LEEDS – Firefighters from more than a half dozen towns spent hours Monday battling a blaze that burned through several acres of woods along Campbell Road.

Crews on the ground were assisted by Maine Forest Service workers who helped attack the flames by helicopter.

Still, the blaze, first reported at about 3 p.m., was still being fought four hours later. Officials estimated at least six acres had burned.

“This was one big fire,” said Turner fire Chief Steve Fish. “It was going, and going hard. The tree tops were on fire.”

The blaze was battled by firefighters from Leeds, Turner, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Wayne, Greene and Fayette. Crews on the ground struggled over rough landscape around the area where the fire was burning through brush, grass and trees.

“It’s pretty steep terrain out there,” Fish said.

Campbell Road is located off Route 219, roughly a mile and a half from the Leeds-Turner town line.

Fish said firefighters from the Forest Service made “multiple drops” of water from a helicopter as they tried to help subdue the flames on the ground. But by 7 p.m., crews of firefighters were still out at the scene, extinguishing hot spots in the woods.

It was unclear what started the blaze. Leeds fire Chief Glenn Holt was expected to head an investigation into how the fire started. He could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Nobody was hurt battling the woods fire.
