Women’s center honors volunteers

LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women hosted a Valentine Thank You Party for volunteers on Feb. 12. In the first full year since reopening, 20 volunteers gave more than 1,700 hours of time. They worked as companions, front desk greeters and workshop or small group leaders. The group was honored with a crepe party and each volunteer was given a small gift.

The center is looking for two or three more volunteer companions to serve as a non-anxious listening presence. Companions must have a background in fields such as social work or spiritual direction and commit to a regular minimum three hour block of time weekly, and a monthly staff reflection time.

There is also a need for a volunteer nurse to focus on health and wellness issues, and beauticians to donate haircuts and manicures.

The center has a wish list of needed materials and supplies. New items on the wish list are personal hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and paste. The complete wish list and a monthly calendar of programs are available on the Web site at www.wisdomswomen.org.

Funding for the center has been received from the Maine Community Foundation, the Daughters of Wisdom, Concordia Partners and a private family foundation along with many individual gifts.

Checks can be written to Trinity Church/Wisdom and sent to The Center for Wisdom’s Women at P.O. Box 1016, Lewiston, ME 04240.
