Walter R. ‘Deak’ Bachelder Sr.

1936 – 2010

AUGUSTA — Walter Roger “Deak” Bachelder Sr., 73, a resident of Walter Drive in Leeds, died Sunday, March 14, at Togus V.A. Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Avon, the son of Walter J. and Vilda W. (Moody) Bachelder. He went to school in Avon and Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Auburn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1960.

On March 15, 1975, in Presque Isle, he married his wife of 35 years, Cleo Sharp. He was a “jack-of-all-trades.” He worked for W.D. Matthews in Auburn; Inmont Industries in Winthrop; and as a high pressure boiler operator at Continental Mills in Lewiston. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the NRA, Monmouth Snowmobile Club and the American Legion Post 40 in Winthrop.

He is survived by his mother, Vilda Bachelder of Leeds; his wife, Cleo Bachelder of Leeds; six sons, Bryan Bachelder of Readfield, Walter Bachelder Jr., his wife, Miranda, Edward Bachelder and fiance’, Lori Harris of Manchester and Darren Chase of Farmington and Robert and Mark LaBelle, of Leeds; four daughters, Jeannie (Bachelder) Norton and her husband, Harold, of Pittston, Christina (Bachelder) LaJoie of Bethel, Donna (Bachelder) Moore and her husband, Rodney, of Jefferson and Teresa Pratt of Leeds; six brothers, Lee Bachelder and his wife, Lucrecia, of Berwick, Earl Bachelder and his wife, Jan and Dennis Bachelder and his wife, Cheryl, both of Friendship, Tony Bachelder and his wife, Becky, of Buckfield, Dalon Bachelder of Leeds and Steve Bachelder and wife, Lisa, of Leeds; six sisters, Glennis Jackson of Avon, Evelyn Ray and her husband, Vern, of Greene, Christine Hafford of Monmouth, Irene Hafford, Deana Hewins and her husband, Albert, Noreen Chamberlain and her husband, Peter, all of Leeds; 27 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his father, Walter J. Bachelder; brothers, George and Lenard Bachelder; and son, Reine “Mannie” LaBelle.
