AUBURN — The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine will host its 10th annual “Walk for Wishes” at 10 locations across Maine, including Auburn, on Wednesday, May 26. The walk will start at Festival Plaza. Registration and entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. and the walk will begin at 6 p.m.
Recent wishes include 16-year-old Becca from Turner, who wished to go to Hawaii; 13-year-old Christopher from Waterville, who wished to go to Walt Disney World; and 16-year-old Hope from Monmouth, who wished to travel to Australia.
Jasmine, 16, of Lewiston, recently wished to have a Sweet-16 party to remember. Jasmine lives with a life-threatening heart condition called cardiomyopathy. Thanks, in part, to help from local businesses and volunteers, Make-A-Wish came through with a magical night at the Hilton Garden Inn.
The party was complete with a pink chocolate fountain, photo booth, faux magazine covers featuring Jasmine, a personalized birthday cake, a personalized step-and-repeat banner, hip-hop dance performances, a DJ, food and a surprise visit from Universal Republic recording artist Spose.
Jasmine’s family and friends were invited to the party via a personalized rap song made for Jasmine and sent to all invitees. At the party, the guests dressed in black and white while Jasmine enjoyed three dresses throughout the evening. She arrived, via limo and red carpet, wearing a Sweet-16 sash, to a crowd of “paparazzi” made of friends, family, volunteers, hotel staff and guests of the hotel.
More than 900 children with life-threatening illnesses in Maine have received their greatest wish since the chapter opened its doors in 1992. Out of these wishes, 70 have been for children in Androscoggin County. All wish children face a life-threatening medical condition and the magic of a wish helps to give them, and their family, a chance to dream about something other than doctors, hospitals or missing school.
The local foundation chapter grants a wish almost every five days to a Maine child. To register for the Walk for Wishes, visit www.mainewish.org or call 800-491-3171. All walk participants can manage pledges, donations, teams and e-mails directly online.
