It seems that in our culture today respect has become a thing of the past. All we have to do is look around us; what do we see?

Take television for example. We see talk shows and reality shows where people do nothing more than attempt to humiliate each other.

What about schools? We see rude, disruptive behaviors, inappropriate language and apathy among some students.

How about a drive along our streets? We are assaulted with the blaring noise of car exhausts and sound systems.

Walk around, how often do we see people greeting each other with smiles or opening doors? So what happened to common courtesy and respect?

I believe that the influence of the media, such as television and music, have something to do with it.

However, I also believe that school policies have become far too lenient over the past couple of years. Students are often permitted to openly disrespect teachers and other students. Without penalties, abusive behaviors continue.

The bulk of responsibility, I believe, rests with parents. Parents don’t seem to have the time or desire to instill strong moral values anymore. Without values, where do we stand?

If parents and schools got back to the basics, holding individuals accountable for inappropriate behaviors and actions, giving penalties when needed and worrying less about their self-esteem, maybe we would have a chance at restoring respect in our communities.
