Woman held in death of elderly man

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) – A 28-year-old woman has been jailed without bail after being accused of smothering an elderly man she lived with and stealing his money.

Heather Catterall pleaded not guilty to larceny Monday during an arraignment in district court. She will be arraigned separately on a murder charge in Kent Country Superior Court.

During the hearing, prosecutors said Catterall served as an informal caregiver for Albert Dubois, 76, and lived in his Warwick home. The attorney general’s office said Catterall smothered Dubois with a garbage bag, then stole a wad of cash after an argument over money.

Dubois’ stepson found the victim dead in his bedroom Friday.

The relationship between Catterall and Dubois remains uncertain. Warwick Police Capt. Michael Babula said Dubois didn’t need a medical caregiver.
