The solution isn't as simple

The solution isn't as simple as some seem to think. It is not for the victims of the bullying to change.....it is time the "No Bullying Policy" is enforced and the state needs to have laws with teeth in them so law enforcement can actually do something when bullying is reported. Posts are commenting to not use the social sites, to stay away from them. Be real, you are obviously part of an older generation. Today's generations use social sites for many things other than bullying. It is also a great way to get information about a variety of things. Businesses have social media sites, colleges and universities have social media sites. It is time the issue is treated for what it is....a problem that needs laws with teeth that needs to be addressed.

My son has been bullied by

My son has been bullied by Somali children. He has even been beaten up by them. However, the answer is not fighting them with fists. As far as parents not caring except for how much assistance their child is worth...I must disagree with you. It is another case of stereotyping because people are poor. Many of the middle class parents are working too hard to be a major factor in their child's life. And I would wager that upper class parents are also too busy doing what they do to be a major factor in their child's life. It is time to get away from the race card, the immigrant card, the discrimination card, and put the blame where it belongs. As parents we have failed to instill in our children good old fashioned values. While some parents are an integral part of the children's lives there are more who are not regardless of their economic situation.

As far as parenting in the USA classes, who are we to tell them how to parent their children. If they were to tell us to start parenting as they do we would all throw a fit. The point is PARENTS NEED TO PARENT, we need to instill values in our children and be responsible adults. There is an entire generation of children who think they were born with a silver spoon in their mouths and they need to be brought back in line. As a parent you can be sure I "RAISE" my children and not just allow them to grow up as they want.

I don't believe it matters

I don't believe it matters what started the fight. My main concern would be what is going on with our children today that there is so much discourse in their lives and since when did fighting become the answer to the problem. Maybe parents should start being more involved with their children and start teaching them some good old fashioned morals and ways of coping without resulting in throwing punches. Since this seems to be an ongoing issue in our schools then maybe parents need the wake up call. Educators are there to educate our children not to baby sit them. If our children cannot be responsible enough to stay out of fights then maybe parents need to be picking their children up from school and hiring baby sitters for them regardless of how old they actually are.

Oh so it is ok for the legislature to have to vote on budgets to cover shortfalls without all the facts but it isn't ok for them to vote on restoring services to children. Give me a break. This governor wants his cake and wants to eat it too.

Is it 2014 yet? This governor needs a major reality check on the correct behavior for a governor and he needs it quick. His name calling, bullying, and temper tantrums have no place in the position of Governor of the State of Maine.

Words when used to describe a "thing" are not hurtful but when used to describe a "person" is demeaning. My son has multiple disabilities and when asked why he is seeing a professional he will look at you and say "I have issues"...with that context it makes him no different from other children his age as all people have issues. But to use another word such as "retarded" to describe my son is not only incorrect but also leads to others bullying him. Just because a person may have a mental illness does not mean they are retarded. It just means they have an issue that they deal with. Words DO hurt. It is about time our lawmakers start using language that doesn't hurt the people of Maine.

First, to maintain public

First, to maintain public confidence, it’s critical to avoid the appearance of impropriety. We need to include Charlie Summers in this as well. While it is not illegal nor against the constitution he is running for the U.S. Senate while still holding the office of Secretary of State, which also oversees the elections. It seems to be a very high "appearance of impropriety" for him to accept the signatures from people who are running against him in this election. He should resign from his office, or remove himself from anything to do with the election proceedings for this race.

I don't feel that the issue

I don't feel that the issue is the problem with the computer system. There are glitches in everything within all departments. I feel the issue is that the legislature was asked to make uninformed decisions. The commissioner knew there was a problem in January and yet did not come forward with that information until after the legislature voted to cut 19,000 people. This is from an administration that consistently says they want transparency in all areas. Well you can't have transparency until you have trust and honesty and hiding things goes a long way towards building even more distrust.

It doesn't matter who it traces back to. What does matter is that there is an issue that needs to be fixed. That "ISSUE" was not brought to the attention of our legislature and they were asked to act without complete factual information. There is none of the "transparency" that this administration claims to be aiming for. There is also no final amount that this has cost the state or will cost when we have to repay the federal government. Until such time as there is complete information then ALL tax breaks should be suspended. We cannot cut revenues to the state while we have such a budget quandary. It is also about time this administration starts looking for other places to cut because there is no way in HELL that DHHS can foot the entire budget....maybe they should start with the warden service...multiple new vehicles in a time when we are in such dire straits....salaries to people who can't be up front with congress or the people of Maine for that matter....and maybe they ought to come clean about a lot more things that we will eventually hear about.

The government has capped the amount of pain medication a person needs to 45 days....try living with fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis and tell me 45 days is enough to live a normal life. Mike, the appearance I am

Mike, the appearance I am speaking about is Charlie Summers, Secretary of State, who oversees the election process and accepted the signatures of other candidates running for Senator Snowe's seat. While I have no problem with him running (he hasn't gotten elected any other time he has run) he should not be the one to oversee the signatures nor the election process as a part of his job. It just raises many ethical questions should a disagreement arise. It allows the opportunity to raise many questions should any of the signatures be discounted for any reason. Ethically I would think he would stand a better chance if he were to step down from the Secretary of State position just as I would feel the same way about ANY person holding that position.

Dan, just a clarification.

Dan, just a clarification. Greene relies on the Androscoggin County Sheriffs Department and the Maine State Police. Both departments alternate their coverage. Greene taxpayers DO pay for the service and have for as long as I can remember. I grew up on a road in Greene that is a major route for the school buses going to Turner. Speeding is an issue on the country roads that is often addressed by the police. Too bad they don't get the chance to do it more often then they do. And I too know about this as my mother was a dispatcher for the fire/rescue and was often called by the County Sheriff to relay to officers in the field that their dispatchers couldn't reach.

Lets see, where to

Lets see, where to begin....maybe right there in Augusta....cut the salaries, make it so Senators, Representatives, and yest he Governor get a very small stipend to cover travel expenses. Then maybe we get people who actually care about Maine and not just those out to help themselves and their cronies get whatever they want. Let's cut buying new vehicles for the wardens....how many new vehicles do they need each year...I saw at least 12 at one of the ice fishing events I attended. Lets do away with tax breaks for big corporations that really don't do anything for us. My whole point is that you CANNOT cut taxes of any kind at this moment when their are such huge problems with the current budget. Instead of wasting time (paid for with taxpayer money) finding ways to cut taxes maybe the time should be spent figuring out how to solve the current problems and keeping the safety net for children, elderly, and disabled people. I have never said that taxes should be cut...that is the whole point...this administration wants to cut taxes and yet they are proposing cuts to programs that should be left alone just to help their cronies....their tax cuts won't help the elderly disabled person who doesn't pay income tax but do need services. Their tax cuts won't help children who do not pay income taxes......so why take from those programs.

As far at the brother in law getting the job...after the daughter being given a job....it is not the legality of it....it is the appearance of favoritism from someone who claims to want transparency in government. Appearance goes a long way towards a favorable or unfavorable opinion of a person.

There are no decent jobs in this state that aren't just handed to relatives of Governor LePage. Ms. Chute suggested ways to solve the problems by bringing competitive fields to the state. Now the Governor wants to cut income taxes....now while that may be an awesome idea and may help some families....how can he justify cutting revenues at this time when the budget is facing such a shortfall....just doesn't make sense that he wants to cut even more in revenues before other issues are solved.

Since I was trying to be responsible and use some form of affordable contraception it is my opinion that my insurance SHOULD have covered it since it was ME paying the premiums and ultimately the price. And another thing...would you rather pay for a prescription to prevent pregnancy or the cost of the woman and child on welfare.....I would think it would be cheaper to pay for the prescription for birth control....Now since you claim my child is a "mistake" you go sell your ASSUMPTIONS to some one who cares....

tactfultina's picture

And why should the woman

And why should the woman suffer the consequences alone because the father decides he doesn't want to be part of the child's life and walks away, quits a job to not have to pay child support, and doesn't respond to any requests for help for the child? And BTW parents are responsible for their children until the child reaches 24 and yet as of 18 or 21, depending on the service, the parents have no say. My daughter needs my financial information for financial aid to finish college, is going to be 21 in May, and yet I cannot get any information from the school or talk to her doctor about her medical condition without a signed release. If she cannot pay her bills at school they come to me but not her father because he walked away and stopped having any contact with her once she turned 18 and he no longer had to pay child support. So now all the financial stuff falls on her and me but he gets away scott free. And before any of you say anything....my daughter is the result of failed birth control (condom). So even though I took responsibility for a bad choice and still support my daughter so that she can finish college and support herself, her father walked away and takes no responsibility and would not have paid support if I had not gotten the state to garnish his wages. And so in retrospect, I wish I had had the option of birth control paid for by my insurance as it would have been much cheaper in the long run. Remember any male can be a father but only real men can be daddies. We need more "real men" to stand up and accept the responsibilities for their actions.

Crystal, part of the problem

Crystal, part of the problem is that some people think they know all the answers when they really don't understand the issue, the problem, the cause, or the solution. This just goes to show how

This just goes to show how much people do not really understand the welfare system. People who receive full benefits are required to participate in the ASPIRE program which in turn requires recipients to either go to school, enter a job training program, volunteer for a non profit agency for 30 hours per week, or do 30 hours of job search per week. It is not always a case of something for nothing. Some who are not required are those with multiple barriers such as a special needs child or a disability in which they are waiting to get social security disability. In those cases, "good cause" must be shown and they are reviewed each year.

Maybe instead of making assumptions about people receiving any kind of help we should look at what word is in the word assume....Assuming things make asses out of you and me....

I am not putting the "blame"

I am not putting the "blame" for this particular issue on the current administration. However, I am putting the "blame" for not coming clean about it earlier on them. They knew there was a budget shortfall, they asked the legislature to make cuts to cover that shortfall, the did NOT give the legislature all the information to make an informed decision. This latest problem is going to create an even larger shortfall as we are going to end up paying the federal government back which in turn is going to create an even bigger problem that will need to be addressed. What was the benefit of holding this information until now? There is now more mistrust then before. And it also appears that now there is proof that the administration will withhold pertinent information if they believe it will benefit what they want to accomplish. So much for transparency in government. Now we have to go and fill an even bigger shortfall (in which we still do not know the exact amount of) instead of being able to do it all at one time. Another waste of time and money.

