I am a United States sailor and a graduate of Lewiston High School.

I participated in the first Gulf War back in 1991. I have served in the Navy for almost 18 years.

First off, I would like to say that back then I received the Sun Journal by mail weekly and you were the only way I got local news. Nowadays I can go online and receive news from home via the Internet.

I am presently serving in San Diego, going to school for the Navy. Once I am done I will be headed back to a ship. I can tell you from personal experience what those sailors are experiencing.

Many of them are very young, just out of high school. Some have never seen war before and they are scared. I am also sure they are very determined in their resolve to do what they need to.

I also want to tell all the families in Maine that have sailors out there that the United States Navy is the most modern in the world.

I do not have ill will toward those who want to protest; it’s their right to do so. But, they should not mistreat our armed forces members who are putting their lives on the line for our safety.
