LEWISTON – The annual fundraising “Swimarama” will take place at the YWCA of Central Maine throughout February. The Olympic-sized pool will host a wide variety of swimmers who will pledge to swim for 30 minutes and donate the funds they raise to the YWCA for the general upkeep of the pool.

“We always look forward to this event,” said Pam Gallant, director of aquatics. “The swimmers enjoy the event and our community supporters receive have fun seeing the results of their donations.”

The event will take place in February in order to take advantage of the large number of high school swim teams that utilize the pool for their teams.

“Though we have a great many high school students who use our pool, I look forward to seeing the great many people who help us maintain this community asset,” said Anne Craigs, executive director. “We have swimmers as young as 6 months who swim with their parents to swimmers in their 80s and 90s. Swimming is truly a fountain of youth.”

The logistics of the annual fundraiser have changed this year to make participation more convenient. Swimmers can register for times that are convenient to their schedule anytime during the month. The YWCA will reserve one to three lanes every day in February to accommodate swimmers.

People who wish to participate and cannot swim well are able to use equipment to assist them such as water-walking belts, noodles and kickboards. To help support the YWCA of Central Maine, contact Gallant or Kim Finnerty for a pledge form at 795-4050. The YWCA of Central Maine is a United Way agency.
