PORTLAND — A Maine Turnpike employee was killed Friday after being struck by a truck at a construction site in Interstate 95 near the Westbrook city line, police said.

Jeffrey Abbott, 53, of Saco was killed while sitting in an MTA safety vehicle at the site, according to a news release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Abbott had left the cab of the truck to remove safety cones when he was struck by a truck driven by Cody Craig, 20, of Turner, the release said. Craig’s truck, owned by Nortrax Corp. of Westbrook, had hit two other vehicles that had slowed down for construction. The truck veered into the construction area and hit Abbott.

The drivers of the two vehicles were identified as 40-year-old Joshua Brown of Rumford and 25-year-old Kelly James of Lewiston. Neither was injured, McCausland said.

The crash was reported at 1:35 p.m. and troopers cleared the scene at 5:15.

No charges have been filed, but the crash report will be reviewed by the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office after it is completed, McCausland said.
