PORTLAND — Baby bat Stellaluna’s life is flitting along nicely – until one night an owl knocks the little critter out of her mother’s loving grasp.

Thus begins Janell Cannon’s beloved children’s book, “Stellaluna,” now soaring to new life in a charming puppet theater adaptation to be presented Saturday, Dec. 5, by Portland Ovations at South Portland High School.

Snatched from her mother, tiny bat Stellaluna tumbles luckily into a nest of baby birds. Still, her whole world is turned upside down. Stellaluna’s adoptive mom is happy to take her under her wing, but only if she stops behaving like a bat and starts behaving like a good bird should.

This heartwarming and instructive puppet theater work will be performed by Toronto’s King Cole Productions at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the high-school auditorium.

“Stellaluna” is geared toward children ages 4 to 9. Parents and other theater-goers can download a study guide for the performance at www.portlandovations.org/shows/2009-10/stellaluna/.

Tickets, $10, are available through PortTix, the box office at Merrill Auditorium; by calling 842-0800; and online at www.portlandovations.org. They may still be available at the door the day of show.