Change...not a joke. People would more likely accept change if it wasn't accomplished in such a back handed manner. And by that I mean....be open with ALL the facts and not just the ones that you pick and choose.

tactfultina's picture

First, there would need to be

First, there would need to be evidence that the 19,000 knew they were ineligible. Second, I know of a specific case where the woman went to work and got insurance through her job. She took the new insurance information to the pharmacy and refilled a prescription. The pharmacy then put the request for payment through to Maine Care instead of to the new insurance plan. When she found out what they had done she questioned it and called the state to report it. Is she responsible for the money paid by Maine Care? I would think not.

If any of the 19,000 knew they were ineligible and continued to use the Maine Care then yes, by all means, make them pay it back. But if any of 19,000 did as this woman did then they should not be held responsible for the charges, in her case it should be the pharmacy that mischarged the system.

And to clear up a misunderstanding. The article said money is loaded on the Maine Care cards to pay medical bills. This is not money that a recipient actually has access to. In most cases, the insurance information is on file with doctors offices and pharmacies and their billing systems put in the request for authorization to accept to the state system. Then the system tells them that the person is either eligible or ineligible, or if it is too soon for them to fill a prescription. Most medical offices only require that you show your insurance information once a year unless there has been a problem with billing in the past. So I would think, before blaming the 19,000 and requiring them to pay back the funds we would need to know if they were using the card intentionally or if there was a bigger problem in that the billing systems of the medical professionals were billing Maine Care because the information was not changed in their systems. If the client told them they no longer had Maine Care and it was not changed in their systems then it is not the fault of the client.

I think if everyone were looking at this honestly we would have to say that there is still a lot to be uncovered in this current screw up. The whole health care system is a problem that needs to be fixed. That not only does DHHS need to fix their systems but the medical profession needs their billing systems to be looked at so mistakes in billing such as the woman who tried to get a new insurance billed isn't an issue as well.

And here is something else to think about, how many people actually look at the details of the bills they receive as a copy of who paid what...most that I know just look to see that whatever their insurance was suppose to pay is paid and if they have a balance then how much it is. Not many take the time to actually look and see which insurance was billed.

With no offense meant towards

With no offense meant towards Mr. Lockman, I believe he should look at the current facts that have come to light. The legislature was asked to solve a budget shortfall without having all the information that was needed. With the latest discovery of 19,000 receiving Maine Care benefits after having been declared ineligible there will now be an even larger shortfall as the state will have to repay the federal government. It has also come to light that Ms. Mayhew knew this information at least as early as January and her staff knew even earlier than that. We all know that change needs to happen, however, how can there be fiscal change/responsibility when the legislature is not given all the information required to make an informed decision.

Inexperienced directors....gee maybe they need to go back to the basics and learn the systems before being put in a leadership roll. Responsibility...Governor Lepage should also be held accountable since he put people in to implement his policies without making sure they had the proper knowledge of the systems to do the work competently.

The fact of the matter is

The fact of the matter is that the legislature was asked to cover a budget shortfall with incomplete information that was known to Ms. Mayhew. They were asked to take away from eligible people because DHHS didn't have the money to pay for the services. Now many people are going to be without health coverage because Ms. Mayhew didn't open her mouth and reveal all the facts prior to a vote by the legislature. How is what she did any different then what has come to light in other departments? She is accountable and should be removed from the position. And since she knew at the end of January, why does she need even more time to figure out exactly how much this cost the state. That should already be a known amount. The people using the religious beliefs to bolster their argument against gay marriage are hypocrits. What happened to the biggest belief of all "God created all men to be equal" He does not see people as male or female, black or white, gay or straight. He just sees a person He created.

Get over it. If two people of the same sex want to get married to have the same benefits as two heterosexual people then that is their choice. What they do in their home and in their bedroom is no one else's concern. In fact there are many who would be surprised at what goes on behind closed doors in heterosexual relationships. Oh wait, I forgot, we shouldn't discuss the fetishes that people have, the sexual likes and dislikes of heterosexuals. The fact is there are many people in this world that would actually SHOCK people that take the word of God literally.

So instead of taking people

So instead of taking people off MaineCare because they work at jobs that do not offer health insurance or the insurance is too expensive for them, why not offer them reduced rates and have them pay for their MaineCare.....then we get people covered by insurance, manage their health care plans, and keep people healthy. It also would bring in a revenue to DHHS...not everyone uses MaineCare abusively and I am sure there would be some coverage paid for and not used.

Mike, it is not just the DHHS

Mike, it is not just the DHHS budget that is causing problems. You are sounding more and more like someone that just doesn't want anyone to get assistance. My comment did not deny there is a problem in this state. But there are many areas that need to be changed...the size of the legislature, the transportation department, education, dhhs, msha, and probably many more that I can't even think of right now. I am saying that if the government found a way to bring jobs to Maine they could get many off the welfare rolls and save money. Yet they won't even work with the businesses that are hear to get people to work. The welfare rolls have thousands of people who have received job training but cannot get a job because they have no experience. What good is it doing the state to pay for the job training, the education, etc when businesses will not hire them? If you truly want to save money so that taxes can be lowered then why not look at this avenue? Maybe then the truly needy would be able to get their Maine Care coverage.

How about instead of playing

How about instead of playing the blame game we look at bringing jobs to the state that will hire the people on state assistance??? If there are no jobs then people cannot get a job that offers health insurance. However, if people in government would look at solving the issues instead of putting a bandaid on it then maybe we would get somewhere. Slashing people of MaineCare results in multiple problems that will end up costing the state more in the long term. Long term solutions will not only improve the state's budgetary woes but it will also enable the people to be self sufficient and will stop some of the bickering that is going on in these blogs. It is not a Democratic or a Republican problem...it is a state problem and needs to be cured versus long term treatment plans.

Holding Ms. McCormick responsible for what happened prior to her watch is what is making this seem like a witch hunt by Governor LePage and Mr. Poliquin, who should come clean on his own questionable behavior.

Warren Buffett, in an

Warren Buffett, in an interview with CNBC , offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:"I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC . "You just
pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP , all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds)
took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple!
The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail,
cell phones, etc.Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure.
Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to
a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask
each of those to do likewise.
In three days, most people in The United States of America will
have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed
around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2012

1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no
pay when they're out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the
Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into
the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the
American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all
Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the
American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void
effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this
contract with Congressmen/women.

Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in
Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers
envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their
term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will
only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive
the message. Don't you think it's time?

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

Mike, I have never stated

Mike, I have never stated that I refuse to work...I have stated that I do not have child care for my special needs child and that creates a major barrier. I have stated that most employers will not hire someone who constantly needs time off to go to medical appointments. I do not REFUSE to let anyone take care of my child....I have stated that they will not allow him into daycares. There is a big difference. And the jobs you are talking about are all well and good but do not pay enough to even pay the child care when you are dealing with a special needs child if you can find someone to do it.

And FYI I have complied with ALL Aspire requirements...I do have certifications that I have earned that would allow me to work. I have been on a job search for a number of months. I have been refused jobs because I do not have actual experience in the field. I have volunteered through Aspire at various places to get experience and to EARN the assistance I get. I continue to get education on my own in the hopes of finding a field that would give me a chance. I pay my bills and do not drink or do drugs. I take care of my child and get all the assistance his condition requires. I work with the school system to make sure they are not just a daycare for my child.

So don't sit on that sanctimonious throne of yours and say I refuse to do anything. I probably work just as hard as you only in different ways. You go to work at Burger King or Sams and support a family because FYI....there are people on welfare that do work those jobs and still qualify for benefits because the jobs do not pay enough to support a family.

I have also said that there are no jobs here that will hire that actually pay a living wage. They want experience only. Someone with an Associates Degree can't get a job because they have no experience in the field. How do they get experience when employers won't give them a chance. I have offered solutions to look at and it always comes back to the same thing....cut services for people who need them. Do you realize how much money could be found if we had actual employers out there that would work with us and not turn us down. First it was people didn't have the education required. So people went out and got the required education. Now it is people do not have the experience needed. So people now have degrees or certifications that are useless until the business climate changes. Is that being looked at...NO ...Is anyone looking at ways to get business to work with us....NO. What is being done....well let's just stop the assistance to these "lazy" people and let them fend for themselves. I would love to work....I have gotten 3 different certifications within the medical field and yet I can't get the experience needed to get a job. A friend of mind went to school and got an Associates Degree and yet she cannot find a job in the field because she doesn't have experience....that tells me the problem also lays within the business community.

I have tried to work and lost jobs because I was constantly called by the schools to get my son or to go to take care of a situation with him. Employers are not going to work with a person that needs constant time off to go to medical appointments with a child when there is such high unemployment and many people competing for the same jobs. If I could, I would work, but finding child care is impossible and finding a job that will work around the situation I am in has been impossible to date but I haven't given up.

tactfultina's picture

A better solution to the

A better solution to the problem with the schools would be to get rid of "No Child Left Behind". That unfunded mandate is what is causing our schools to fail because the teachers have to teach to a damn test instead of teaching to the basics. The tests also do not take into account that some kids just do not test well. There is no help for the kids that just need a little extra boost to actually grasp things. It took me 6 years to get my child into Title 1 for math, now that he is there his test scores went from 208 to 220. We are focusing so much attention on the tests that we are forgetting the basics.

Another thing, parents need to take responsibility for sitting with their child while they are doing their homework and making sure the student is doing it and understanding it. If the child is not understanding it then it is up to the parent to get to the bottom of why. It is up to the parent to go to the school and advocate for their child. It is up to the parent to call a meeting with officials and say what are you going to do to help me (us) get this child where he belongs.

Stop putting the failure all on the teachers and put it where it belongs....the parents, the students, the system, the government and fix the problems versus putting a bandaid on the problems.

