Variety of teen programs offered at Auburn library during January

AUBURN — A variety of teen programs are scheduled for January at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.

Teens! Friday @ the Movies will show “Mr. Deeds” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, in the Androscoggin Community Room. Adam Sandler and Winona Ryder star in the movie about a sweet-natured, small-town guy who inherits a controlling stake in a media conglomerate and begins to do business his way. There will be popcorn and movie candy. It is for teens, ages 12 to 18.

Tweens in the Teen Space will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 7 and 14, in the Teen Space. There will be crafts or board games available or hang out or get a head start on homework. The program is for fifth and sixth grade.

Teen Anime Club will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the Androscoggin Community Room. Ages 12-18 can drop in to talk about their favorite (or least favorite) manga, watch the week’s selection of anime, and try their hand at drawing characters. Snacks will be provided.

A Safe Voices Drop-In Visit from Julia will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, in the Teen Space. She will chat about relationships and work on projects. This is for ages 12-18.

Books & Cookies Book Club will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, in the Library Café. It is for teens ages 12-18.

Teen Life Skills: Health & Safety, St. Mary’s Nutrition Center of Maine, will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the Androscoggin Community Room. Paul Drowns, community cooking educator from the Nutrition Center of Maine at St. Mary’s, will present a program for ages 12-18. He will take a look at ingredients, and make something from scratch. For planning purposes, registration is requested. Register online or call 333-6640, ext. 4.

A Gaming Hour will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, and Friday, Jan. 23, in the Androscoggin Community Room. There will be video games and snacks for ages 12-18.

Teen Life Skills: Health & Safety, Phoenix Karate Academy, will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 20 and 27, in the Androscoggin Community Room. Teens will learn basic self-defense against common strikes and holds and discuss the importance of being aware of  surroundings, how body language can deter a possible attack and how attire can limit defense ability. Registration is required, as parents will need to sign a release form. Sign up for either date online or call 333-6640, ext. 4.

Maine Job Corps will be discussed from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the Conference Room for teens and new adults. Jill Moody of the Maine Job Corps will explain how the program works and who is eligible.

Teens! DIY Takeover will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the Androscoggin Community Room.  The project will be Mug Cakes. Preregistration is requested. Register online or call at 333-6640, ext. 4. The program is for ages 12-18.

DIY Teens! Media Club will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the CREATE! Media Lab. Ages 12-18 can make trailers, podcasts and more.

Molly of Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Services will visit from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in the Teen Space. She will discuss teen issues like healthy relationships, sexual assault, bullying, harassment, substance use/abuse and internet safety.
