Veterans to observe Armed Forces Day


LEWISTON – Veterans’ organization and the public are invited to attend services commemorating Armed Forces Day at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Veterans Memorial Park, Lewiston entrance of the James B. Longley Bridge.

The program will open with singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” and Pledge of Allegiance by those assembled. The invocation will be delivered by Douglas Taylor followed by singing of the service songs by the assembly.

The history of the U.S. Marine Corps will be given by Past Commandant Roland Cyr, Central Maine Marine Corps League, and history of the U.S. Navy by President Emeritus Jerry DerBoghosian, U.S.S. Canberra Reunion Association.

Commander Richard Giem, Post 22, American Legion, Lewiston, will present a reading followed by the reading of names of soldiers from Maine who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Taps” will be sounded by Richard LeBlanc, Post 9150, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the ceremony will close with the singing of “God Bless America” by the assembly.