Bob....I went to public schools. My children have gone and are going to public schools. The problem is the government interfering with education in the first place. We already have the choice to send our children to another school if our school is failing to meet the standards. The problem is all schools in Lewiston are failing and it is not because of the teachers. It is because of the standardized testing that is pointless. The averages of the tests include the ELL students as well as the students that speak English very well. Stop mandating things and start paying for what the students and teachers need. Remember if a child doesn't learn it is not just the fault of the school. Parents are responsible for teaching their children as well as children are responsible for doing the work and not blowing it off.

I have cousins who attended a religious private school and guess what...they are no smarter then any of the rest of us. The only difference is that their education cost more then the rest of the family's did.

Throw into that the fact that most are single parents and if they hold down multiple jobs the state will get involved and say you are not being a good parent. Throw into that the fact that they want parents to be involved with education. Throw into that the cost of rent, insurance for family coverage, electricity, and phone costs and there you get it....there needs to be jobs that actually pay a decent wage brought to this state to apply for.

Most people on MaineCare

Most people on MaineCare require a prior authorization for medicines or treatments that are recommended by their physicians. Most of the time these prior authorizations are denied or extremely limited. For example, 8 physical therapy sessions are requested and only 2 are authorized. Smoking cessation products are requested and are denied unless others have been tried and proven not to work. Maybe if the treatments that worked were allowed then more people would be able to get healthy faster or have the ability to stay healthy longer and the red tape that people go through would be diminished and thus saving money. Do you think the doctors do not charge for their time in proving things for getting the prior authorizations? What about the staff processing the requests? Their labor isn't cheap.

Going back to the physical therapy example...2 approved visits result in one being a consultation and one being a follow-up. Sometimes the treatment requires equipment that cannot be found in a home or in a gym. An ultra sound treatment is one example of that. Where multiple uses of this machine may very well move the patient onto the road to recovery it is not available for more then 2 visits because it isn't approved. That leads to more doctor visits, in some cases a worsening of symptoms instead of an improvement of symptoms.

Administratively there are also lots of waste. Multiple mailings that are identical which wastes paper, ink, staff time, postage, etc.

What I am trying to say is that there are a lot of ways to save money without drastically stopping programs. In the past there were programs that showed people who recieved state aid to make healthy meals cheaply and to stretch the food stamp dollar. However, even with these programs there are problems that need to be addressed. The cost of food has risen drastically over the past couple of years and yet the food stamp allotment has stayed basically the same. Most on food stamps use the less healthy items because it is cheaper and can stretch further. It is not always better to "teach them to fish" when the items needed are so expensive. Sometimes it is a choice that people are forced into making because of the cost. Raising the snack tax isn't going to take those choices off the table. It is just going to make people make even worse choices because of the cost.

We are adults and if we want to talk public we can and if we want to talk private then we should have that right as well.

And just an FYI, beer kills brain cells and if you get free beer then I want a free maid to help clean my house and that won't kill my brain but allow my brain more time to blog. (haha)

Can anyone tell me how much

Can anyone tell me how much this investigation is costing the taxpayers of the state? Can anyone tell me where the state is getting the money for this investigation since we are "broke"? Can anyone tell me how Ms. McCormick is responsible for stuff that happened before she took the position?

As far as I am concerned the only questions Ms. McCormick should have to answer is for anything that occurred on her watch. If it happened in 1998 then the person in charge at that time should be held accountable. The way it is going at the moment is like saying my parents are responsible for my choices even though I am in my 40s and no longer live at home.

Mike, I told you all I eat for lunch is peanut butter and strawberry preserves on wheat bread. I save what food I have for my kids and I eat very little. And just an FYI Mayor Macdonald had a piece in the Twin City Times that I bet you and I would disagree on.

And becoming friends with someone doesn't mean you have to agree on everything and if I lived my life on worrying about what others think of me then I wouldn't still be here today because I am not normal in my way of thinking and tend to explode before I can verbalize my legit arguments on something.

I am still waiting, however, for an answer to previous posts on other articles on some thoughts I had that I thought were valid. I.E. If the legislature passes the current MaineCare budget items and Maine does NOT get the waiver then will we end up owing the feds even more money? Would that put us in an even worse position then we are now? Wouldn't it be prudent to know the answers to these questions before deciding if this is the best course for the people of the state of Maine?

Mike, while I agree to your idea of a private message feature I must disagree with banning the so-called trolls. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, whether we agree with them or not. All of us are smart enough to figure out who is who and what is what and to form our own opinion, or at least we should be. There have been times when I have become upset with you as I am sure there have been times when you have become upset with me. I do, however, believe that the SJ comes down on some harder then others. The rules need to be the same for all and not just for a certain few. For example, Dan seems to be warned consistently but others who put him (or anyone else) down do not get the same warnings consistently.

Maybe SJ should forbid us from using the words Democrat and Republican in our comments and then we can all get warned (lol).

Paul while I might normally

Paul while I might normally agree with you but when a 70 pound kid gets attacked, bullied, threatened, or chased by a group of 20-30 I would not promote going after the biggest kid just to be pounded on by the rest of them. It is time for a reality check. When you report an episode of bullying to the police now a days they talk to the parties involved and come back and say well the 20-30 of them say this so it is their word against the word of 1 so there is not really anything we can do as it will be thrown out of court. It is time to say enough is enough...arrest the little bullies and give them a taste of the big bad world as a community and not just as an individual. The more the justice system looks the other way the worse it is going to get.

And for those that are going to start blaming the influx , think again, the white kids do it too. The difference is the influx runs in bigger packs because they are concentrated in one or two areas... but all kids do it. Let's put the power back in the hands of the teachers, parents, schools, and the justice department. When we say we have a 0 tolerance then let's treat it that way and make the consequences meet the crime. If you want to say they bully because of low self esteem then put the parents on notice too...charge them as well for failing to be responsible for their child. If my children ever acted the way some of the kids today do they would find out that mama is not one to make mad. I have no doubt that my children act differently when I am not around but god help them if mama finds out they did wrong.

Bullying has increased in my opinion. It is now also a cultural difference between the children. With the current school population as diverse as it is there is a lot of misunderstanding of the different cultures and issues that face the children. A child who has ADD, ADHD, medical problems, learning disabilities, or are just plain different get bullied on a regular basis in some of our schools. My son is one of the kids who has been bullied to an extreme and I am looking at not sending him to this middle school as he will be put back with the kids who went after him on a daily basis. I moved once to get away from it but there is no moving to another district for middle and high school in this city.

So Mark does that mean if a woman identifies the father, it is proven, and the father pays child support and reimburses the state for the welfare cost then it is ok to give out the welfare? Cuz if that is the case I will argue it with you. As a TANF recipient you have to work with child support enforcement to identify the other parent, find the other parent, and get court ordered child support from the other parent that goes directly to the state of Maine. Failure to comply with those rules results in sanctions which under the federal law, prohibits you from getting benefits for a period of time, and preventing you from any extensions if you get enough of these sanctions. You also have to work with ASPIRE and either get education, job training, or volunteer 30 hours per week. So just to clear a few things up, it is NOT FREE money for the majority. Obviously there are some that slip through, but the majority of the welfare roll is compliant or they wouldn't be getting their money. If they do the problem is then administrative because someone isn't doing their job correctly.

Ok gentlemen, here is one for all of you. A letter was received this week and my understanding is that Maine most likely will NOT receive the waiver it is going to need. So with that in mind, what happens if the legislature makes these proposed cuts and then we do NOT get the waiver? Will we owe the federal government more money? Will we lose more federal money? Will we have an even bigger problem then we do now?

Second, Lepage wants to go to Washington to talk with the DHHS secretary so that we can get the waiver.....how does he think he can change her mind since other states have tried and been denied. He can't bully her, he can't threaten her, he can't tell her to kiss his butt so just how is he going to change her mind?

Who is paying for his trip to Washington....Maine is broke he says?

This current budget problem cannot be solved in this manner if it could possibly cost the state more money.

Brenda, while I see that the program needs fixing, I still would like to know more facts. What will happen if they pass this in Augusta and the feds do not give us a waiver? Will we lose more federal money? Will we have to pay the federal government more money? These are questions that need to be answered truthfully before they do anything in Augusta. I also agree with Dan to some extent. The tax break needs to be rescinded. If the state is in that dire a straight then now is not the time to lose revenue of any kind. These cuts will also affect my family and I see the need to fix the program, but I cannot see fixing it on the backs of the poor unless we know what the end result is going to be. With the climate in Washington, I do not see a waiver coming so my biggest fear is that they will pass the cuts in Augusta and we will end up in trouble with Washington and it will cause a bigger financial mess then we already have. And then the Governor will want to take even more from the poor, the elderly, the disabled, and the children. That is what we cannot allow.

Here is my question....if the proposed cuts are enacted by the legislature and Maine does NOT get the waiver, where does that leave us? Will we lose federal funds? Will we have to pay anything to the federal government?

The track record of the federal government granting the waiver is NOT favorable. I believe before any legislative action is taken we need to look at these concerns. Losing federal money will make an even bigger problem. Having to pay back the federal government will also create a bigger problem. And I, for one, would like to know what will happen if the waiver is not granted.

I do not like Lepage. I do not like what he is trying to do. However, I do see that some things need to change (whether this is the right thing to do or not remains to be seen) but I do not think our representatives should make a decision without ALL the facts...and I mean the truth, not the interpretation, not the misstatements, not the bully pulpit....the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the whole truth.

Mike, I knew you wouldn't let

Mike, I knew you wouldn't let me down. However, in my opinion, the nonfactual/fictitious, misstatements made by the Governor is a big problem. He and the legislature are employed by the people of the state of Maine and yet they feel the need to lie to us. Unfortunately, Maine has no recall solution. My beliefs are not Democratic nor Republican. My problem is that as an employee of the people of the state of Maine, the Governor should not be setting a bad example for everyone. If he acted like he does in a regular job he would be reprimanded and/or fired for his behavior. The state is not Marden's, we do not have to worry that he will fire us if we do not stand for his bullying tactics. Maybe if he would just be factual and not put his interpretation into everything then he would get more support. And if the Democrats start bullying back then they are also wrong as 2 wrongs do not make it right. And if it upsets the Governor that the Democrats are starting to bully back then maybe he should "get out of the kitchen".

