Werts, former Auburn fire chief, to run for Legislature

AUBURN — Wayne Werts, Auburn’s former fire chief, has announced his candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives for District 70, which includes parts of Auburn and Lewiston.

Werts retired from the Auburn Fire Department in March 2010 after 33 years of service, the last nine as chief.

He said his understanding of the effects that decisions made in Augusta have on citizens and municipalities is one of the motivations for his candidacy.

During his Fire Department service, Werts earned an associate degree in fire science and a certificate in occupational health and safety, and became a paramedic. He was president of Local 797 for six years, served on the Maine Fire Chiefs’ Association Board of Directors representing Androscoggin County, and served on the Maine EMS board for 12 years, two years as chairman. He was also on the State of Maine Task Force for the All Hazards Training Facilities study and was an EMS instructor teaching throughout Maine and internationally.

Werts resides in Auburn with his wife, Debra.

Since retiring he has provided consulting services to municipalities across New England.
