Yankees pound on Twins National League

MINNEAPOLIS – Jason Giambi hit two long home runs and the New York Yankees beat Minnesota 9-3 Sunday to avoid their first three-game sweep at the hands of the Twins since 1991.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched seven strong innings and Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez also homered for the Yankees, who dropped the first two games of the series before flexing their muscles against Brad Radke (2-1).

BALTIMORE – Vladimir Guerrero homered twice and drove in three runs to back a fine pitching performance by John Lackey, and the Los Angeles Angels snapped a three-game skid by beating the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 .

DETROIT – Chris Shelton hit his major league-leading eighth home run, backing Mike Maroth and leading the Detroit Tigers over the Cleveland Indians 1-0.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Carl Crawford hit a tiebreaking two-run triple to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to an 9-5 win over the Kansas City Royals.

White Sox 6, Blue Jays 4

CHICAGO – Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye hit two-run homers, and Scott Podsednik broke out of his slump to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 in a game that was stopped by rain after the top of the fifth inning.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Mark Teixeira hit a tying two-run home run in the ninth inning off Huston Street, and Brad Wilkerson hit a go-ahead double off the Oakland closer, leading the Texas Rangers over the Athletics 5–3.

NEW YORK – Xavier Nady drove in three runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly and Carlos Delgado hit a three-run homer to help the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3.

DENVER – Brett Myers combined with two relievers on a seven-hit shutout and Ryan Howard homered, leading the Philadelphia Phillies over the Colorado Rockies in the first 1-0 win by a visiting team at Coors Field.

Nationals 7, Marlins 5

MIAMI – Ryan Church hit a pair of two-run homers, including a tiebreaking drive in a three-run ninth that led the Washington Nationals over the Florida Marlins 7-5.

Cubs 7, Pirates 3

PITTSBURGH – Todd Walker hit a two-run homer in the first inning, Aramis Ramirez added a two-run shot and the Chicago Cubs finished another successful series in Pittsburgh by defeating the Pirates 7-3.

Derrek Lee hit a two-run double that chased starter Ian Snell (0-1) in a four-run sixth – his 43rd hit against the Pirates since 2004, the most by any major league player against another club in that span.

LOS ANGELES – Brad Hennessey worked 6 1-3 shutout innings, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0.

Padres 4, Braves 3

ATLANTA – Brian Giles sparked a comeback from a three-run deficit with his first homer of the year, and the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 to avoid a three-game sweep.

Cardinals 8, Reds 7

ST. LOUIS – Albert Pujols’ third home run of the game, a tiebreaking two-run shot in the ninth inning, gave the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-7 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Astros 8, D-backs 5

PHOENIX – Lance Berkman had three hits and three RBIs and Morgan Ensberg hit a three-run homer to power Houston to an 8-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks .

Ensberg’s second homer in as many games came off reliever Jason Grimsley and capped the Astros’ seven-run sixth inning.
