Wilton to get free welding classes

WILTON – The Wilton CareerCenter is accepting applications for a free training class in welding for employment opportunities with Cianbro Corp.

Cianbro representatives were here Monday and will be back next week to interview potential candidates for the class, said Patty Ladd, center manager, on Thursday.

“While we’ve found a lot of qualified candidates, we’re also developing a list of people who are interested for not only this but for other training programs,” she said.

Cianbro has welding jobs available for a boat building contract on Ricker Wharf in Portland, she said. The company is interviewing to select candidates compatible with available jobs. Although not hired until the training is successfully completed, the training is offered at no cost to the individual.

Candidates selected will be offered the free instruction. The training requires a 40-hour week without pay.

The training includes eight-hour days Monday through Friday from July 30 to Aug. 24 at the Nichols/Bass Business and Technology Center.

The training is funded by a Department of Labor’s North Star Alliance Initiative grant. It includes training in stick and flux welding. Les Richardson of Wilton will teach the class.

Those interested may fill out an application online at www.cianbro.com and then schedule an interview with Ladd at the Wilton Career Center by calling 645-5800. Interviews and orientation will be held at the Career Center.
