A Richmond man was arrested Tuesday and charged with breaking into a vacant house in Litchfield and stealing its copper piping, according to a statement from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Ryan Cray, 28, was taken to Kennebec County Jail and booked on charges of burglary and theft, McCausland said.

A Pleasant Hill Road resident who came home for lunch noticed Cray walking along a private road. The man confronted Cray, asking him why he was there. The man also noticed a trash barrel outside a nearby home that was not normally kept in that spot, McCausland said.

The man called 911 to report the unusual activity. He described Cray and his vehicle. Shortly afterward, police recognized the vehicle and waited for Cray at his Richmond home. When he arrived, local police detained him until Maine State Police arrived. He was arrested and charged with burglary, theft and failing to submit to arrest, McCausland said.

Police found copper piping and wire cutters in the trash barrel outside the home. There were signs of forced entry in the basement where copper piping had been cut and was missing.
