PORTLAND – Pastor Vernal W. Duchette (Vern) of Oxford, went to that Mansion Over the Hilltop on Thursday, May 11, with his loving family, pastor and friends by his side.

He was born in Mechanic Falls, on June 2, 1928, to Joseph and Leona (Stone) Duchette. After graduating from Mechanic Falls High School, he joined the Army, serving in Korea. He married the former Opal Johnson on Sept 4, 1948.

He loved to spoil his special granddaughter, Kristal, whom he nicknamed “Pooka” and his special grandson, Nicholas whom he called “Small Change.” He was thankful that his loved ones have a personal relationship with Jesus. He was especially thankful that his daughter, Marie, married such a caring Christian man who was always there to lend a helping hand and also to help take care of him when he got so sick. He was a volunteer firefighter in Mechanic Falls, Gray and Lisbon.

He is survived by his wife, Opal; a daughter, Marie Gagne, and her husband, Marc, of Poland Spring; a granddaughter, Kristal Gagne of Lancaster, Pa.; a grandson, Nicholas, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed in San Francisco, Calif.; and a sister, Deanna Fickett and her husband, Bruce, of Mechanic Falls.
