UMF avenges its first loss ever to MMA with a convincing 16-1 win.

CASTINE — The University of Maine at Farmington avenged its first loss to Maine Maritime Academy in school history earlier in the day and earned a split in Thursday’s women’s softball doubleheader.

MMA (3-7) came back from a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game, stringing five hits and seven runs together to beat the Beavers, 9-6.

Abbi Darling had two hits and three RBIs, including a key run-scoring single during the game-winning rally. Janice Spear (3-5) went the distance for the Mariners, striking out one and walking two while yielding nine hits and no earned runs. Kristi Cochin had three singles to lead the Beavers (1-1).

The Beavers avenged the loss with a 16-1 win in the second game. Samantha Goyette clubbed two hits and drove in four runs, while Mary Berry had a double, drove in a pair and scored three runs.

Lauren Stacey dominated the Mariner offense, allowing only two hits while striking out four and walking just one.

Bates 9, Babson 7

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior Liz Lawler scored two of her three goals midway through the second half to lift the Bates College Bobcats to a 9-7 victory over Babson

Katie Carroll’s goal with just 2.7 seconds left in the first half gave Bates the lead heading into halftime of the see-saw contest.

Babson’s Alexa Rad tied the game with a goal 43 seconds into the second half, before Bates finally took the lead for good when Erica Nason scored her third goal of the contest with 17:54 remaining. Lawler then scored her two goals to give the Bobcats (6-1) a three-goal cushion.

Curry 11, USM 10

MILTON, Mass. — Rebecca Gardner netted a pair of goals in overtime, including the game-winner with three seconds remaining to lift Curry College over the University of Southern Maine.

With the game tied at 9-9 heading into the overtime, Gardner scored her first goal 1:37 into the extra session to give the Colonels (3-1) the lead. The Huskies (0-3) rallied to tie it again on Melanie Fike’s goal with 1:01 remaining, setting the stage for the deciding marker from Gardner.

Jess Callahan tallied four goals for the Huskies, while Emily Kirkland added a pair of gaols.

Men’s lacrosse
Salve Regina 9, USM 7

NEWPORT, R.I. — Tim Ryan scored three goals, including a pair in the fourth quarter, to lead Salve Regina to a 9-7 win over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference action. Ryan’s two goals increased the Seahawks’ slim one-goal lead before USM’s Tobey Farrington scored to account for the final margin. Paul Dubiel paced the Huskies (2-1) with three goals.

Mark Simonelli added a pair of gaols for the Seahawks (2-1).
