CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Most businesses and homes in town Wednesday were without of electricity when a tree fell onto a power line just before noon, police dispatcher Torry Smith said.
“I was sitting here around 11 a.m. and all the lights went out,” Smith said. Soon after, about 300 loss-of-power alarms went off, and soon after that Smith said he started receiving calls asking about the outage.
It was a “huge” outage, Smith said, and “most of the town was out of power – pretty much the entire mountain and as far down as the valley.”
Within the hour, Central Maine Power Co. had arrived and power was restored. Smith said no one knows for sure what caused the tree to fall, but said he suspects last week’s snowfall.
