Veterans’ home making plans for special week

PARIS – Plans are in the works at the Maine Veterans’ Home, South Paris, for the annual celebration of National Nursing Home Week May 14 to 20, sponsored by the American Health Care Association. The week will honor those persons who reside or work in a long-term health care facility.

The theme this year is “Legends in Our Own Time.” National Nursing Home Week takes time to recognize those whose personal achievements and acts of kindness and inspiration are the “stuff” of legends in individual facilities.

“We’ll take this week to let everyone know how legendary our residents, family members, volunteers, community members and staff are to us. We want to recognize the daily acts of kindness and compassion shown to our residents.

“We want to thank individual department members that go above and beyond their usual job to make life more enjoyable for our residents. We want to recognize the past accomplishments of residents before they came to this facility and those who continue to inspire us. We’ll have special activities going on daily that will involve residents, staff, families and friends,” said Pat Paar, activities supervisor.

Some of the special events slated for the week include demonstrations and exhibits of antiques; a Farmer’s Day, when planting around the facility will be done; a staff softball game; and a baby contest. Staff will have the opportunity to dress in different themes throughout the week.
