AUBURN — Virginia Kelly, 86, died Monday, April 12, at the Hospice House. She was a resident of Canton.
She was born in Mexico, Dec. 2, 1923, to John and Margaret Bernard. She grew up with a thirst for knowledge and graduated salutatorian for the class of 1941. She was a wonderful office administrator and held different positions over the years at Stowell McGregor, Oxford Paper Co. until ending her professional career as assistant manager/vice president of Franklin Savings Bank in Rumford.
She married Norman Kelly in 1949, and they were blessed with five children. She was proud of the fact that all of her children have college degrees. During the years of raising children, they spent summers tenting at Worthley Pond and winters skiing at Mt. Abram.
Her strong love of learning continued into retirement with lessons in piano, photography, computers and a new found interest in gardening. Norman and Virginia retired to a summer home on Canton Lake in Maine, and a winter home in Vero Beach, Fla. In the summers, they golfed at Turner Country Club. She and Norman were known for lighting up a dance floor and became involved in local square and round dancing organizations in the area.
She is survived by her husband, Norman Kelly of Canton; children, Thomas and Elizabeth Kelly of Auburn, Mass., Peggy and Fred Aiello of Turner, Michael and Donna Kelly of Glastonbury, Conn., Mark and Caroline Kelly of Needham, Mass., and Kathy and Mike Gerhardt of Eden Prairie, Minn.; eight grandchildren; a sister, Anne Young of Falls Church, Va.; a brother, Bob Bernard of Oakland; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; four sisters, Julia Wulff, Lorraine Dawson, Lena Louvat and Helen Henry; and three brothers, Edmund, Andrew and Anthony Bernard.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Montello Nursing Home in Lewiston, and the Auburn Hospice House for their exceptional care during the last 18 months of her illness.
