In recent weeks, there has been a tremendous outpouring of support for U.S. troops abroad. Many wonderful people want to send letters and care packages to troops to show their love, support and gratitude.

Unfortunately, we’re being told that the military isn’t able to deliver packages to “any serviceperson.” Instead, one needs a specific name and address to send letters and packages.

I have a suggestion for people who want to show their support to the men and women who are sacrificing so much of their own lives to serve our country and fight for freedom in Iraq.

My suggestion is that people either make a donation or volunteer for a local charity in honor of our service people. These people are serving our country by fighting abroad. Let those of us who are at home serve our country by making a commitment to helping others here at home.

There are many wonderful opportunities for charity: donations to your local food bank or meals on wheels, volunteer at a local hospital or nursing home, get involved with a literacy group. This is only a handful of ideas. All one has to do is look through the local newspaper. There are many, many opportunities to help others.

Just as our servicemen and women are working to make this world a better place to live in, let’s everyone, regardless of our opinions on the war, commit ourselves to making our country, our state, our towns and our neighborhoods better places to live by giving of ourselves, our lives and our resources.
