Junior hockey team will reveal logo, jersey today at city hall

LEWISTON – The list of 1,070 entries has been pared down to one.

On Wednesday, the city of Lewiston and the new Lewiston hockey franchise will announce the team’s name and its official logo at a news conference at Lewiston City Hall.

The Sun-Journal has learned through a source close to the team, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, that the hockey team will be called the Lewiston Maineiacs. The name was the 243rd name submitted as part of the team’s naming contest run through its Web site.

The team’s colors will be blue, black and white, and there are several different logos, depending on where they appear.

The jersey will feature a block-lettered blue “M.” In front of the letter will be a crazed hockey player wearing a blue jersey and blue helmet, carrying an orange hockey stick. The orange and blue comes directly from the team’s current colors in Sherbrooke.

“It was hard to find a scheme that didn’t already exist,” said the source. “We had one picked out, but I turned on a New York Islanders game and saw that it was basically the same as theirs.”

The away jerseys will have a black background with blue shoulders with blue and white trim. The home jerseys will have a white base with black shoulders and will be trimmed in black and blue.

The logos and merchandise will be officially revealed at a news conference at Lewiston City Hall today at 10:30 a.m. and will be available for viewing and download at the team’s Web site, www.lewistonhockey.com.

At the news conference, the first person who suggested the name “Maineiacs” will be presented with a pair of season ticket for the team’s inaugural season, which starts this September. The winner will also be invited to take part in an on-ice ceremony where the individual will receive a team-autographed stick and a commemorative plaque.

The Lewiston Maineiacs is the only United States-based franchise of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, one of the primary development leagues for the National Hockey League.
