KITTERY (AP) – A massive Navy ship has departed Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with a nuclear-powered research sub that’s due to be delivered to Washington state.
The 609-foot-long USS Carter Hall has plenty of space for the 150-foot NR-1, a deep-water research and engineering submarine that went into duty in 1969. The sub arrived in Kittery in December 2008 and it was officially decommissioned nearly a year ago in Groton, Conn.
The Carter Hall dominated the waterfront after its arrival Monday. It departed Wednesday afternoon.
The dock landing ship is designed to transport and launch amphibious craft and vehicles in amphibious assault operations.
