Oct. 15 is the projected day of completion.

GREENE – Whether or not a clerk of the works is needed to oversee the fire station construction project was again considered by selectmen Monday night.

The board discussed the issue earlier this year and determined that it was not necessary to spend between $10,000 and $20,000 for a part-time supervisor of the construction project who would be employed by the town to look after the town’s interests. The architect visits the site twice weekly. Several selectmen said they feel that may be sufficient.

Brenda Theriault, a member of the committee charged with making sure the project runs smoothly, told the board that there is concern among committee members that a clerk of the works is needed.

“The feeling was that we’d be cutting off our nose to spite our face if we don’t have someone there to oversee the construction whatever it costs – $10,000, $20,000 – it’s worth it,” Theriault said.

Voters at a special town meeting in July 2002 authorized the town to build a new fire station and to clear the site of the former fire station and the Patton School before March 10. Both the old station and the former school were torn down in March. The town’s contract with Glen Builders of North Conway, N.H., calls for the project to be completed by Oct. 15.

Construction began in late March. So far footers have been poured and walls are due to be erected. Eldridge said the project is ahead of schedule.

The board asked for input from the architect. No action was taken.

In other business, Eldridge told the board that he believes the town will meet its financial commitments this month.

In March, he said there was a possibility that the town might need a short-term loan to meet expenses due to a high number of unpaid taxes in 2002. Selectmen wanted to hold the line on spending.

The town is obligated to make a monthly payment of $217,000 to SAD 52 to fund the education of Greene’s children.

“We’ve been evaluating the balance very carefully. I still feel we’ll meet our needs by the end of the month,” Eldridge said Monday night.
