William Wallace Matthews


BIDDEFORD – William Wallace Matthews, 80, of 393 Center St., The Highland Apartments, Auburn, left his earthly body to meet the Creator of all things, His Lord and Savior, on June 11. He became ill on Friday afternoon after driving to the ocean and died unexpectedly on Monday evening at Southern Maine Medical Center, with family by his side.

He was a lover of life, his country and all people regardless of race, color or creed. He served his country for many years in the U.S. Navy. He also worked as a police officer both in Lewiston and Palos Verdes, Calif., before returning to Maine in 1966. His last job was for the state of Maine Department of Transportation as a sign inspector until his retirement in 1988.

Bill’s greatest passion was books. He collected, sold and gave away many in his lifetime. He loved to travel and collected many things. Laughter, fun and games were a big part of his family life. He also loved to serve others and had many ministries. He always had a helping hand for anyone in need.

Left behind is his wife Gertrude Y. Matthews of 55 years, and his four children, Maureen Marcotte and Robert, Gail Sasseville and Paul, Pamela Gabri and William Wallace III and Veronica; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Joyce Stevens and Carol Lasko.