How about this....tell the facts, back the facts up with proof, and let people make their decisions accordingly. It would be a novel idea for politics.

The only thing I will say on

The only thing I will say on this subject is that it would be nice to hear a State of the State that is factual, not intimidating, non bullying, non threatening. It would be nice if there were no "misstatements". It would also be nice if there is written proof to the words the Governor may speak.

As far as the democrats being combative and using bullying tactics, well, what's good for one is good for another. And yes I know Mike will probably have something to say about this but that's life.

tactfultina's picture

Mike it is not seething

Mike it is not seething hatred that I feel. This Governor can't seem to do anything without resorting to threats and bullying and for a person that was elected with less than 50% of the vote you would think he would try a bit harder to not put his foot in his mouth and to actually know what he can and cannot do. Others have offered to work with him but he seems to only want things "his way". One person blogged that it was like him acting like a 2 year old having a temper tantrum. He is not the state of Maine but he is actually an employee of the people of the state of Maine. If he were to act like this in a real job he would most likely be fired in a heartbeat.

While we all know that changes need to happen the way he is going about it is WRONG. He lies, "misstates things" and tries to bully and threaten people into conforming to his way of thinking. There are cuts that can be made without affecting so many people but he doesn't want to see it that way...he wants things his way and his way only. For example, today I got 3 pieces of mail for DHHS in 3 different envelopes, 2 of them were identical...that is a waste of paper, postage, ink to print them, and someone's time to stuff the envelope and seal it....how much could be saved if the state actually put some effort into not doing duplicates for the thousands it mails things out to. How much work could actually get done if staff was not constantly putting a spin on his words? How much could be saved if, when investigating an agency, they focus on things that occur since that person took the position and not what happened before her time? How much could be saved if instead of bullying and threatening people he sat down and actually worked with people?

I have stated in my blogs multiple times that I am neither Democrat nor Republican and I stand by that. I may not always express myself in a way that some can understand but I will fight for what I believe in and the major thing is leave our elderly and children alone....The more things get taken away from the elderly and the children then the harder I will fight.

The other thing I will fight is being bullied or threatened in making my choices. I don't allow my children to bully or threaten others and I will not stand by while an elected official bullies and threatens others.

How much do you want to bet that the voting public takes us back to the Democrats just to put a stop to the bullying and threatening from the current administration? That's a real good way to make change....now that I think about it....keep it up Governor, I can survive a couple more years of having someone to laugh at......

Mike, I do have great disdain

Mike, I do have great disdain for those who seem to think theirs is the only opinion. Insulting, maybe, I do tend to insult people who think they know everything because in effect they are actually showing their stupidity. I.E. Lepage saying he will close schools when he does not have that authority. You were invited to attend...gee sounds like someone was trying to stack the room with LePage supporters so he would have an easy time and be less apt to stick his foot in his mouth..too bad it didn't work that way. He is not just the Governor for the people who support him but he is the Governor for the 61% who don't support him and I would wager to say that he has even less support then he did before. This I know because I have friends who were all for him and now they wish he would just go away. If you think I am angry then you are correct because what he wants to cut affects my family in multiple ways and I have become the "mama bear" trying to protect her children (and in this case protect a parent as well).

I know we each have our priorities but in my opinion if this Governor truly wanted to hear from ALL the people, he would find a way to have 2 meetings for each town he calls "Capital for a Day" so that those that have other commitments and work could attend (and yes, taking care of a special needs child is work, even if you do not consider it so)...he would have the priorities of taking care of everyone in the state and not just his "buddies".

How much money is he spending on this investigation into the MSHA? How much money is he spending to investigate Mr. Poliquin? I bet he is spending more on MSHA then on Mr. Poliquin. He claims to be working closely with the hospitals and yet neither of the Lewiston hospitals were on his tour when he came here....why is that?

How can anyone be proud of a Governor who is a bully? Who threatens children and seniors? Who misstates most things? Who changes things to suit his agenda? And who has his staff spin the words out of his mouth because he wants to break the constitution and end up costing the state more federal money which is what would happen if he closed schools early?

You think I need to wake up but here is my thoughts...THE GOVERNOR NEEDS TO WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT THREATENING AND BULLYING ARE NOT GOING TO BE TOLERATED.

First he wants to break the law. Second, closing the schools that early would result in the loss of more federal funds which will cause more problems. Third our schools have a No Bullying Policy and yet the leader of this state is the biggest bully of them all. What a way to undermine what we are trying to teach our children. As it is you would defend him if he had a gun to the heads of the people of this state and think you were the only one with all the answers. Well I have bit my tongue long enough....Mike you know nothing about the lives of the people you put down all the time. You find a way to try to act like you are bigger than anyone out there, smarter than anyone out there, and better off then anyone out there. Well let me say this....people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones and those that defend Governor LePage to the level that you do had best make sure their closets have no skeletons because at some point all LePage is doing is going to come back and bite every citizen in the butt. And one other thing...as a parent it is my job to be home with my child when they are home and to help them with homework, to feed them, to prepare them for bed and to see that they have quality time with family so they learn values. I do not go out and leave my child with babysitters. I plan my life around my child's. I do not just up and go and leave him with whoever. I am a PARENT FIRST. Mr. Poliquin is allegedly doing something that is against the rules and yet he doesn't seem to be held accountable to the same standards or investigation. This is a prime example of Governor LePage wanting his hands in the cookie jar and getting rid of anyone he cannot control. He can't do basic math and yet wants control of the MSHA. He can't tell the truth but yet he wants to control another agency. Let's put all who allegedly violate the rules, laws, and/or policies under the microscope and not just those that Governor LePage doesn't like. My son is in Martel school and will be presenting at the next parent teacher conference. I believe it is a good idea for him to learn how to be accountable for his work, how to present what they are learning, and how his effort impacts his grade. These are things I would love him to learn now as an elementary student before he gets to the middle and high schools and adopts the attitude that it's not my fault it's the teacher's fault or they can't teach. Let him learn now the importance of his education and maybe, just maybe, we can increase the number of students who graduate and go on to further their education.

As far as grouping them based on their abilities I disagree. My son is 11 and is academically where his peers are but socially he is younger then his years. He would be out of place in either group but would be more apt to catch up socially if he remains with students his age who are going through the same physical changes he is going through.

Jonathan I think you

Jonathan I think you misunderstood my point and maybe I wasn't clear. Teachers today are teaching to the tests. They are having to prepare students to take standardized tests. They are unable to just teach to each student's style of learning. While some students may be excellent test takers some are not. Some students learn by a hands on style, some by a verbal style, and some by taking tests. Everything today is based on students meeting the goals of the standardized tests. Nothing in those tests actually prepare the student for real life experiences. Some of the students are not good test takers so even though they may know the material they are unable to showcase that knowledge. These tests are government mandated and not "teacher" mandated. I say we need to untie the teachers hands, get rid of the tests, and see what our students actually know without the politicians or their appointees being involved.

tactfultina's picture
verified

The problem with education,

The problem with education, as I see it, is that the government is too involved with tying the teacher's hands and letting them actually teach. Too much time is spent trying to prepare for this set of tests or that set of tests because they are mandated by the government. The tests are not set up to be beneficial to the different types of learning styles the children have. I say take the tests away and let the teachers teach. Remember, some kids can pass a test and demonstrate proficiency in something but when it comes to applying that knowledge in a real world situation they cannot function. Then you have the kids that do not test well but if you let them show you how to do it in a simulated real life event they will shine. So my advice is to get government out of our schools and let the teachers do what they are trained to do...obviously our government officials are not good in math since they can't seem to balance a budget and constantly underestimate the needs of various departments of the state.

I had to go through the expense of a move to keep my child safe after he received a death threat from a Somali boy and the police claim they can't do anything because they can't prove that child was at the computer when the threat was made (and yes I do have proof) and yes I am angry and all I asked for was that the sunjournal tell the WHOLE story and not just the rosy stuff. And if that makes me a racist then so be it but until EVERYONE is treated equally in the eyes of the law NOTHING will change.

For those of you who have blinders on and think that all is rosy with the Somali population try really talking to them because even they will tell you there are problems because of the two different groups of Somalis here....the Somalis and the Somali Bantu.....take of the shades and see reality

And Jake....read the entire thing before you accuse me of racist stories....my point on this was to the sun journal and to tell the WHOLE story not just the rosy pieces of it. I gave specific examples and in my experience the bullies have been Somali children and I CAM BACK UP WHAT I SAY WITH PROOF....and if you also read the entire blog I said why not write about the young person who left Lewiston and came back and opened his/her own business. My point being.....this story is not newsworthy and it only shows one piece of the puzzle not the entire puzzle. And Jake I also lived in downtown Lewiston until I got my children out of there....It was older kids that were the problem there and yes most of them were white....however.....the kids in the incidents I spoke about were only elementary students and not very old.....they were at an age when the parents should have had control over them and didn't. And I truly believe that since my experience with the population is both positive and negative that I have the right to call sun journal on one sided story telling....Like i said....even the Somali population will tell you that there are 2 groups here and they do not get along.....and yet there is no mention of that in this article....and in my opinion...a newstory tells the WHOLE story not just a one sided version of the story.

try telling that to the

try telling that to the parents of the children that have been bullied by them....it is documented with housing and the police. talk to the people who moved out of Hillview. 20 Somali kids would attack one white child and we were told it is there word against yours and there are more of them. video tape of their behavior on the bus caused two-thirds of the bus to be suspended from riding the bus for a week because they made it unsafe for the driver and other children. they look at our rules and think it doesn't apply to them. I know of at least 12 incidents that were reported by one family to the police in the course of 1 year and I am sure there were many other. And these incidents all occurred in one area and involved the same children over and over. My point is this....I wish the sun journal would tell the WHOLE story and not just the rosy part of the story. What about telling how there are 2 populations of Somali here.....Somali and Somali Bantu and they don't even get along with each other. I have made friends with many Somali and even they will tell you there are problems within the Somali population. I would just like to see a complete report and not an edited report

Or maybe it would have been a better story if you had interviewed people who had lived in the same neighborhoods as the Somalis. Things are not as rosy as this story makes it out to be. Some of the Somali children have become bullies. They gang up on other children. They give bus drivers problems going to and from school. When you try to talk to the parents you get told they don't speak English. When you talk to the landlords you get told to go outside with your children to protect them. Don't just report the rosy good things but give a true picture of what is going on. How about reporting how, when going through Kennedy Park we are told to go around because it is theirs now. There is more to this then just the success story that is reported on. How about reporting on ALL the kids that graduate and not just the Somali kids.

