AUBURN — Gov. Paul R. Lepage has given a proclamation that Saturday, Feb. 25, is “Maine Veterans Stand Up and Be Counted Day.” All veterans are to go to their nearest VFW, DAV or American Legion post in their community to sign up for their benefits. The William J. Rogers American Legion Post 153 will open its doors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to Hugh Brown, commander, this high priority mission is to assist veterans in signing up for veteran benefits. There are 150,000 veterans in Maine and only 30 percent have signed up for their benefits. Veterans advocate Jerry DeWitt; Dan St. Pierre, service officer; and Paul R. Bernard, public relations officer, will be on hand that day explaining general eligibility, service connected disabilities, pensions, education and training, home loan guaranty, VA life insurance, burial and memorial benefits, transition assistance, dependents and survivor health care, military medals and records.
