ALFRED (AP) – A teenager who was submerged in icy water for several minutes during a car accident remained hospitalized Thursday.

Maine Medical Center said the condition of 14-year-old Bradley Allaire was being withheld at the request of his parents.

Allaire was riding in a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass when it rolled off Swett’s Bridge Road and into Middle Branch River on Tuesday evening, according to the York County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, Brittany Coombs, 17, of Newfield failed to negotiate a curve as she approached the bridge, Lt. Gary Fecteau said.

Coombs and the other passenger, 15-year-old Matthew Spooner, also of Newfield, escaped without injury after the car rolled end-over-end and landed upside-down in about four feet of water.

The teens were able to remove Allaire from the car after several minutes with the help of a Jayson Daney, a resident who heard the crash, Fecteau said.

The accident remains under investigation.

Excessive speed may have been a factor, Fecteau said.