I wasn't going to comment but

I wasn't going to comment but after thinking about this issue I have decided I need to comment. Whether we choose to accept Mr. Macdonald's apology is for each of us to decide. However, one thing is clear. Mr. Macdonald is our mayor-elect and we need to work together to get Lewiston through the next 2 years. If we do not agree with Mr. Macdonald there are ways to express that without causing a bigger rift within the city. Anyone that has followed the posts over the last week or so would know that I find Mr. Macdonald's way of articulating things less then tactful. People would also know that I, in no way, agree with Mr. Macdonald on many of his issues. We can choose to do one of three things....1) keep on bickering over every little thing....2) try to work as one team to create positive change for all citizens of Lewiston.....or 3) sit back and do absolutely nothing and leave it for another mayor in 2 years.

Whether we like Mr. Macdonald, his ideas, or his views isn't it best that we work as one for what is best for Lewiston????

I also agree that he never really answered any questions put to him in debates...his answers were vague or "I do not have enough information to answer that". There are issues that need to be addressed regarding people who receive assistance and issues that need to be addressed regarding people who do not receive assistance. The way to solve all of these issues is as one unit and not multiple groups of people who refuse to work together. David if you would actually

David if you would actually take the time to read all of my posts you would see that I have stated multiple times that NEITHER candidate was right for Lewiston. I do not disagree with ALL of Mcdonald's views but in the way he presents them. I also have stated multiple times that he would better serve us in a position that actually could change some of the things he is wanting to change. The mayor is just a ceremonial figurehead and I believe he would serve better in Augusta or Washington where he would actually have a vote not just a voice. And if you would actually read all of my posts you would have seen that I mentioned the incident with Mr. Raymond and what he went through when he tried to change things. And I never said we didn't need change...my view is that this election was a choice of same old same old or being bullied and threatened to get an agenda served. I have said many times there is a way to create change in this city and that is with EVERYONE working together as one. My opinion is that Mr. Macdonald is going to create more division between the citizens of this city because he cannot articulate his views TACTFULLY and cohesively. And as far as Bangor, Portland, Brunswick, and other Maine towns laughing at us that is there problem and they have their own issues but they don't have them in the spotlight constantly because their politicians do not constantly put their foot in their mouth. And you say the proper thing to do would have been for Paradis to withdraw from the election and concede it to Mr. Macdonald.....well the proper way for Macdonald to have won this election would have been for him to be gracious and not start off with threatening that things will happen on Thursday. I understand he is upset with being called a racist (maybe he shouldn't use words like "those people") and with alleged comments about his wife. To that I have this to say...you put yourself in the race so you better start growing a thicker skin if name calling bothers you that much. And for the record I have not seen or heard anything about his wife during this election so I would like to see where it was said and by whom. And now he IS the mayor-elect and maybe he should think about acting like it instead of bullying and threatening others.....

All of Mr. Macdonald's supporters should coach him on how to give an interview before he gives many more. And fyi...i saw the conversation on the sunjournal page while waiting for the results and one of the questions was along the lines of how to go about a recall in lewiston....and this was even before the results came out.....and for that matter if people are going to play the blame game why don't we put the blame where it belongs....on unfunded mandates from the federal government and the state government...

I sure won't be letting my son listen to him as he is not being a "good sportsman" at this time. And for the record.....I have always said that NEITHER candidate was right for Lewiston and that Mr. Macdonald would serve us better in either Augusta or Washington but then again I have no reason to know what Mr. Macdonald really thinks as it seems his supporters articulate better than he does. Mike.... If you had really

Mike....

If you had really read all of my posts you would see that I have said neither candidate is the right person for the job of mayor of this city. You would also see that I have said I agree with some of what Mr. Macdonald has said. I have also said that his views would create more change if he were in Augusta or Washington.

The thing that gets me is you really aren't comprehending anything I have written...almost like you want to argue because it makes you feel like you are a big person....What was it Mr. Macdonald said..."you aren't smart enough to read my words"...."you're not comprehending them".....

I think there is too many things that Mr. Macdonald would be better suited to fight in Augusta or Washington then in Lewiston. Do I think Mr. Paradis is the best candidate...NO. Do I think Mr. Macdonald is the best candidate for Lewiston....NO. Do I think things need to change...YES. Am I willing to work to help change things....YES, but only if this city can find a way to work as a team. There is already too much discord and distrust and misunderstanding...we do not need more of this. Am I angry...YES, but not for the reasons you think.

Which of the candidates said this....the mayor is only a ceremonial head and cannot propose things....Since this is the case how does Mr. Macdonald figure this is the best position for him to do the most for this city? Policy is set by the council not the mayor. Do you see my points that I have been trying to make???? Or do you still see it as I am attacking Mr. Macdonald?

tactfultina's picture

Mike I am one of the people

Mike

I am one of the people getting some assistance and I am NOT abusing the system. There are reasons I get help that are no one else's business. However, when you talk of abusers and people with their hands out I will take offense. And have you actually HEARD the words spoken by Mr. Macdonald.....I have...we don't need someone who is going to divide this city more than it already is. "The Somali girls are smart and want to learn, the others are just lazy"....wow talk about alienation. The problem is when people refuse to work together to change things. And I have been treated the way Mr. Macdonald is being treated because I do have ideas and when I have voiced my ideas in community meetings I have been told people do not want to hear them. So again I will say....use the words he means because he doesn't mean "welfare" change....he means a stop of the influx of the people who are draining our resources.....We had a mayor try to do that once and all he succeeded in doing was getting a bunch of grief from others. More still came....more will still come. Wouldn't it be better to make sure everyone knows exactly what he is talking about? Because I for one feel like I have been pushed aside by Mr. Macdonald and his supporters because they are not willing to open their minds and hear what the people who have no choice but to live with assistance have to say. We are the ones in the trenches. We are the ones who have no choice about where we go. We don't get to go home to a nice neighborhood every night. We live it night and day. Listen to what we are saying....we are on the street....we know where the problems are....some of us might even have ideas on how to solve things....but instead we just get called "those people", "lazy" and told to go back to where we came from or told to get out.....well I am where I came from....I am not lazy....I won't get out....and I am not those people.

tactfultina's picture

I think maybe Macdonald

I think maybe Macdonald supporters need to really listen to what Mr. Macdonald says....he is not talking about welfare as we all know it....he is talking about a particular group of people he feels is lazy and doing nothing but getting a free handout...I won't mention the group of people by name because that would start a whole new argument. But I will say this....Mr. Macdonald told Mr. Paradis that he(Mr. Paradis) was "not smart enough to read my(Mr. Macdonald) words" and "you're (Mr. Paradis) not comprehending them".....well if you really think that is what is going on then say what you actually mean. And before Mike goes on another tirade....yes I did watch the debate and yes it is an exact quote except for the names in parenthesis. So if Mr. Macdonald is being misunderstood maybe it would be in his best interest to actually use the words he means. And yes I will nitpick words because if you use welfare but mean handouts to a certain population then say that.....

tactfultina's picture
verified

I know most won't want to

I know most won't want to hear this but I will say it anyway. The law is the law for all who are here whether they are natural born or immigrant or displace refugee. That is the way this country works. The police officer did his job. Driving that area is already difficult because of the amount of traffic on the road and the traffic pattern. Anything in the road makes it just that more of a hazard for all in the area at the given time.

To those that are making comments about the hard working individuals....I was at a local business on Lisbon St. yesterday when two men walked in to send $10,000 home and they were not sending it to some place in the United States.

Our economy is in dire need and yet people are making money here, whether it be through hard work or entitlement programs and not spending the money here....they are sending it elsewhere. Makes a person stop and think doesn't it?

tactfultina's picture
verified

I wasn't going to comment but

I wasn't going to comment but then I actually got a chance to watch the debate. One of the things that struck me is Mr. Macdonald actually said "you're not smart enough to read my words", "you're not comprehending them". Well get this....you have to actually use the words you mean when you speak so people will understand. Now that I have watched the actual debate I have learned one thing....Mr. Macdonald doesn't mean welfare as the rest of us know it; he means a particular population.....

His main agenda is a moratorium on section 8 housing and if he can accomplish that he will go back to retirement....(his words not mine) and yet he made a comment earlier in the debate that he has heard from one councilor that he (the councilor) will not seek another term and Mr. Macdonald then asked so why run this time......talk about hypocritical.

So my last question is this.....does anyone know how I can reach Mr. Macdonald as I have some questions for him and would like to hear his answers to them?

tactfultina's picture
verified

After reading the comments

After reading the comments and responding to some of them I have come to the conclusion that some will just never get it. Whether we agree with Mr. Macdonald or not one thing is painfully obvious....there is a right way and a wrong way to create change. There is a unified way to come up with solutions to the problems and a divided way to come up with solutions. If we have learned one thing over the years it is this....WE MUST WORK AS AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.....if you go around alienating parts of a population then all you succeed in doing is dividing this city.

Here is another thing programs are not the problem...people are the problem....saying that welfare is the biggest problem is like my son saying his bad grades are the school's fault instead of his....it's like saying the Christmas tree is the reason my light bill is high...things don't cause problems PEOPLE CAUSE PROBLEMS. Until we change people nothing gets solved.

Yes Mr. Macdonald and his supporters are angry....so am I but I will NOT let my anger dictate how I see things. Anger is nothing but an emotion that leads to bad reactions.

