PORTLAND — Virginia K. Johnson, 87, of Rangeley and formerly of Yarmouth, Mass., died Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.

She was born in Springfield, Ohio, to William White Kiefer and Virginia Paine Kiefer. As a child, she lived with her family in Forest Hills, Queens, N.Y. In 1942, after the death of her father, she moved to Yarmouth, Mass. There, she met the love of her life, Richard K. Johnson, at Yarmouth High School. After graduating, she attended Connecticut College for Women, graduating in 1948.

Ginny and Dick were married in Barnstable in 1947 and settled in Yarmouth, Mass., where they raised their family and were very active in the community. Ginny was a devoted and loving wife and mother, and she also was very giving to many social and charitable causes.

She was a charter member and past president of the Housing Assistance Corp. and active in the Democratic Town Committee. During her working career, she was an administrative assistant for Beecher and Pine law offices and Mycock, Kilroy & Green of Hyannis, Mass.

Ginny and Dick retired to Rangeley in 1989 and became active members of the community there. Ginny loved to read, and she joined many book clubs, played bridge and volunteered in town. She became a world traveler, visiting many different countries.

Her family would like to thank her many caring and affectionate friends in Rangeley for their kindness to her over the years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard K. Johnson, in 1994; and by her sister, Nancy K. Tripp, in 2009.

She is survived by her sons, Steven K. Johnson of Yarmouth Port, Mass., Michael K. Johnson and his wife, Nancy, of Hyannis, Mass., and Richard K. Johnson of Kings Park, N.Y. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Kerry, Elizabeth and Olivia Johnson; as well as 10 stepgrandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She also leaves nephews, Joseph Tripp of Yarmouth, Mass.; and William Tripp of Oregon.
