TURNER – Citizens can add their opinions to the new comprehensive plan that will govern town development for the next decade.

A public meeting Thursday night will allow residents to voice their thoughts on the draft plan, which suggests general directions and will serve as a guide for community and town officials as they make decisions about the town’s future.

The proposed new plan builds on the current plan, done in 1991, by taking into consideration changes that have occurred. It also attempts to look 10 years into the future.

The new plan is divided into two sections. The first presents the vision for Turner and updates town goals, policies and strategies for implementation. The second has an updated inventory and information about the characteristics of the town.

The plan includes two overpasses, one at routes 4 and 219 in North Turner and one at routes 4 and 117 in Turner Village. The plan will also address the renovation or relocation of the town office, commercial development along Route 4, the continuation of farming activities throughout the community, a new post office and a new library.

The plan also states there will be no large retail “big box stores,” there will be restrictions on used car dealerships and there will be no junkyards.

The proposed plan also addresses recreational upgrades, more open access to the rivers and ponds, combining state, local and private funding to retain open space and the expansion of agricultural tourism.

Copies of the draft plan are available at the town office. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Turner Town Office.