Why can't people see that? Why can't people see that reaction is never a good solution to problems? Why is it that a few "bad apples" make an entire population look bad? And why is it that people just can't open their eyes and see that NO ONE PERSON OR GROUP OF PEOPLE have the solutions if they alienate all other groups of people.

Wilma I do get the point. I

Wilma I do get the point. I am not saying there are not abuses to the system. I am not saying there doesn't need to be reform. I am saying that the percentage of those that have made a lifetime of living on welfare is small in comparison to those that have used the system for the "helping hand" it was meant to be. I am saying that the problems for this city are more than just the "welfare" problems. I am saying that the place to change the welfare system is in Augusta and Washington not at the local level.

I am outraged at some of what goes on but my point is that anger isn't going to change anything. We are a city that needs to be one and not separate. We need to work as a team to create change. Here is a suggestion....Catholic Charities brought the recent "displaced refugees" to this city and got them settled with housing and assistance. Maybe the "city" government needs to hold Catholic Charities responsible for the "displaced refugees". Maybe the "city" needs to work with Augusta to change how the "displaced refugees" are helped.

I am outraged to think that our elected officials do not take a stand to make our federal government responsible for helping the "displaced refugees" instead of putting the burden on our local tax payers. However, I learned a long time ago that being PROACTIVE is better than being REACTIVE.

Do I think things need to change? YES YES YES. But in order to make things change and be better for all we need to work together and not play the blame game. Set up a committee of residents to come up with solutions to our problems that include all class levels, all educational levels, all levels of our work force, etc.

And for the record, I do agree with Mr. Macdonald on some things. However, I feel his agenda (or plan or platform) would be better in Augusta or Washington instead of at the local level where we really have no say in how DHHS or MSH works.

I know first hand that the current influx does not intend on becoming part of this community and our way of life. It outrages me that we are expected to accept their way of life when they won't accept our way of life. But angry reactions do not solve the problems and isn't that what we are all trying to do. It's how we do it that is going to make the solutions work or fail.

Again the point is lost.

Again the point is lost. Where are the numbers of the actual people using the "welfare" as a way of life? Do you realize that there are time limits and requirements to receive "welfare"? Most people get "welfare" for only a short period of time. Those that get it for longer have "good cause". Again, the choice of words is the issue. Welfare is what you get through DHHS and includes financial assistance, food stamps, and MaineCare. Housing assistance is what you receive through the Maine State Housing Authority. There is a big difference between assistance and welfare. Words have to be chosen carefully. And to blame "Welfare" as a major contributing factor facing downtown Lewiston is incorrect. It is not the fault of "welfare". It is the result of people who either don't care, have given up, or don't have the knowledge of how to make changes i.e. lack of education which our failing school system is not helping.

However, downtown Lewiston is only a piece of the puzzle. Lewiston encompasses many neighborhoods not just "downtown" Lewiston. When people get off the turnpike in Lewiston they do not suddenly appear in "downtown" Lewiston. They arrive in the city of Lewiston. If Lewiston only encompasses the "downtown" area then where do the rest of us live.....do we have a different zip code?

If you want to solve the problems of this city then you have to involve the entire city. You have to bring ALL of us together and not pit one section of the city against the others.

Remember another thing....there was a time when people wouldn't go to Little Canada but now that area has welfare recipients as well as subsidized housing. There is welfare and subsidized housing off Sabattus Street. There is welfare and subsidized housing off Main Street. This is the city of Lewiston and not the city of "Downtown" Lewiston. Word choice is important and that is the lesson people need to learn if they want to be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.

Again it seems the point is

Again it seems the point is lost Mike. Mr. Macdonald wants to make changes in welfare. THAT IS NOT THE MAYORS JOB. He would better serve the residents of Lewiston in Augusta or Washington not in local government. And my grandmother once told me that you can catch more flies with honey instead of vinegar. Words do mean alot. When you alienate an entire group of people because you don't choose your words carefully then you become part of the problem and not a part of the solution. And a person cannot lead when he is part of the problem. Haven't we learned yet....when you are constantly having to defend your position because you "misspoke" or "put your foot in your mouth" then you are not solving or leading anything. I would love to sit down with Mr. Macdonald and actually have a discussion but he needs to be more "tactful" in his choice of words because all he is going to accomplish is causing more discord not change.

Let's take the time to look

Let's take the time to look at this unbiasedly....Mr. Paradis has some good ideas that have been tried time and time again. Mr. Macdonald is making promises that can not me kept at the local level. They are BOTH wrong for this city. We need fresh blood in our local offices that can see the problems, work as a team play to create solutions to the problems, and can be the "face" of Lewiston that the residents can be proud of. They both have presented what they want to accomplish while in office....neither have presented their goals for many of the issues important to most of us....what will they do about our failing school system, how are we going to bring this community together, how are we going to keep our tax base lower without hurting those that depend on services out of necessity not choice.

Now let's look at a few other things....Mr. Paradis is basically status quo....Mr. Macdonald wants to use the "bully pulpit" to create change...Mr. Paradis has been in local government before.....Mr. Macdonald has not served in public office but has been a public servant....

What do I want to teach our children....to stand up for themselves, to work hard, to be the best they can be, to get along with others even if they disagree, to think before they speak, and to be a team player.

This is a scary election for many reasons...we either get more of the same or we get scared into reacting instead of proacting. We get soft spoken old ideas that haven't worked or we get bullied into fighting each other over ideas that CANNOT be implemented at the local level.

The one thing this election has done for this city....it has started a dialog of the people to hear multiple sides of the things on our minds. The one thing it has not done is create an air of let's work together as one to create change.

Neither candidate is the right person to lead Lewiston. In fact, this years entire pool of candidates were not right for Lewiston. We need new blood, we need new energy, we need new ideas, we need to be creative not destructive. We need to live for the future without going back to the past. We need candidates who will actually get out and talk with ALL residents of Lewiston, not just family, friends, and comfortable neighborhoods. We need to work with our local businesses and not against them, we need to work with our residents not against them, we need to put personal biases aside and become one. This is suppose to be a city with diverse cultures and beliefs. It's time we act like a city not a group of individuals with differing agendas.

You are obviously a Macdonald supporter. Good for you. However, regardless of who any of us support there is one thing this city DOES need and that is a mayor who knows his job, can bring change, doesn't discriminate against an entire class of people, and has an attitude the allows people to want to work with him. I have yet to say anything about Mr. Paradis, but I guess maybe I should just to be fair. His views are certainly more of the same old same old and isn't what this city needs either. But, given that we only have two options at this point, he is the lesser of the two evils who isn't going to start a "class" war with his words. I do admire that Mr. Macdonald tries to "tell it like it is" but he is doing so without apparently having all the facts. If you want to stir up things then maybe you should have all your facts, be able to answer direct questions and not defer your answers because you don't have enough information. You should also know where you can best effect change and I think that what myself and Claire have said is that he is not suited for the job as mayor with his particular platform. The kind of change he wants would make him a better candidate for Augusta or Washington not Lewiston.

Although I agree with some of your comments there are some I would not agree with. If you look at those actually receiving assistance of some sort, the majority of the US citizens are NOT lazy and using the system as a way of life but as a means of survival. There is a small percentage that will abuse the system and I have no problem with stopping that abuse. However, when people make comments about subsidized housing, welfare, Section 8, and poor people they seem to group all of us together. If others have a problem with the few that abuse the system then state that. If others have a problem with "Immigrants", "visitors", and "displaced refugees" receiving assistance then state that. Do not put us all in one group. Mr. Macdonald appears to be angry with ALL who receive assistance in some form and that is NOT what this city needs. This city needs to be able to work as one to create solutions to the problems not create more rivalries. I agree the displace refugees are a large group receiving assistance, sometimes to the detriment of the US citizens. As I stated in previous comments, it took me 3 years to receive any housing assistance and where I moved to was 70% displaced refugees. I took my housing assistance and moved to another neighborhood where the majority of the residents are elderly, disabled, or young families trying to start their lives. There is much about my situation that I did not put into my earlier comment and I will not put it in here. The one thing I know is this, regardless of how I personally feel about welfare, housing assistance, and the situations of the "poor", it is my opinion that since Mr. Macdonald clearly cannot contain his anger and refers to the "poor" as "those people" he is clearly not the person this city needs to solve the problems. As well, the job description of the mayor has nothing to do with welfare reform and since the only thing I have heard from Mr. Macdonald is how he will change welfare in this city he obviously does not belong in local government. Maybe he would be better suited for Augusta or Washington if welfare is what he wishes to change. I just hope that if Mr. Macdonald does become mayor of this city that he doesn't hurt the programs for the people who really need the assistance, the elderly, the veterans, and the disabled not to mention the children of this city. Putting a moratorium on any type of housing assistance will directly impact this group of people. And if you allow this group to receive assistance then the other groups will use that great big "D" word that everyone is so scared of. Maybe a better way to create change is to fix our schools that are consistently failing to meet standards; maybe bringing businesses that actually pay a living wage to this city will change things; maybe stopping the blame game and creating a group that work as a TEAM would change things. The other thing I do know is this....UNTIL ANY PERSON WALKS A MILE IN MY SHOES OR AN ELDERLY PERSON'S SHOES THEN GROUPING US ALL IN THE GROUP BEING CALLED LAZY AND SYSTEM ABUSERS is NOT going to bring this city together and create change that will make this a place people are proud to live in and call HOME.

