Lewiston pitcher Shannon Godin helps squelch the Red Eddies’ offense.

AUBURN — With plummeting temperatures, a blustery wind and occassional rain, it was hard to determine whether it would be a good pitcher’s or a hitter’s day Wednesday.

The Lewiston softball team answered that question decisively.

The Blue Devils pounded out 13 hits and scored 10 runs in a season-opening 10-4 win over Edward Little at Tribou Field.

“Last year, we did pretty good hitting,” said junior outfielder Nicole Caron. “We weren’t too sure this year because we hadn’t done too much hitting. I know for me I was struggling in the beginning. Once we got outside, it all seemed to fall together. We’ve done really good hitting. We’re swinging instead of watching them go by.”

Caron was one of Lewiston’s biggest run producers. She had three hits and three RBI. Katie Morin also had three hits, scored three runs and drove in a run. Ali Coleman had two hits and an RBI.

Edward Little couldn’t muster the same kind of offense. The Red Eddies (1-1) had just four hits. Krista Wotherspoon had two of them, driving in four runs runs.

“I was pleased as punch for the effort that Shannon Godin put in,” said Lewiston coach Fred Royer of his pitcher. “I’m overjoyed for the kid to get that win.”

Godin, making her first varsity start, struck out six.

The Blue Devils jumped out to the early lead with three runs in the first inning. Two came in on an error.

“We’re the type of team that can’t allow ourselves to get down early,” said EL coach Gene Keene. “They shouldn’t have scored in the first inning. We’ll get better. We always do.”

Morin doubled to left off the fielder’s glove, scoring Steph Lagasse for the first run. Godin and Morin came in when a Meagan Marcoux grounder was misplayed.

“Coach told us from day one to start out big in the first inning, get some runs in, swing the bat at everything and take every opportunity we have,” said Caron.

Lewiston made it 5-0 in the third. Coleman doubled in Morin, and Caron followed with a triple. EL, however, got within 5-3 in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded triple by Wotherspoon.

“What I’m really happy about is that we bounced back and made it 5-3,” said Keene. “We put some runners on base and got a big hit. We just needed a couple more big hits. We didn’t get another big hit after Krista’s triple.”

Caron opened the lead again in the seventh with an RBI triple. Kim Bechard drove her in with a double.

“It was kind of a shock,” said Caron. “I’ve never really hit anything big. I just swung and ran. I heard my coach say ‘Come” and I ran as hard as I could. It was a big hit. It brought in another run and insured our win.”

Marcoux added a two-run triple in the seventh. Caron drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. Wotherspoon drove in the final run with a sacrifice in the bottom of the inning. EL stranded five runners in the last five innings.

“It’s been a long three weeks in the gym,” said Royer. “There were signs of them playing well. This is a good start for us.”
