I believe Mayor Raymond made a mistake and he apologized. I forgive the mayor. I also forgive Ali, a Somali man who works for our city.
Ali came to my office in Lewiston to speak about Somalis living in Lewiston. When asked, Ali stated that Somalis believe homosexuals should be killed. I did not ask for Ali’s resignation because I believe in forgiveness and learning together. I hope my brothers and sisters from Somalia will forgive Mayor Raymond, because we affirm:
• our community welcomes all,
• we say no to hatred,
• we say yes to safety, and
• we support full membership for everyone on the community.
I do not know Mayor Raymond but I do not believe he needed to attend the rally as he may have felt like I felt… unsafe.
