Volunteers honored for service

FARMINGTON — Franklin Memorial Hospital’s Bass Conference Room was the festive setting for a recognition celebration for the Franklin Community Health Network’s volunteers. The program included a social time and dinner and entertainment by the Mt. Blue Syncopations. All volunteers attending received special gifts in recognition of their volunteer efforts, as well as pins and service bars.

The program was in memory of Lucette Burton, David Frey, Jeanne Martineau, Marcie O’Brien and Susan Upham, volunteers who have passed away since the last recognition. Collectively, they gave more than 8,014 hours of volunteer service to the program. Charlie Woodcock, director of volunteers, paused for a moment of silence in their memory.

Rebecca Ryder, president/CEO of Franklin Community Health Network, welcomed and thanked the group for their quality work and said, “Tonight is all about you. We treasure your contributions and you are vital to the success of this institution.”

Ryder mentioned that with 250 volunteers this past year helping out in some 40 hospital departments, as well as affiliated FCHN organizations, the volunteer program is extremely strong for a small rural hospital. “Collectively, our volunteers contributed more than 26,000 hours of service,” she said.

Volunteers can be found greeting patients at the escort desk, parking cars, decorating for special functions, filing, processing orders in shipping and receiving and calling patients to remind them of their appointments.

Of the volunteers, Elaine Wing has volunteered the longest, 34 years; Albertine Smith has volunteered the most hours overall, 7,971; and Patty Kilkenny volunteered the most hours this year, 764.

Special recognition was given to those who have contributed the greatest number of hours overall since joining the program. They included: Albertine Smith, Doris Munson, Trudy Dawson, Alvin McDonald, Elaine Wing, Allan Smith, Rejeanne Paradis, Eugene Martineau, Linda Allen and Belle Foss.

Woodcock also acknowledged 22 couples who volunteer. They include: Jerry and Cleo Bourget, Norm and Linda Blodgett, Skip and Erlane Dyke, Dale and Judy Fairbanks, Bob and Nancy Flick, Richard and Roberta Fogg, Les and Betty Gatchell, Dick and Lynda Giard, Lewis and Shirley Holbrook, Lyle and Gail Karkos, Ed and Jan Lewis, Gene and Donna Marshall, Alvin and Kitty MacDonald, Nye and Carole Mosher, David and Catherine Perna, Erland and Jean Rand, Duane and Pamela Schanz, Glenn and Jeanne Stowe, Robert and Sharon Tirrell, Steve and Judy Townley, Seth and Dee Trahan and John and Judy Wilbur.

Woodcock welcomes calls from anyone who might be interested in volunteering at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She can be reached at 779-2552.