Unfortunately, I was unable

Unfortunately, I was unable to watch the debate last night as I was busy helping my son with homework and being a parent. However, I did read the story and the chat from last night. There seems to be a lot of discussion involving welfare and section 8. There really didn't seem to be much on how to solve the problems this city is facing. Mr. Macdonald needs to walk a mile in my shoes or the shoes of anyone who is struggling to survive because there are no jobs here let alone jobs that are family friendly (by this I mean there are no jobs that work with families of special needs children...flexible scheduling, ability to miss work multiple days because of issues with the children). I will say that I do receive assistance because my son has medical, behavioral, and mental health issues due to a birth defect. It really bothers me that people lump all poor people into one group. Come walk a mile in my shoes. Do you really think I chose this way of life? Do you really think I wouldn't rather have a child who is healthy and not in constant need of help? Do you really think I enjoy having to be home to work with the professionals that come into my home to help my son and myself learn to overcome the obstacles he faces every day? Do you have a plan to bring business to Lewiston that will work with families like mine? Do you have a plan to bring child care to this city that will accept a child like mine? There are a few bad apples receiving assistance that give all of us a bad reputation and there always will be. But I noticed many commented on the anger Mr. Macdonald has as a driving force, and if you think anger is what this city needs then I have all the anger any one would want. I am angry that everything is put on the backs of the poor as if we choose to be poor. I am angry that my son has problems that he was born with (an no I have never done drugs that were not prescribed by a doctor). I am angry I have to battle every day just to get what Mainecare won't pay for. I am sorry that people misuse the system. I am sorry that some do not want to work. But I resent the fact that anyone would lump all poor people in one group. Not all of us receive assistance by choice but by necessity. Don't blame us but work with us to bring jobs to this city that would work with us and around our children.

It seems to me that this is

It seems to me that this is again an example of let's play the blame game instead of working as one to find a solution to the problems. Are there problems with the system? Yes. Are there problems in how programs in this state are run? Yes. Are there solutions to these problems? Probably but not until we all stop blaming others and working together. Maybe it's time to get rid of the party system in this state and change the rules to say that if you do not do your job without using the blame game then you will be removed from that job/office without cause. It seems that politicians are focusing on programs that help the poor, the disabled, the people who rely on mental health services and those that need help for whatever the reason. I say that before any politician is allowed to run for office then that person needs to walk in the shoes of the people in the above categories. Let's see if that changes their tune some. I would love to see someone in politics live on the $674 that a disabled person gets each month, including paying bills in full, paying for medications, paying for necessities, paying for food and not getting help when they need it because there are no funds for the programs. Maybe there is mismanagement of money in the programs but the solution will NOT be found blaming someone else. The solution will only be found when we work together as a team.

It seems to me that Mr.

It seems to me that Mr. Macdonald doesn't have a clue as to what a mayor's job is. He has consistently targeted the poor of Lewiston to show the rich that he is on their side. Subsidized housing isn't the issue, welfare reform isn't the mayors job, he doesn't have a say in how the food stamp program is implemented or what is allowed to be purchased with food stamps. He should be telling us how he intends to bring businesses to the city that would hire people, he should be telling us how he intends to better the city by enforcing the codes and laws, he should be telling us how he intends to handle the issues to bring this community together as one, and he should stop putting the blame on one class of people. I lived downtown, in a non-subsidized apartment, which took almost all of my income to pay my rent. The building was full of lead, the bathroom was falling down around us, the floors were like a roller coaster, the windows would not open....if the apartment had been subsidized maybe it would have been safer for me to raise my children there as someone would have been there to oversee what my landlord was doing with all the money he was making. It took me 3 years to get a subsidized apartment and have a safe home for my children. Another issue Mr. Macdonald should be talking about is education...he claims to be a former teacher in our school system and has put the blame on lazy students who are not willing to work. How would he fix our failing schools? It seems like every issue Mr. Macdonald talks about is the fault of the poor of this community. My one piece of advice for Mr. Macdonald is to stop the blame game and start talking about what you brind to the table as solutions but keep in mind just what it is a mayor does...maybe if you want welfare reform you should run for a seat in Augusta or Washington instead of for local government.

I agree that Pettingill

I agree that Pettingill school would be ideal but it shoud house the pre- kindergarten children and not the seniors. Many seniors cannot get out to college street but they can get to the Multi-Purpose Center. Busing the students to the Multi-Purpose Center would create more traffic congestion in the downtown area then the area can handle. Has anyone looked at why we have such an increase in the student population? Has anyone looked at getting resources to help defray the costs of educating an immigrant population that this city was ill-equipped to deal with? Has anyone asked the parents of these young children how they would feel to have their children bussed to an area that doesn't have a great reputation for safety or even cleanliness for that matter? I think the city and the school department needs to take a good long look at several issues. I also think the school department needs to take a look at other schools as well. For example, Martel 5th graders are still housed in modular classrooms and have been for too long. My daughter was in the modular classrooms at Martel and is now a junior in college and last year my son was in those same modular classrooms. As much as I would like to see everyone able to put their child in a pre-kindergarten classroom, there are programs that serve that age group, Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care for one, but we are currently not serving our older school children in a way that they need or deserve. Just look at test scores and I say focus on the older children and let the other programs do what they were started to do.

In 2008 many of us fought the No Child Left Behind Act because we saw what it would do before it was even enacted. No one wanted to hear our views then and now everyone sees that this legislation is, in fact, leaving many of our children behind. One news channel asked what we thought would help improve schools in Maine....my response...get government out of our schools. The government is failing in many areas and seems to be more interested in bickering, supporting other countries, and media coverage for their special interests. It's time for the citizens of this country to take control back and let us make decisions on the local levels to meet the needs of our citizens and especially our children. My child has attended three schools in Lewiston and in the first two he did not get the help he needed because the teachers were too busy trying to meet the needs of the No Child Left Behind Act. In the third school he has made excellent gains. The difference....the ELL students are fewer at this school then at the first two. It's time to really take a look at the whole issue and not just pieces of the issue. Drastic changes need to take place. My daughter graduated from the Lewiston School System and to this day still needs "mom" to read her papers before she turns them in and make corrections because she didn't learn the ways to do that before she graduated. It's sad when children go off to college and still can't write correctly.

Are the students at Longley the same ones that weren't meeting standards when the government grant was applied for? Well it looks like Governor

Well it looks like Governor Lepage now has a choice to make....either pay back money or put back the mural. Does this man ever consider the consequences to his actions or words? After reading the article written by Republican Senators in the Portland Press Herald, it seems to me that many people are upset with the apparently disrespectful way Governor LePage is doing things. Maine people are not "idiots", and our governor seems to thrive on conflict and confrontation. Is this the way we want our state perceived by others? I know I don't.

Tourism happens to be business. Business that this state sorely needs. Whether the business be in the tourism industry or any other industry, this state cannot afford to lose the money it brings to us. It appears that not only is Governor LePage alienating labor but is alienating businesses as well. And before you tell me to monitor the bills, the bills mean absolutely nothing until the legislature votes on them and the governor signs them. While some of them may be beneficial to the state there is no guarantee that any of them will pass and become law. However, what is a guarantee is that everyone is spending more time discussing the "foot in the mouth" of the moment and not doing what this state needs to have done. This article is about setting up a way to recall elected officials that are not doing their jobs in the eyes of the people who elected them. I believe we have this right and should have a way of calling to recall someone.

The media did not create the mess of the mural. The Governor did by handling it the way he did. As far as the media goes, I do agree that it is one-sided in many instances and does not always report news unbiasedly. However, if the Governor didn't give them the ammunition they would have no choice but to report on the bills, budget, and other items of concern for this state.

Mark you seem to think you

Mark you seem to think you have an answer for everything. Unfortunately it seems that you and I have different opinions. Bills in Augusta mean nothing until the legislature votes on them. I don't believe everything the media says nor would I, but I live in the real world. The governor wants to reform welfare and some of his ideas are good but some are bad and in my opinion, Governor LePage is not interested in hearing what real people who have received assistance have to say. He appears to be looking at a few bad apples and labeling everyone. He wants to eliminate red tape for business and that is a good thing, however, if he keeps making choices that show the world he will put his foot in his mouth, he will be alienating the business world. Follow the social networking sites and see what others are saying about Maine. Maine has always been a high taxation state and yet he wants to give tax breaks to the richest and take things away from the working class. Businesses do NOT care about murals when they are deciding where to open. They care about the taxes it will cost them, the work force they have to choose from, and the ability to make money. As far as the Governor being in contact with his office every day...it is my understanding that he isn't even leaving until Sunday. And in none of the times I listened to the campaign talks did I hear Governor LePage state he had a planned vacation. I used to think he was what Maine needed. I used to think it was refreshing to him "tell it like it is". But I also believe the Governor of our state should be a role model to ALL people and not just the inner circle. Now I am afraid to let my son listen to the Governor any time he speaks because I am afraid of what will come out of his mouth next. That is NOT who I want representing my state. And I have spoken to many people who have supported Governor LePage and they feel the same way...he is NOT who anyone thought he was. While I appreciate that he has a difficult job to do and that this state is in desperate need for change, I also know that how he makes (or attempts to make) changes for Maine is just as important as the changes he is trying to make. I also know that the way he has handled things up to now would not be tolerated in the business world if he were the employee. At this time he is an EMPLOYEE of the people of the State of Maine and should be acting accordingly.

Mark in my opinion Governor

Mark in my opinion Governor LePage is NOT listening to the people. He is taking from the poor to give to the rich. He is hiring his daughter for a job that should have been open to the entire state and she should have had to compete with others qualified for the job. He says removing the mural is because it's against business when in actuality businesses don't come to Maine because of the high taxes. He says state jobs are just that and if Marden's is open then the state is open.....well the state wasn't open today and they were cancelled even before most schools cancelled. Tourism is a big business in this state and yet when I watch television late at night I see is a mockery being made of our Governor, that is a real big incentive to visit this state.....NOT. And now he is going on vacation after 3 months on the job....you tell me what job in this state or the country for that matter lets an employee take a "paid" vacation after only 3 months. And could you tell me who is paying for the security that is going to be provided by the Jamaican government? If Governor LePage was truly interested in the problems in this state he would be staying in Maine at this time and working with the legislature on the budget and solving other problems in this state. I will not support any politician publicly until they show me that he/she is doing what they were elected to do and at this point I do not believe Governor LePage is doing that. What's the old adage....if you want respect you have to earn respect...

