Stantec have been the so-called expert consultants for most wind projects in the northeast and always find that there will be no adverse impacts to wildlife.
Adam Gravel, of Stantec, testified in the VT PSB hearing for the Lowell mtn wind project, that he wasn't concerned about the cumulative impact to birds and bats from the proliferation of wind projects.
The Stantec consultants are paid to say what their clients, the wind industry, want them to say. They have no credibility.
Bird and bat fatalities are kept from the public and vastly under reported by wind industry consultants like Stantec.
Birds, bats and wildlife have a better chance of adapting to climate change than adapting to the adverse impacts of industrial scale wind projects.
In the northeast and much of the US there's an oversupply of generation. Demand is down due to conservation, efficiency and the recession. We don't need to be building new generation; especially expensive, intermittent, environmentally destructive industrial scale wind projects.
The folly of wind power is apparent when one looks at the
transmission gridlock in Orrington, ME. First Wind built the Stetson projects and then a 40 mile transmission line to Orrington. Two base load generators, a pooling hydro and a gas plant, are also transmitting power to the grid from Orrington resulting in an over supply on the transmission line to the NE grid from Orrington. Wind power, when available, is given transmission preference and the base load generators, who sold their output in the day ahead market, are backed down or curtailed, but they are still paid for the power they contracted to provide in the day ahead market even though they are not putting that power on the grid. So the ratepayers are paying for the surplus, unneeded, wind power as well as the power the base load generators are paid for but not generating.
These costs and the costs of transmission built for wind projects are going to soon be felt by ratepayers.
Building inefficient, environmentally destructive generation that we don't even need in the name of creating jobs or saving the world from global warming is ludicrous.
It would be preferable to pay people to dig holes and others to fill them in rather than pay subsidy sucking parasite wind developers to destroy our mountains, wildlife and human habitat.
Where are the benefits for anyone but the developers, leaseholders, and their hedge fund and foreign investors?
Anyone reponding that industrial wind will cut emissions, please provide examples.

Trans Canada has asked VT towns to lower appraisals on hydro dams they own on the Connecticut River, claiming, in a 3/11/10 VPR story, "I mean the plants are obviously worth less today than they were pre recession and pre-oversupply of electricity." http://vpr.net/news_detail/87443/ In light of this oversupply of electricity, someone needs to ask Trans Canada: If there's an oversupply of electricity, and Trans Canada is trying to control costs, why expand the Kibby Mtn wind plant?
No amount of 500 foot, loud, strobe lit, environmentally destructive industrial wind turbines on Sisk Mtn or anywhere else will have any affect on particulate matter in the air, as no form of fossil fuel generation is shut down as a result of wind factories.
No amount of loud, ugly, 400+ foot wind turbines will stop oil spills, coal burning or lower emissions. If you think wind turbines create jobs or lower emissions look at how bad the European economy is after building tens of thousands of turbines. There is nowhere in the world that wind turbines have lowered emissions, shut down any fossil fuel generation or lived up to any of the bogus claims of snake oil wind developers. It's all about collecting subsidies, grants and tax credits.
Besides the pollution from steel making, consider also the pollution created in transporting the tons of huge heavy towers, blades, nacelles, transformers, cement, rebar, wires, etc.
Consider also the loss of pollution absorbtion of the thousands of acres of forest being cut for turbines and associated road networks.
Mountain top destruction for ineffiecient wind turbines destroys wildlife and wildlife habitat, headwater streams and wetlands, property values and enjoyment of one's property, and kills birds and bats. Tranmission lines built for wind developers will have more adverse environmental impacts.
Wind developers and their political allies have been making their false claims of lowering emissions, creating jobs, ending dependence on oil, and energy independence for far too long. Kurt Adams is undoubtedly not the only Maine gov't official that has received money and "contributions" from First Wind and other sleazy wind developers.

Their former partners have been arrested for fraud, for collecting subsidies from wind plants that produced little or nothing. They've been investigated for bribing local officials. In a VT Public Radio news story on March 12, 2010, regarding Trans Canada asking for a reappraisal of the hydro dams they own on the Connecticut River,Cleve Kapala, of TransCanada said, "I mean the plants are obviously worth less today than they were pre recession and pre-oversupply of electricity." ( http://vpr.net/news_detail/87443/ ) Why then, if Trans Canada knows there's an oversupply of electricity and is asking for a lower appraisal on their dams, are they simultaneously applying to expand their industrial wind plant on Kibby Mtn in Maine?
Due to the recession, conservation and efficiency there is lower demand for electricity. there is currently a glut of power in the New England market. The price of natural gas and wholesale price of electricity are lower than they've been in years and are predicted to remain low for the forseeable future. So the question must be asked, why do we need to destroy Maine's mountains with inefficient, unreliable industrial scale wind turbines? The obvious answer is, to collect subsidies, tax credits, double accelerated depreciation, renewable energy certificates, and now direct grants, paid with our tax dollars, and our grandchilren's tax dollars. This is what industrial wind "development" is really all about. Without these incentives, which we can ill afford, no one would consider building these useless monuments to gullibility, stupidity and greed.
Maine Audubon Society, the Natural Resources Council of Maine and the Appalachian Mountain Club and most so-called environmental organizations are serving the corporate interest from whom they get their funding. Trans Canada probably had no intention of putting turbines on Sisk Mtn but did so only to give MNRC an opportunity to finally oppose some.
We hear the same bogus claims that you make for industrial wind from developers and politicians. Can you please back up your statements with real life examples?
Please explain in more detail your claims that wind power:
Will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels?
Will displace fossil fuels?

Will reduce air pollution?
As wind turbines have not shut down or curtailed fossil fuel generation or lowered emissions anywhere in the world, and oil is not used for generating much electricity, I am anxious to hear your answer to these questions and see actual examples you can cite to back up your grandiose claims.

If TransCanada is asking for lower appraisals on their damns because of an "oversupply of electricity" why would they or anyone want to build more inefficient unreliable wind plants?
The obvious answer is, to collect subsidies and tax credits which is what the industrial wind scam is really all about.
There are many reasons to oppose industrial wind turbines: noise, habitat fragmentation, erosion and sedimentation of streams and wetlands, aesthetics, property devaluation, loss of quality of life, killing birds and bats, impacts to wildlife, flora and fauna, etc., but mainly that they are a highly subsidized scam that will produce only an intermittent, unreliable, insignificant source of power that will do nothing to solve our energy needs no matter where they are sited. This project is more about playing on peoples fear and greed in order for wind developers like First Wind/UPC and their hedge fund and Wall St. investors to collect subsidies, grants, tax credits, double accelerated depreciation, etc than about producing "clean & green" electricity. The promises of "green" jobs and the linkage to energy independence, global warming, clean air, and imported oil by proponents and pandering corrupt politicians are vague, doubtful, unverifiable, and untrue. The social injustice of politically connected corporations like First Wind/UPC and other big wind developers hiding behind the "green" mantel and destroying rural communties for the sake of greed is immoral. Unfortunately, today corporations seem to have more rights than citizens. Currently there is a glut of generation in New England and wholesale prices for electricity are lower than they've been in years. We don't need environmentally destructive industrial scale wind turbines in the mountains or offshore. Industrial wind turbines are nothing more than a symbolic cure for non existant global warming.
"Dr. Richard Jennings, a retired psychiatrist who lives in Fayette, said his greatest concern was climate change and the future his grandchildren may face'
