WISCASSET (AP) — Residents of a Maine town who sparked outrage when they changed the name of their street to Redskin’s Drive have requested another name change they hope will “avoid any further conflict or potential lawsuits.”

The Times Record (http://bit.ly/10oo4Bf ) reported that residents of the Wiscasset street want to change the name to Micmac Drive.

The selectmen drew the ire of Native Americans when they approved the name Redskin’s Drive in August. Residents said it was meant to honor graduates of Wiscasset High School, which was known as the Redskins before the name was changed to Wolverines several years ago.

Chief Edward Peter Paul of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs told The Lincoln County News he approves of the name Micmac Drive.
