Wow, now that's what I call
Wow, now that's what I call persistence! It could have gone either way, good job EL!
You're incredibly patient.
You're incredibly patient. You obviously don't like the traffic conditions, public transportation system, high prices, and crime rate (who does?)--however you are able to transcend or tolerate those issues and find that "Los Angeles is now my heart". Having lived in major cities throughout America (and one city outside America: Tokyo), I find it very intolerable to even visit a BIG city, let alone live there. Something tells me you'll be back.
For those of you who have
For those of you who have invited politics--once again--into this story, the fact that where New Auburn begins and ends is a matter of insignificance. It is still Auburn. The real story here is that students will be able to show their value to the community and that the community will not be strapped with a huge monetary outlay to hire professional painters (which is always the concern of taxpayers). This is truly a wonderful way to symbiotically take care of an eyesore in the community. I can't wait to see the change; it has been in need of restoration for a long time.
Kudos to Rex Ryan to get his
Kudos to Rex Ryan to get his boys all fired up for the game but I like Belichick's response in only three words "talk is cheap". This is not going to be a close one---like the previous game with Buffalo--however I think Pats will do all the talking on the gridiron. Pats: 31, Jets 17.
Veritas: completely agree
Veritas: completely agree with your response to my glaring oversight of your second phrase. I believe that Woodstock however did have an impact on the political movement in this country. Foolish to think that we could do something about the war some 13,000 miles away without firing another shot, Woodstock became the stand for the 60s protest movement. And, the music festival did become a rallying point for a new political movement. Woodstock became the symbol of unity, caring, and sharing and that there was a possibility for things to be better and that people could make a difference. Moreover, that if you got involved and made a commitment to something, you could be part of change that's positive for everybody. So, summarily, I think Woodstock was not, in and of itself, the main reason for de-escalation in Vietnam, but it was a catalyst to moving in that direction, since the war had become increasingly unpopular, coupled with the re-unification of Vietnam.
Well, let's see...there was
Well, let's see...there was Michael Jordan, then there was Brett Favre, then John Smoltz, and then Pedro Martinez..and so on and so on of "has been's" trying to resurrect their illustrious careers by making a come-back. Is it for glory, is it for money, or both? Chances are, however, we've seen nothing but lackluster success in athletes who try to make a comeback in the world of sports. It's just not happening; give it up and stay retired. In all fairness, however, Pedro did perform exceptionally well in his first pitching stint with the Phillies, but it remains to be seen if he can continue on a positive note. As for Brett Favre, it remains to be seen if he will shine as in his glory days before retirement. I say, once you retire, stay retired.

Great to see a local legend
Great to see a local legend of the food industry back up and running but why did it take 27 months to re-open? Seems to me I've seen similar incidents before in which establishments were victims of a fire and they were back up and running in less than a year.
Red Sox are getting men on
Red Sox are getting men on base but can't drive them in. That's one problem. Pitching is not as great as earlier touted. That's another problem. More parity now in the American League. That's another problem. Red Sox can and WILL pull it out. They will win the wild card. Youkilis, Wakefield, Baldelli will be back in the lineup soon. Hopefully, Dice-K will have his head on straight for the homestretch. These guys are just too proud of a team to wilt and lose play off contention. There are still 48 games to play; it's a marathon, not a sprint. GO BOSOX!!
I was going to school in
I was going to school in Florida, having just enlisted in the Navy, while Woodstock was happening. I had strong regrets of not being able to go to Woodstock back then and the regrets still linger. I never saw the "hippies" as a group of people who were unkempt (although most of them appeared that way). That was not important to me; it's what they stood for that was important. To me they represented a group of people who were disillusioned over U.S. involvement in Vietnam and wanted to rebel peacefully. They held very strong distrust and hatred towards traditional middle class values and authority in the U.S. and wanted to change things in a peaceful manner. I served in the Navy with many sailors who, like me, felt very ambivalent about our service to our country. On the one hand, we felt very patriotic as a service member, but on the other hand, we also subscribed to the idealism of "make peace and love, not war". Responding to veritas: Woodstock was not "a bunch of foolishness". It was an attempt to galvanize the country towards peace and harmony; a way of taking our minds off war, hatred, and violence, qualities that permeated our country during the tumultuous 60's. I see nothing wrong with that.
News just didn't travel as
News just didn't travel as fast back in '69 as it does now, so I didn't hear about Woodstock until it was too late. In 1969, at eighteen years old, I was already "signed up" in the Navy and was attending school in Florida while a half of a million people gathered at Max Yasgur's farm for the "greatest moment in popular music history". However, last year, I did visit the site of Woodstock, in Bethel, New York, and it brought a chill to my bones. I only wished that I could have turned back the hands of time and gone to the original Woodstock. I don't think that there will ever be anything like it again.

It would seem to me that if
It would seem to me that if a person could (and was willing to) spread his/her payments out over 72 months for a new vehicle that they could get closer to $300-$400 a month for payments on a new vehicle(?) That certainly would contribute towards less repos. However, in some cases, if you already have a car that's classified as a "clunker" and is still good for a couple of more years on the road, don't get greedy for a new car/truck.
It will never fly in a state
It will never fly in a state that is still largely puritanical. They may have to do a modified version; maybe a "pseudo-monty"?
Henssis1: You're confusing
Henssis1: You're confusing this fire, which was in Auburn at the rotary (Minot Ave and Washington St), with the Cowan mill fire, which was in Lewiston. However, while we're on the subject of fires, I wonder if this is the work of the same person(s) who started the fire at the Cowan mill. The timing of both fires sure seems suspicious.

It's such a tragedy; it was a historical landmark. Unfortunately, these abandoned buildings don't get enough surveillance. Vagrants and mischievous kids break into the buildings, either for temporary shelter or to destroy them. I hope they find the perpetrators.

For Lise in Sabattus, to stop chipmunks and squirrels from getting into the bird feeders: get a shepherd's hook, hang the bird feeder on the hook, and grease the shepherd's hook with Vaseline or other slippery substance. Don't put the shepherd's hook near any trees or buildings because chipmunks and squirrels will simply jump from them onto the hook, thus circumventing the slippery hook. They're not stupid critters, but I have yet to see one climb a slippery pole.

I don't think that the size of the snakes are the real issue here. I think sales and ownership of potentially lethal animals such as boa constrictors and pythons should be illegal. Once these animals slither away freely, they are not like macaws and parrots, quite the contrary: they can kill someone.
