WALES — Western Maine Transportation Services driver David Webster of Wales made it eight years in a row, taking the championship for the Maine Transit Association/Maine Department of Transportation Roadeo on May 7 at the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum.

Webster, who drives paratransit buses for Western Maine Transportation Services in the Lewiston/Auburn area, competed in the bus category and finished with a 5-point margin over the second-place overall finisher from Coastal Trans who competed in the van category.

Of the four WMTS competitors, both Webster and eighth-place driver Pam Lizotte finished in the top 10 out of a field of 23 drivers.

The annual competition, held on the apron of the Owls Head airport, features a 100-question written test, a series of six precision driving skills tests, a test which challenges drivers’ abilities to identify problems with a vehicle while performing a “pre-trip” inspection and a wheelchair tie-down safety test.

Webster will now go on to the Community Transportation Association of America National Bus Roadeo in Indianapolis, Ind., on June 5, in conjunction with the annual CTAA Expo.

Along with his eight consecutive Maine state bus driving championships, Webster has placed in the top five at the CTAA National Roadeo on four occasions, including a first-place finish in 2006.
