WALLAGRASS (WGME) — A dog named Leo befriended a baby moose in Wallagrass last week.

Shannon Lugdon, Leo’s owner, spotted the calf last week. Wardens told her the baby moose, who Lugdon named Maggie, was just 6-days-old.

“Two phenomenal wardens, Adrian and Nick, came over and we helped Miss Maggie back down to the brook in the shade. She spent the day wandering around by the brook and returning to the spot we think her momma had left her. The wardens asked us not to go near her for 24 hours, wild animals often leave their babies to eat, drink, and rest,” Lugdon said.

The next morning, Lugdon says she looked outside for Maggie the moose and didn’t see her so she let Leo go outside, but Leo found Maggie right away.

“I let Leo out to do his business and he walked right over and Miss Maggie and Leo became fast friends,” Lugdon said. “You can’t imagine how affectionate she was.”

Lugdon says the wardens returned to their home and arraigned for a biologist to take Maggie to the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray.

Lugdon says she and her family promote outdoor adventures in northern Maine through summer camps and guided hunts at Lugdon Lodge on Eagle Lake.
