Visitors limited around babies at FMH

FARMINGTON — Franklin Memorial Hospital’s Maternal and Child Unit is limiting visitations of children to ensure the safety of the babies during this flu season.

No children under the age of 12, unless they are healthy siblings, are allowed on the unit during the flu season. All other visitors must also be feeling well and should wash their hands before entering the unit.

“We need to protect our vulnerable patients,” MaryAnne Goodwin, unit manager, said. “Because newborns can not be vaccinated for flu, they should not have any unnecessary exposure to people with respiratory or other contagious illnesses.”

In a recent update, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the flu started early and is now widespread. It states that it is especially important this year for everyone over the age of 6 months to get vaccinated because this year’s strain is particularly aggressive.
