Winiker family to give rare performance

HARRISON – Cited as “Boston’s House Band” by the Boston Globe, the Winikers have provided memorable soundtracks for important events throughout New England for a score of years, keeping people dancing to their happy, upbeat music at all kinds of gatherings.

Although the Winiker family have summered in Maine since the early 1970s – they were the original “Family Band” at the Point Sebago Resort from 1970 to 1974 – and the Winiker Band has played for several weddings in the area, with the exception of one fund-raising performance on the Songo River Queen for the Naples Library, they have never given a public performance in this region

Thanks to the generous support of Gordon Dexter and Barbara Grandolfo, summer neighbors of the Winikers, on Saturday, July 28, Harrison’s Deertrees Theatre will provide the venue as Bo Winiker, brother Bill and bassist Tom Petrakes team up with pianist Tony Deblois at Harrison’s Deertrees Theatre to finally bring the unforgettable Winiker sound and style to the Lake Regions of Maine. This is a “must attend” performance for all jazz aficionados, be they lovers of trad, swing, bebop, jazzy takes on Broadway classics or even world music, and the addition of jazz savant pianist Tony Deblois makes the occasion even more exciting.

Ever since he was born, blind and weighing less than two pounds, Tony Deblois has been defying the odds and wildly surpassing others’ expectations. Diagnosed early on as autistic, at two years old his talent for music was revealed when he played “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” on a toy piano. Going on to graduate with honors from the Berklee College of Music, today Tony leads an improvisational jazz ensemble and performs solo shows from Dublin to Taipei and even Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center. He was the subject of the 1997 CBS made Movie of the Week “Journey of the Heart” and the recently published book, “Some Kind of Genius; The Extraordinary Journey of Musical Savant Tony DeBlois.”

Tickets for the Winiker Quartet performance at Deertrees Theatre are $20 and are available through the theatre Box Office at 583-6747, online at www.deertreestheatre.org, and at the Fare Share in Norway, the Cool Moose in Bridgton, the Country Sleigh in Naples and Books N Things in Bethel.