This would be a first and

This would be a first and it's sad that Governor LePage has not listened to the people of Maine. We elected him to do a job and he seems to be more interested in menial things, name calling, and taking vacations. And speak of his vacation, his staff has arranged for the Jamaican government to provide security at whose expense? and for what reason? I think the people of Maine deserve a process for recalling their elected officials. We put them in office and we should be able to remove them from office without waiting until the next election. This state cannot take an official for a full term when they do not seem to be interested in doing the job we elect them to do. Governor LePage should know that going on vacation in this economy with the work that still needs to be done is not only wrong but irresponsible.

Can someone tell me what job

Can someone tell me what job gives vacation time after only 3 months on it? As far as I am concerned Governor LePage ran for the position of Governor because he wanted the JOB. If he is not willing to treat the position as a full time job then maybe we should find someone willing to actually do the job. Between the vacation, the removal of a mural, and not being tactful in how he says things what has he actually accomplished as Governor. It's about time for some serious thought by the Governor as to whether he can actually DO the job or if he just wants the so-called prestige of the position. As taxpayers, we are paying his salary. And as taxpayers maybe we should look at firing him from the position.

It's about time the judicial

It's about time the judicial system started putting their foot down when it comes to sentences people receive. Maybe if people had to face the consequences for their actions they would be more apt to make good choices and not bad. As far as this woman goes, if she gets that impatient waiting to pick up her children from a school how is she with them at home. If she can run over another person's child and hit multiple vehicles in her impatience then what is she doing when her children act up at home. She is also charged with driving with an expired learner's permit...how many laws will she be allowed to break before she has to face the real consequences for her actions. The fact that she happens to be Somali should not make a difference. It's about time ALL people who live in this state start obeying the laws of this state and accepting the consequences for their actions. Maybe then we can get the youth of today under control. And just a quick observation......how long before this woman and her lawyer claim the judge is discriminating because she is Somali????

I think this state has bigger

I think this state has bigger problems to worry about. The Governor should stop wasting time on things that don't matter and start focusing on things that would help the people of this state. Maine is not a business friendly state and it's not because of a mural, it's because there is too much red tape and taxes are too high for business. To me the Department of Labor, where the mural was hung, represents the working people of Maine not the businesses. I really wish Governor LePage would start focusing more on things that would make a difference to the people of Maine and not spend so much time on things that will not make one bit of difference in people's lives. Here are some suggestions for the Governor....fix education so are children have a chance in this world, stop taking from the poor and middle classes and giving to the rich, don't hire family for jobs that should be advertised and open to the BEST qualified candidate, cut taxes for the lower and middle classes, and if need be raise the taxes for the richest, cut out the red tape that people have to go through to open a business, go to school, or get a job. I am seriously doubting whether Maine people can go through 4 more years of worrying about murals.

We have and are raising a

We have and are raising a generation of children who for some reason feel they are entitled to do what they want, when they want and how they want and don't think they have to face the consequences of their actions. So many children today threaten to call the police or report parents to DHS for child abuse. I feel it is time that we take a look at our parenting and start taking responsibility for the way we have raised our children. For years we were told not to spank our children because it was abuse and to use time outs as consequences. Well it's sad but I believe it's time we go back to the old school. Spanking a child's butt is not abuse. Taking away tv, movies, games, and other activities are not abuse but a natural consequence for a child's action. It's time this generation of children learn that there are rules for everything and consequences for their actions. In this day of computers, cell phones, and other devices, we need to be aware of what are children are doing at all time. Do you realize that as parents we are financially responsible for our children and their actions until they are 24? As far as threats made on the computer, its a daily occurrence and in most cases the police do not do anything about threats made on social networking sites. This I know from experience as my son received a death threat in September and nothing has come of it except that I moved my family to keep my 10 year old safe. To Dax's mother....stay strong and support your son as he will have a long road to recovery but also make sure you stand up for his rights and dont let the threats that turned into a reality go unnoticed. To Dax.....as hard as it may be you have to work diligently so that you can recover from this horrendous attack. Things may look bleak at times and you may struggle to overcome the emotions and pain but it is possible. My thoughts and prayers are with this family. As far as the attacker goes....he isn't worth my time.

If this bill were to pass then the state would in fact be discriminating against an entire group of people. Not only that, if the state is so concerned about smokers and their health care costs then they could use the outrageous cigarette taxes to pay for the medical bills of smokers. The state had a settlement from the tobacco companies to help pay for medical bills, stop smoking aids, and education about the use of tobacco but where did that go??? MaineCare refuses treatment aids to help people stop smoking. If a doctor recommends one aid and its not on the accepted treatment list a person has to jump through hoops to just get denied the treatment recommended by their doctor. My question is when did the governor or other elected officials become medical professionals??? And if we are going to continue to discriminate against smokers then could someone tell me why my tax dollars are going to support people that have baby after baby after baby and yet refuse to learn how to speak English? Could someone tell me why my tax dollars are being spent on an education system that has an entire city school system failing to meet the educational standards? Could someone tell me why my tax dollars are giving tax breaks to businesses that refuse to let white Americans enter their establishments? I think Maine has bigger problems then whether smokers should lose their health benefits if they have state funded insurance.

Report fighting?????

This article is almost funny. Report fighting???? To who???? Police who ask the complainant what we expect them to do???? Landlords when we see property being damaged???? I think we need to have better resources to deal with ALL children not just the Somali children. Talk about going back to segregation. Maybe if these "Somali" soccer teams were open to ALL children we could encourage better relationships between the cultures. Maybe then we could stop the bullying, threatening, name calling, assaults, and everything else that is wrong with the youth of today. I know of many children on these soccer teams who were reported for bullying others...still they played. Wouldn't it have been great to have one of the adult coaches force them to play with the victim of the bullying???? Or maybe make the person doing the bullying sit and watch while the victim actually played on the team???? It gets to be old news when we read about the "good" Somali adults are doing with their own population but what about doing good with ALL populations. We don't get to hear about all white teams that keep the children out of trouble because that would be discrimination. White people can't refuse to let a Somali child play on a team but no effort is being made to include white children on Somali teams...talk about a double standard. Remember hate and discrimination go both ways and its time to stop the segregation that Martin Luther King fought so hard to stop so many years ago. We do not need to go back to the past but rather strive for an equal resolution for today's youth.

Take a minute

Take a minute to realize a few "hard" truths....the Somali's were brought here by Catholic Charities and left with no resources in this city to handle them. A few years ago the mayor asked for them to stop the influx in order for the city to get a handle on what resources were needed to assist the immigrants in adapting to this new culture and to assist the native population in understanding the Somali culture. He was attacked in the press for his letter just asking for time in order to help make adjustments easier all the way around. Somali parents did not learn the American ways as quickly as their children and in many instances Americans had to rely on the children to interpret for them when communicating with the adults. There was a lack of interpreters and still is to help with the language barrier. In some cases the children didn't interpret accurately (especially if it was because they had done something wrong). This led to many hard feelings between adults of both immigrants and natives. As far as the adults learning English and using it...there are many courses that teach the English language to the Somali population at no charge but there are no courses that I have been able to find to teach the Somali language to Americans. It has appeared over the years that the Somali people have received special consideration in many areas and that has also led to animosity between cultures. There are many Somali adults who would like to succeed in this country and many Americans who would like to see them succeed. I am one person who should be upset with the Somali population being here. My son has been threatened, bullied, attacked, chased, and called names by some of the Somali children. However, my concern isn't how my son was treated, my concern is what is becoming of this nation's children when parents are afraid to discipline their children out of fear of the "system", when the juvenile detention system is so overwhelmed it has to pick and choose who to charge and who to send to another organization for help, when police look at us and say "what do you want us to do about it", and when our schools are so overwhelmed by the numbers of non English speaking students that they can't take the time to actually teach our children what they need to know in order to not be a failing school in this state. Maybe we all need to take a hard look at these things and stop the name calling, the throwing of accusations of racism and bigotry, and maybe we need to find a part of the solution instead of putting the blame on one group of people or another.

Well this is the 2nd article

Well this is the 2nd article on community policing/action groups....one for PVA and one for the complex formally known as Tall Pines....There have also been many meetings at Hillview in which the meetings become accusatory or a gripe session. The tenants do not get along, the police cannot control the meetings, and issues are not really addressed. The police would like to include the residents of Rideout Avenue as some issues involve them as well. As good an idea as this may sound, a lot of work needs to be done within Hillview, as well as other apartment complexes, before surrounding areas are included. One of the major road blocks is lack of communication because of a language barrier. There are also many cultural differences that need to be addressed. Just because it is my belief that my child not be allowed to run wherever he may want to, doesn't mean that is the way other parents choose to raise their children. However, as parents, we are all responsible for our children's actions and they need to realize there are consequences to their actions. Until the housing projects can deal with the issues within each project, there will be no resolution to any of the issues facing residents of housing projects or their surrounding neighborhoods. Maybe the state and/or the federal government should be throwing their money towards educating people as to what is expected of them. Catholic Charities brought a large number of refugees to this country and yet where is Catholic Charities now, certainly not dealing with the disrespect, rudeness, opinions of entitlement, or bullying that is currently a major issue within this city. We all need to get along but that gets more difficult with each passing day when some seem to think the world owes them or that they can do whatever they choose to with no consequences. And maybe instead of everyone being on different pages they should try getting everyone on the same page...i.e. all police officers doing the same thing, all landlords being consistent, and all residents knowing what is expected and what the consequences will be for not doing what they are suppose to do.

Big daddy, I am a parent who

Big daddy, I am a parent who signed one of those releases. My daughter was on the first flight. In fact her group has switched with the group involved in the crash. It could very easily have been her in the crash. My daughter is one of them that talked to the NTSB, she is one of them that talked to Col. Meyer after the second flight took off. She has been haunted for 3 years because of it. She has been hounded by others because of it. She was there, she knows what went on, she lives with it every day of her life. By dragging this all on no one is getting on with their lives. And if the people who really knew the cadets involved they would know that blaming Colonel Meyer, the school, or the city is the LAST thing any of them would have wanted. Put the blame and responsibility where the NTSB did....PILOT ERROR. And as far as releases, we all sign them for our children to do lots of things that could be dangerous so if my daughter is now involved in a car accident do I go back to the driving school and sue them for not teaching her right? I don't think so.
