1933 – 2014
SOUTH PARIS — Willis Leroy Whittemore, 80, of South Paris, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, Feb. 23.
Willis was born in North Norway on Dec. 12, 1933. He graduated from Norway High School in 1952, and later that year met Yvonne DeShon during a dance at the Norway Inn. Willis and Yvonne were married in a double ceremony that included her brother, Eugene and his wife, Gerry, on New Year’s Eve 1952.
Willis was an avid horseman and spent his years on various tracks as an owner, driver and trainer. He won numerous racing awards through the years, and was a well-known and loved figure at the track.
Willis had a wonderful sense of humor and could always put a smile on your face with his wit and charm. He and Yvonne always made sure that anyone who walked into their home had plenty to eat and had their fair share from the candy basket.
Willis will be remembered as a wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Willis is survived by his brothers, Vernon and Kenneth Whittemore; his sister, Virginia Jones; his five sons, Duffy Whittemore and wife, Rhonda, Dennis Whittemore and wife, Diane, Dana Whittemore and wife, Lorie, Danny Whittemore and wife, Barbara, and Melvin Whittemore and wife, Abby; and his daughter, Cynthia McKeen. He left behind 10 grandchildren, Desiree Dessureault, Dennis Whittemore Jr., Lana Herring, Aimee and Aly McKeen, Bruce Whittemore, DJ Whittemore, Londen Fogg, Maggie Whittemore and Kelly Whittemore; and his two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Jacquae Herring.
Willis was predeceased by his wife, Yvonne Whittemore; his parents, Erna and Charles Whittemore Sr.; his brothers, Charles Jr., Stanley and Donald Whittemore; and his sister, Pauline.
