Local student earns PhD

SAN FRANCISCO — Peter Maxwell Kienitz Westcott received his PhD in pharmacogenomics at the University of California San Francisco in May.

He will be returning to New England in September to take a post-doctoral position at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He will be  conducting cancer research on how patterns of mutations imprinted across the cancer genome can be exploited to sensitize tumors to destruction by the immune system.

Peter is a 2004 graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn. An important component in Peter’s success in the field of biology was the advanced placement study program that was offered at ELHS and the excellent teacher who taught his AP biology course. He is the son of Kathleen Kienitz and Jonathan Harris.
