Ethan Simon of the Bates College Outing Club holds jumpers back on the side of Lake Andrews on Friday. Only four jumpers were allowed on the “puddle” at one time because massive amounts of students on the ice would cause water to come up through the hole in the ice, causing dangerous conditions. Bates College alumnus Gail Dow, 79, of Lewiston came to watch the Puddle Jump. Dow said she swims in the college pool three days a week and had no intention of taking a dip in Lake Andrews. “The pool is cold enough,” Dow said. “Class of 1960 and proud of it. There are still a few of us around.” (Daryn Slover/Sun Journal)
